Hispanic growth booms in state

S.C. population spurt highest in the nation

Members of the Hispanic community arrive at Holy Spirit Catholic Church on Johns Island on Thursday for a special Spanish-language Mass that included special prayers for immigration reform, said organizer Diana Salazar.

Census Population Estimates

The Hispanic population grew faster in South Carolina than anywhere else in the nation last year, according to U.S. Census Bureau data released Thursday.

South Carolina's Hispanic population grew 8.7 percent during the year that ended July 1, 2007, according to an analysis of the Census data for The Associated Press by William Frey, a demographer at the Brookings Institution. That was faster than any other state and well ahead of the national average of 3.3 percent, he said.

The news of the growth didn't do much to encourage a local Hispanic activist on her way to church to pray for changes in the nation's immigration laws.

"I don't believe it," said Diana Salazar, president of the Latino Association of Charleston.

The figures were released on the same day thousands of immigrants and activists gathered in cities across the country to demand comprehensive immigration reform, including citizenship opportunitiesfor the estimated 12 million illegal immigrants in the United States, the AP reported. Outdoor rallies drew thousands in cities such as Los Angeles, Chicago and Washington.

Meanwhile in South Carolina, state lawmakers continued to hammer out a bill that would crack down on employers who hire undocumented workers. In that climate, local Hispanics are afraid to demonstrate publicly, Salazar said.

"We figured immigration officials wouldn't come inside a church," said Salazar, a legal citizen of Mexican descent. "It's just sad. I think it's a shame."

She was urging Hispanics to attend a special evening Mass at Holy Spirit Catholic Church on Johns Island. The Spanish-language service celebrated the Virgin Mary but included prayers just for immigration reform, Msgr. Charles Hutson Rowland said.

South Carolina gained 13,569 Hispanics last year, swelling the documented Hispanic population to 168,920, according to the Census Bureau. That's 3.8 percent of the state's population. The state's Hispanic population increased 76 percent since July 2000, according to the Census Bureau.

The actual Hispanic population is probably three times the official estimate, according to the Consortium for Latino Immigration Studies at the University of South Carolina, which estimates it at closer to half a million.

Nine of the top 10 states with the highest Hispanic growth rates last year were in the South, according to Frey's analysis. Tennessee's Hispanic population grew 8.1 percent; North Carolina's 7.8 percent; Georgia's 7.1 percent; Alabama, Mississippi and Kentucky 7 percent; Arkansas 6.8 percent; and Louisiana 6.5 percent.

The nation's Hispanic population reached 45.5 million last July, or 15.1 percent of the estimated total U.S. population of 301.6 million, according to the Census Bureau's report.

The report also said California had the largest Hispanic population of any state (13.2 million), followed by Texas (8.6 million) and Florida (3.8 million). Texas had the largest numerical increase (308,000), followed by California (268,000) and Florida (131,000). In New Mexico, Hispanics made up the highest proportion of the total population (44 percent), with California and Texas (36 percent each) next in line.

Our elected leaders in Columbia are a pathetic joke. People who employ these illegals need to be dealt with in a severe and harsh way. Yet our representative side with the lobbyist who want these criminals who trespass and break our laws.

I think an example needs to be made out of a few of these landscape companies that are using illegals. A few lawsuits should put them out of business and strip the owners of every penny they have, eh?

Voters need to snap out of the delusion and understand that be real Americans have been spit in the face by these tyrants that don't even uphold the Constitution and Laws of South Carolin nor the Constitution and Laws of the United States. Every last one of them are crooked as crooked can be. They are a threat to everyone of us.

thats great... that means the S.C will probably have a hispanic population of around a million in a year or two. Also, Mrs. Salazar - that is very slick thinking, when you say that you hold your meetings in the church because immigration officials won't come inside. I think you may be right, but it sure is a sad fact.

P.S. Good luck to all of you out there who get into an automobile accident with an illegal. They tend to forget english very quickly. And anyone out there with pets (i.e. Ducks/Birds) watch out because they might be an illegals diner if you aren't careful.

Illegal immigration, This is the federal governments attempt to assimulate them into our country to form the perfect North American union. Pretty soon the dollar will be so devalued that the new currency will be unvailed. Gas prices will drop over night and China will go broke.

we need to pressure our corrupt politicians to enforce the laws on the books and send every blessed one of these illegals back to where they came from. They are destroying our culture. Just look at all the billboards and businesses that have signs in Spanish only. There is even a car lot on College Park that is flying the Mexican flag!!! That is offensive and outrageous!!! Send these traitorous criminals back to where they came from!!! If their culture wasn't morally bankrupt and offensive they wouldn't be here in the first place.

This is disgusting and disgraceful. Our elected teaders in SC are a sad group of losers. This is going to cost us the taxpayers plenty.

These people that are here ILLEGALY need to be sent home, denied medical service, denied access to any means of transportation.

Those that employ them are self centered money hungry crooks themselves.

This just burns me up.

Posted by singleroni on May 2, 2008 at 7:44 a.m. (Suggest removal)

why do we celebrate cinco de mayo day. isn't this supporting the illegals and sending a message of welcome!!!!!!!

Posted by theronce on May 2, 2008 at 7:46 a.m. (Suggest removal)

It appears that the Catholic Church is a facilitator to the illegal immigrant agenda. I also suspect that any legislator who hinders effective and tough laws to eliminate the illegals within our borders probably has a personal monitary investmet needing to keep them here.

Posted by mcdian on May 2, 2008 at 7:54 a.m. (Suggest removal)

That is why we target the employers. I hope you all are posting complaints at every government website that show preference to spanish. Also we must write our legislators state and federal on a regular basis. If the letters/emails they get surpass the amount they get from the lobbyests things will start to change. Also vote out Lindsey Grahm. He is for amnisty.

It is not safe for any american to work at a company that hires illegals. If they are taking shortcuts in hiring they are taking shortcuts in other areas also and should be out of buisiness.

The CDC has reported many outbreaks of deseases that were previosly eradicated. Measles, TB, Polio, Melaria. It is more fatal here because american doctors arn't trained to look for them as much.

You forget that most illegals think that they have a right to a job. No one has a right to a job or shelter.

Posted by Hey_U_Guys on May 2, 2008 at 7:55 a.m. (Suggest removal)

They just keep coming and coming, multiplying and multiplying. They're like rabbits. Well, kinda like rabbits. Rabbits are cute and cuddly and you don't really mind taking care of them.

What kills me is that these people are never grateful for what we do for them. We supply EVERYTHING for these people. Jobs, WIC, healthcare, etc... They just take it and run. How many legal American citizens get denied Medicaid a year? (I'll have to look for that stat later.) Yet, the illegal immigrants that come over with all 15 of their family members qualify. It's because they can't supply documentation that they have a job, because they ALL work under the table. I'm sorry but I am f-ing sick and tired of my hard earned money being taken from me and applied towards people that, in my opinion, don't deserve it. Let's take care of our own. Or is that a foreign concept these days?

We need some folks like this guy;

"I'm not going to use taxpayer dollars to file lawsuits for illegal aliens," said Bruning after learning the couple was in the U.S. illegally. "You're not going to get a free lawyer" from his office, he said, "if you're not a citizen of this country."

If ms Salazar wanted to help the Hispanic community she would be against illegal immigration also. Why does she support the continued abuse of her people, by drug runners and people being crammed in vehicles, having to pay criminals outrageous amounts of money for them to smuggle them here. The rapes against the women coming across is astrinomical. Why Ms Salazar do you support this?

People are going to have to agree not to use any company that hires illegals.
Don't use landscapers, roofers, or any business that can't show authenic documentation for their workers.
Boycott all of these businesses, and when they see their profits plummet, then they will be forced to stop hiring illegals.
It won't work unless everyone participates.
A very good point brought up about diseases cropping up that we thought were a thing of the past.
This is becoming a frightening situation, folks, and the citizens have got to demand that something be done.
People think that auto insurance rates are high now?
Just watch them skyrocket as more and more money has to be paid out because of accidents involving illegals.
At the rate things are going, our own disabled and elderly citizens will suffer, as there will be no money left to care for them.
It has got to stop....now!

Next time you're in Lowe's or Home Depot, observe all the isle signs and item descriptions that are written in Spanish. Then when you go to the check out, ask the clerk, "Can I pay for this in pesos?" These places don't care if you can't read or write the English language....all they want is that green American money. If the illegal's path was made an uneasy one, they would go to some place where life was easier. These 2 places cater to the illegals! Illegals assemble in SC because they know they're not going to get convicted here in this state. This is truley sad and outragous!

There is no respect for people, who wants all the money in the world and wishes worst to the illegals! Good morning all:
There are some wonderful comments in this section today as many of hearts are saddened at this weeks spectacle in Columbia of our lawmakers mass sellout of the people of our great state. AND IT'S WE THE PEOPLE THAT MUST RISE UP TO TAKE BACK THE SC GENERAL ASSEMBLY from this body that has chosen to represent the "shameber of commerce" rather than the overwhelming "silent majority" of hard working citizens of South Carolina. I agree with the suggestion above is that we start on June10th by ousting Lindsey Graham due to his support for amnesty. This would send a strong message to the Columbia lawmakers who've sold us out. Also if there's anyone living in Glen McConnell's district that will file as a petition candidate (independent), they have until July to file and should contact the Charleston County election commission. FELLOW PATRIOTS, WE MUST RISE UP NOW!

There have to be immigration laws, and the culture (ie speaking the language) needs to be protected, but these people are little differ from our forefathers. The only difference is it is now harder to LEGALLY immigrant to this country than it was in the last century.

Dear President Bush:

I'm about to plan a little trip with my family and extended family, and I would like to ask you to assist me. I'm going to walk across the border from the U.S. into Mexico, and I need to make a few arrangements. I know you can help with this.

I plan to skip all the legal stuff like visas, passports, immigration quotas and laws. I'm sure they handle those things the same way you do here.

So, would you mind telling your buddy, President Vicente Fox, that I'm on my way over? Please let him know that I will be expecting the following:

1. Free medical care for my entire family.
2. English-speaking government bureaucrats for all services I might need, whether I use them or not.
3. All government forms need to be printed in English.
4. I want my kids to be taught by English-speaking teachers.
5. Schools need to include classes on American culture and history.
6. I want my kids to see the American flag flying on the top of the flag pole at their school with the Mexican flag flying lower down.
7. Please plan to feed my kids at school for both breakfast and lunch.
8. I will need a local Mexican driver's license so I can get easy access to government services.
9. I do not plan to have any car insurance, and I won't make any effort to learn local traffic laws.
10. In case one of the Mexican police officers does not get the memo from Pres. Fox to leave me alone, please be sure that all police officers speak English.
11. I plan to fly the U.S. flag from my house top, put flag decals on my car, and have a gigantic celebration on July 4th. I do not want any complaints or negative comments from the locals.
12. I would also like to have a nice job without paying any taxes, and don't enforce any labor laws or tax laws.
13. Please tell all the people in the country to be extremely nice and never say a critical word about me, or about the strain I might place on the economy.

I know this is an easy request because you already do all these things for all the people who come to the U.S. from Mexico. I am sure that Pres. Fox won't mind returning the favor if you ask him nicely.
However, if he gives you any trouble, just invite him to go quail hunting with your V.P.

carolinadude,

There are 100s of thousand of South Carolinians who agree with you. We must rise up and remove these tyrants and take back our government. Even if we have to put them in prison.

The time is now. They've had their changes. But we all see they are in the pockets of big business.

Never make the voters angry. And they have done that. Nobody has any trust at all for this pack of liars and con artist in Columbia. Then there is a gay looking Senator Graham who called every voter in SC a bigot for no being PRO-ILLEGAL like he is. He said he didn't care if he got voted back for another term or not. His career is over with. He will go down in flames like the hillbilly hick should.

Just wait. Due to our governments corruption and catering to illegal invaders over U.S. citizens you will soon be the one to "come home and see your children look at you with hungry eyes!"

In Parkland Memorial Hospital Dallas, the second busiest maternity ward in the United States, 70% of the women giving birth were illegal aliens. That added up to 11,200 babies for which Medicaid kicked in 34.5 million dollars to deliver these babies, the feds another 9.5 million and Dallas taxpayers tossed in 31.3 million. The average illegal patient is 25 years and giving birth to her second anchor baby.

....Ron Paul 2008 Presidential Campaign
http://www.ronpaul2008.com/

"We have security issues at home and our resources are running thin. Our education system is stretched, and immigration accounts for virtually all the national increase in public school enrollment in the last 2 decades. There is a worker present in 78% of immigrant households using at least one major welfare program... It’s no surprise then that often times these immigrants can afford to work for lower wages. They are subsidized by our government to do so." - Ron Paul

"The anchor baby phenomenon has also been very problematic. Simply being born on US soil to illegal immigrant parents should not trigger automatic citizenship. This encourages many dangerous behaviors and there are many unintended consequences as a result of this blanket policy. I am against amnesty and I have introduced an amendment to the Constitution (H.J. Res 46) which will end this form of amnesty." - Ron Paul

"Right now we are subsidizing a lot of illegal immigration with our robust social programs and it is an outrage that instead of coming to the United States as a land of opportunity, many come for the security guaranteed by government forced transfer payments through our welfare system. I have opposed giving federal assistance to illegal immigrants and have introduced legislation that ends this practice. In the last major House-passed immigration bill I attempted to introduce an amendment that would make illegal immigrants ineligible for any federal assistance." - Ron Paul

"I have also supported the strengthening our border and increasing the number of border patrol agents. It is an outrage that our best trained border guards are sent to Iraq instead of guarding our borders. For national security, we need to give more attention to our own border which is being illegally breached every day, and yet the government shirks one of its few constitutionally mandated duties, namely to defend this country. Citizens lose twice with our current insecure border situation – we don’t have the protection we should have, and then taxpayers have to deal with the fallout in the form of overstretched public resources and loss of jobs." - Ron Paul

"Rather than securing our borders, we seem to be providing more pores for illegal aliens, drug dealers, and terrorists to permeate. ... Not only that, but the anti-competitive and burdensome yoke of over-regulation of our industry at home is about to send a lot more Americans to the unemployment lines." - Ron Paul

RON PAUL IN '08!
*Physically secure our borders and coastlines.
*Track visa holders and deport anyone who overstays.
*End birthright citizenship.
*No Amnesty.
*End "Catch & Release"
*No welfare for illegal aliens.

It's not racist to expect people to follow immigration law, learn English and abandon their illicit and criminally minded, morally bankrupt culture when they LEGALLY immigrate here. If I moved to another country, I'd become fluent in their language BEFORE leaving home!!!

Maybe we should revisit 1775 and deal with our despotic, corrupt government like our heroic forefathers did. If these lazy, good for nothing Hispanics did this, they wouldn't have to come here.

Item number 1 on every services contract in America should state that your company will be hired only if you can guarantee no illegal immigrants work for your company. If illegals are found on site then the contract us null and void AND you have to honor your half of the contract. That would slow it down.

What get’s me is we are surrounded by illegals and can’t do a darn thing about it. The INS should offer legal US citizens $100 for every successful deportation.

An American of hispanic heritage who favors letting illegals break the law does so because they are racist.

What is going on down there?? I leave for 14 years and ya'll just let the lowcountry go to heck in a handbasket. A MEXICAN handbasket.

What is with the invasion?? it's either illegal aliens or Ohioans. Won't be long before natives will be a minority population.

Must be tough.....you either have an illegal alien working on the yard next door stealing your dogs for lunch...or Ohioans slowing down traffic so badly you can't get home to protect your dogs from the landscapers/roofers next door.

I really feel for ya.....it's either blinding white light from the pasty white skin of the yankees....or the pervasive smell of frijoles and beans in the air.

hehehehe....you people crack me up.

If you didn't have illegal aliens....who would cut your grass?? prune your azaleas?? powerwash your siding?? Replace your roofs?? Pick your crops?? I really don't see billybob or bubba standing in line for one of those jobs.

The reason I can make fun is....where I moved to...we don't have that problem. furriners disappear....down an empty mine shaft. Ohioans and illegal aliens don't bother us in West by God Virginia....ain't enough work for the illegal aliens and no beaches for the ohioans.

And before you start....I'm a native Mt.Pleasatonian, graduated from Moultrie High School....worked at the shipyard...and was a firefighter for the Town of Mt.Pleasant. I moved in '93 when I saw the handwriting on the wall.....in spanish!

Barbeque and chicken roast? I figured Sen. Graham only took his meat raw, straight from the trouser department.

I've got one for you allwoman. Check out this picture of Lindsey Graham's favorite childhood playground. He would climb up and down that slide until he just couldn't go any more.

Hmmmm...maybe I should get some of that self tanning lotion to darken up my skin, take the Rosetta Stone spanish language course and go to the welfare office, social security, etc. and tell them "no habla ingles". Maybe I could at least get the social security I am now fighting for and which I paid into my whole life and being disabled, which I deserve.

In high school, I took spanish because it was the easiest out of all the languages. Was in the spanish national honor society and all that good stuff. Was fluent back then, but because I lived in an area with very few spanish speaking people, I lost the ability to speak the language. Too bad, because it would have come in mighty handy trying to get the benefits that I deserve. I'm sure that I'd be able to walk into the offices and walk right out with my welfare, medicare/medicaid and my food stamps.

I'm getting more disgusted and furious by the day. I'm actually an american citizen and not an illegal...so I get to sit and fight MY government for the things that they can get with no questions asked!!

I have a solution for your bladder problem. Contact Sen. Graham and inform him that you are a loyal constituent with a temporary tinkle situation. He can then call his buddy Sen. McCain and set you up with a free box of Depends from the stock he keeps on the Straight Talk Express.

No, the driver had his McDonalds uniform still on and he was drinking tequila. You think he has car insurance?

Question: What do bricks and fat, white women have in common?

Answer: If it wasn't for a Mexican, they wouldn't get laid!

Border Patrol lets some illegals go — over and over again

EL PASO, Texas - Josefa Gonzalez Loya has sneaked across the Mexican border at least 128 times in the past eight years. And each time, the Border Patrol has been nice enough to give her a lift home.

*** We have got to get rid of our representatives and replace them with REAL Patriots that stand by the OATH they take to defend YOUR state and YOUR Country!

Maybe if we all drove down Ashely Frustrate where they seem to live around, we might catch a few in the middle of the road trying to cross it? Eh? I do have a sticky gas petal.

How it would work
Friday, May 2, 2008

Although the Governor's Office is arguing that the Senate's plan to penalize employers who hire illegal immigrants is unenforceable, Senate attorneys worked out this scenario:

Under the plan, the state Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulations would audit new records that businesses would be proposed to keep that would verify they checked the legal status of their employees.

In this example, the agency audits a business and finds 10 illegal workers on their payroll. Nine had provided the business with bad documents and one was knowingly hired. The business, in trouble for such actions for the first time, transported the workers to and from a work site.

The business would be fined up to $16,000; between $900 and $9,000 for having bad documents, up to $2,000 for knowingly hiring an illegal immigrant and up $5,000 for transporting the illegal worker. Additionally, the business would be subject to criminal prosecution. Conviction could lead to as much as five years in prison.

*** Create a task force of 50 State cops to go out and round up these employers who hire and use illegal mexicans. They are all sitting ducks and easy targets. They have got to be stopped!!

As a Latino of Cuban background who came to SC from Miami to attend college. Only reason why the so call Hispanic population has risen in the South Carolina because other states are doing the right thing. Cracking down on those who hire ILLEGALS, and those who live behind the shadows. There are Latinos in South Carolina like other states where WE"RE not all illegal. Piss me off to think people always put us in one group as being Latino your illegal. Yes the vast majority of your illegals are of Hispanic background, but that population has nothing over those who wake up everyday and work just like an American does everyday. Half of us don't even worry about the terms Hispanic/Latinos we are just like everyone else. Plenty people only notice one type of Hispanic based on what you have around your area. My family consist of all shades of Latino and mixed with Latino.
