Imagina first femaleto win Carolina Cup

State Report

CAMDEN — Imagina won the Carolina Cup Steeplechase on Saturday, becoming the first female horse to win in the 76-year history of the race.

The 6-year-old mare finished the 10-fence, 2 1/8-mile course in 4:06 to win the first leg of the National Steeplechase Association's Triple Crown Series for novice jumpers.

Red Letter Day finished in second, nine lengths back. Imagina is trained by Sanna Hendriks, who in 1992 became the first female jockey to win the Colonial Cup feature in Camden.

Imagina was ridden by Jody Petty.

Softball

The College of Charleston (19-22, 5-0) swept a SoCon doubleheader at Georgia Southern (20-21, 2-3), winning 3-2 in 10 innings in the first game and 6-3 in the second.

Samantha Kubinski scored the winning run in Game 1 on a wild pitch. Terri Mesko worked 10 innings for the victory. In the second game, the Cougars scored five runs in the first three innings, and Tiffany Harmon homered. Shannon Howard earned the victory.

--Winthrop (21-13, 3-0) got a run on a sacrifice fly for a 5-4, eight-inning victory over Charleston Southern (15-27, 0-3) and a sweep of a three-game Big South series at CSU. Jenn Pardue had two hits, two RBIs and scored twice for the Bucs, who tied at 4 in the seventh inning.

College football

The Gridiron Bash celebration scheduled before South Caro-lina's spring game on April 19 has been postponed. MSL Sports and Entertainment had scheduled similar pep rallies and concerts at several schools across the county, but delayed them all on Saturday. Refunds will be given.

Battery soccer

Duke University jumped to a two-goal lead and held off the Charleston Battery 1-2 in an exhibition match for the USL First Division team at Blackbaud Stadium.

The Battery's Randi Patterson scored just before halftime.

College track

Charleston Southern's Dionne Gibson qualified for the NCAA East Regional meet in the women's 200 meters at the Winthrop Invitational in Rock Hill. Gibson was timed in 23.80 seconds.
