'No violation' of policy in deer shooting

Staff report
Wednesday, March 26, 2008

North Charleston police determined that an officer fired seven shots at a wounded deer alongside Dorchester Road earlier this month and did not violate any departmental policies.

A car hit the deer near Michaux Parkway on the afternoon of March 11. Another motorist who happened upon the scene contacted the newspaper, saying the officer fired at least a dozen times, and never at the animal's head.

Though agreeing the deer had to be put down, the motorist filed a complaint with the police department because she thought the incident was not handled properly.

The department did not concur after reviewing the matter internally.

"(I)t was confirmed that the officer fired seven shots," Public Information Officer Spencer Pryor said Monday in an e-mail. "There was no violation of the department's policy with regards to the incident."

Police did not release the officer's name.

The truth comes out. The original story said that the complainant stated the officer had to reload. An officer's magazine holds more than seven shots, unless they were using a revolver...which I find hard to believe that NCPD would be using one in this day and age.
