USC's Garcia charged
COLUMBIA — South Carolina's mischief-prone quarterback is in trouble with the law for the third time since he arrived on campus a little more than a year ago.
And, this time, coach Steve Spurrier says that redshirt freshman Stephen Garcia's future is beyond his control.
"His fate is out of my hands, we'll put it that way," Spurrier said Monday after the team's spring practice session. "Stephen Garcia's fate is in the hands of the University of South Carolina. He may be out here; he may not be out here. We'll just have to wait and see.
"We've got the president, the athletic director, the dean ... we've got a whole bunch of people over there. If they say he'll be here, he'll be here."
Garcia, 20, and two other Gamecocks, 20-year-old offensive guard Heath Batchelor and 19-year-old walk-on quarterback Zac Brindise, were ticketed early Saturday evening by USC police for underage possession of beer.
The incident occurred about 6:30 p.m. in an on-campus courtyard. An officer noted that the three players, and also Garcia's 25-year-old brother Gary, had beer and coolers between the East and West quads. The elder Garcia was cited for transferring alcohol to minors.
Batchelor explained himself to Spurrier, who said he "pardoned" the sophomore from Alabama. He practiced Monday.
"He told me he wasn't involved," Spurrier said. "He was falsely accused, and I believe him."
Spurrier said Brindise, the younger brother of former Florida quarterback Noah Brindise, will sit out a couple of days.
And then there's Garcia, the long-haired, strong-armed Tampa, Fla., native who's drawn a lot of attention for someone who hasn't yet played a single down.
Garcia, who paid his fine Monday, didn't attend practice Monday. The school said earlier in the day that Garcia would sit out because of missing too many English classes.
Garcia was expected to serve that suspension later during spring drills, Spurrier said Friday.
Pressed Monday night for his feelings about the matter, Spurrier either deferred to USC administrators or shrugged his shoulders.
"What do you want me to say? I was surprised or wasn't surprised?" Spurrier said. "I'll accept whatever they say. He's had a lot of chances here. We'll see what happens."
Entering the spring, Garcia was considered a candidate to take the quarterback job heading into fall camp. Chris Smelley and Tommy Beecher, who both played last year, took all the snaps Monday.
"I'm not worried about it," Spurrier said. "We've got Tommy Beecher and Chris Smelley, and we know they're always going to be here. They do everything we ask. They're wonderful kids. And they can throw the ball, they can play. We'll worry about Stephen if he comes back out here."
Garcia's encounters with USC police didn't end Saturday during the early-evening hours.
At 11:30 p.m., five hours after the underage possession ticket was issued, officers were dispatched to a residence hall at 1400 Blossom Street after a fire alarm was pulled and an extinguisher was removed from the wall.
Once there, the police report says Garcia approached an officer and said he "discharged the extinguisher after noticing sparks coming from his stove."
One fire engine responded to the call. Firemen and housing employees cleaned up debris from the extinguisher, which the report said sustained about $100 worth of damage.
The report said "one student discipline was issued," but a USC official said Monday that there might not be any official charges related to the incident.
Garcia was already on a short, short leash with Spurrier after a couple of arrests shortly after he arrived on campus in January 2007.
He was arrested in February for public drunkenness in the Five Points bar district. A couple of weeks later, he was charged with malicious injury to personal property for keying the car of a professor after they engaged in a dispute about a parking spot near the university library.
After those incidents, which were eventually expunged from Garcia's record, Spurrier suspended Garcia for spring ball. That move led to Garcia taking a redshirt in the fall.
Following the initial ordeal, Spurrier said he was hopeful that Garcia would make "an all-out effort" to get his off-field life in order. He later said that Garcia was down to his "final strike."
Garcia and his coaches had talked in the past month about Garcia's attempt to mature. The birth of his first child, Garcia said, factored greatly into that.
"Everything that happened to him was the first two weeks of when he got here," quarterbacks coach David Reaves said in February. "Ever since then, he's been a model student, a model athlete, and he's done a good job for us."
Extra points: Senior corner Carlos Thomas and walk-on safety Mike Newton returned Monday to practice after serving suspension for off-field problems. ... As expected, redshirt freshman Mark Barnes moved from receiver to safety. Chris Culliver had done the same Saturday. ... Center Garrett Anderson sat out practice with a back injury.

This is the last, last, last ,last, last, last chance. This is the 6th strike! Steve Spurrier now is a big of a joke as sc is!! LOL. Parents pay attention. Dont let your kid become part of this out of control, joke of a football program. 17-24 sc record against DUKE in FOOTBALL!! The old man has done nothing while at sc but lose and recruit thugs! LOL. What is really funny, these thugs and convicts cant even win!! LOL.

If you're going to have a team of thugs and morons, at least WIN some games.
You USC people should be really proud of your boys up there.

"Those who ignore history are condemned ............to recruit the same type folks and continually see their names on police blotters."
and please, the first gamecock respondent decrying youth and naivete (they all get the exact same set of rules---apparently a large number of gamecock football players simply choose to ignore them) needs to look at the 13 page sheet of criminal acts, suspensions and dismissals of usc "student"-athletes in the last 7 or 8 years. Thats right---13 printed pages!!!
The only person profitting from gamecock athletics right now is Neil Lourie---lawyer of choice for the usc athletic dept.

Bigriver, you obviously have an agenda against the Gamecocks. You say all Spurrier has done since he arrived is lose...let's not forget his wins against Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, and Clemson. Oh, and he also beat Houston in a bowl game. Granted, you could come back with a long list of losses Spurrier has had at USC, but to even talk about their record against Duke - I can't even remember the last time we played Duke in football.
With that said, aside from your personal agenda against the Gamecocks, I do agree with you that Spurrier's program is getting out of control. Garcia should have been gone after his second offense. I am a big Gamecock fan and was looking forward to seeing the guy play, but now I have no desire to ever see this alcoholic "rebel" take a snap. He needs to go back to Florida with his illegitamte child, his "contributing to the delinquency of minors" big brother, and never come back to our state.

You will have to excuse big river he is still crying from Clemson's basketball collapse the other night. The only thing this guy does is spew hatred for Spurrier and the Gamecocks. Plus he is on this whole Duke kick. But he never acknowledges the fact that his beloved Tigers were the last team to lose to Duke, twice I think. I just hope big river finds a job one day so he can quit making dumb, uneducated posts. I am sure all of Clemson nation loves having him in their fold.
Now on to Garcia. I know it may be a shock to most people but a majority of high school kids drink alcohol before turning 21. But this kid has already had to many chances at Carolina. Maybe they should kick him out of school and let him go somewhere else.
And at least the Carolina players face some discipline. At Clemson players get a DUI and still can play in the bowl game. Notice bigriver does not comment on that one.

cranky----Skip Wise? I fail to comprehend the connection between the ongoing parade of miscreants at usc who've committed crimes while enrolled or have been suspended and dismissed for various other shortcomings as "student-athletes".
Wise----although an unbelievable talent----was a very tragic story AFTER he left Clemson (he was there only one year and never got into trouble while a student) and squandered his God-given talent on drugs. (For those too young to remember---Wise was a point guard for Clemson for the 72-73 season, scored 33 points in his first game against the #11 team in the country and was ACC Freshman of the Year---the runnerup was Phil Ford. He left after one year and after taking some extremely bad advice and a promise of money most of which he never received to join the newly formed ABA. Born and raised in the poorest areas of Baltimore and DC, he fell into a life of heroin addiction, arrests and imprisonment soon after the dissolution of most of the ABA)
So whats the mention of Wise all about???

Clemson had a athlete that got into actual trouble with the law. This has to come as a shock to the CLemson faithful. Clemson is one of the cleanest programs in the country. They have never been put on probation by the NCAA for anything... Wait a minute....
Cranky yankee- please do us all a favor and move back to Ohio. Your kind have ruined our town.

notafan----unfortunately, sarcastic remarks about ANY OTHER SCHOOL'S student-athletes run-ins with the law---whether as a student or not----in no way detracts from constant line of usc athletes through the Richland Co. legal system.......and for someone to blindly ignore the problem or dismiss it as symptomatic of society is not addressing the problem nor trying to resolve it....it would be so nice to see or hear a gamecock fan frustratingly demand some changes and accountability at usc.
You may expect more negative remarks from everyone as the "Parade of Miscreants" continues at usc....and while you may not appreciate bigriver's comments---I, too, am curious as to just how many strikes Mr. Garcia gets before authority admits his presence on campus is not working out for either party.

hey ashleyriver did you even read my post?? I said the guy had to go. I guess you overlooked that part. Once again Clemson fans throwing stones but can't acknowledge that every college program has thugs. Clemson included. You see Clemson fans have a short attention span and need to have someone remind them that their program is not all that clean.
At least Garcia was punished for his prior runins with the law. The same cannot be said for Clemson's Vincnent. He got DUI and it was all but overlooked. He had to play in the bowl game given the academic issues of the other players.
Should we also appreciate bigrivers comments about Duke as well? At what point are his comments just ignorant? Please advise.
And yeayea Reid lasted two weeks at Carolina his first time there. What makes you think things will change? He is not that good and will never see the playing field in Columbia. Carolina gave him a free ride in the hopes of swaying AJ Green to commit to the Cocks. How many of Reid's games have you been to? I have watched him over the past two seasons and there is something wrong when a QB has two 6'4" receivers and can't hit them in stride on a regular basis.

LOL notafan---My attention span is considerably longer than the average gamecock fan's memory of the insanely long list of criminal activities, suspensions and dismissals by the "student-athletes" at usc. Seriously, pull it up---its 13 printed pages long just from the last 7 or 8 seasons---much of which has been spent on NCAA probation.. If indeed you are outraged, then send Hyman and your president a letter or email expressing your opinion!
And please, gamecock fans have done NOTHING but continue to point at ONE---thats right, ONE---instance in which you think the Clemson coaching staff has "coddled" an athlete who's been charged--BUT NOT CONVICTED---of driving under the influence. C.Vincent said he was innocent, according to the ticket had passed all the field sobriety tests and had co-operated with the officer, and the coaching staff stated then that he had convinced them of his innocence. Do not be amazed or surprised if/when C.Vincent is convicted he is immediately dismissed from the team....I'm sorry you're jealous that, in addition to beating usc in football about 80% of the time lately, Clemson runs a relatively clean program and graduates a large percentage of the players.
As you stated, every school participating in big time athletics has problems, but its not just one incident at usc is it?...........well, I guess it is about one incident per week. And I'll be happy to provide that list of arrests, suspensions and dismissals if any gamecock fan or curious onlooker would like to see it.
Naturally, when you're in a conference with the most NCAA probations in NCAA history, the criminality and misbehavior of athletes is just the price of doing business.

while not excusing vincent at all, he has not been found guilty of anything yet and that is the reason he played in the bowl game. if he had been found guilty then i would imagine that bowden would have benched him for his poor decision. garcia has not been found guilty THIS TIME but this is his 3rd run in with the law so it is easy fodder for clemson fans to get on usc fans about. this guy is a virus and needs to be sent packing. it would be nice to see carolina fans admit there is a discipline and behavior issue there RIGHT NOW. that CANNOT be said for clemson as we are not WEEK IN AND WEEK OUT hearing about our football player's run in with the law. if this situation were ONGOING at clemson, i would be up in arms about it and not trying to deflect any negative light on carolina. focus on your problems at home before trying to point out others faults, however mundane they may be. i do not condone clemson fans coming on here and bashing carolina right off the bat and wish tiger fans wouldn't do so but that is out of my control. however, i do feel compelled to post when someone brings up vincent's dui situation as i want the truth of the situation known.

spTiger---you're indeed correct. There was a period of time (25/30 years or so ago)when Clemson did deservedly earn a rogue reputation of misbehavior by players when Tiger fans were duly embarrassed---and gamecock fans were the FIRST to point a finger. But Clemson's administration took strong measures not only to enforce discipline, but to demand academic compliance (Vickery Hall is the model to the nation).
Now, we're all seeing how gamecock fans react when the shoe is on the other foot---and it largely has been one of denial and feeble attempts to portray similar problems at other universities as simply a societal matter. I have no doubt that the financial faithful of the gamecock club (or the state taxpayers)at some point will eventually hire an AD or President with a "no tolerance" approach to all this as well.
I will say the columnists at the P&C have been curiously non-judgemental about most of this abject behavior by usc student-athletes as it has continued from Holtz to Spurrier.

Thanks for the totally unsubstantiated accusations there, Nonsense. And for the uninitiated, a large segment of gamecock fans feel their athletes are being unfairly targeted (and constantly arrested) by the police while Clemson has conspired with University, Local, County and State law enforcement to ensure Clemson athletes---who, according to these completely unbiased usc fans-----are doing the same or worse than all the felons and miscreants who inhabit the usc athletic dept.
Besides being completely stupid and untrue, your baseless accusations are a slap in the face of dedicated law enforcement officials in this state who put their lives on the line for public safety each and every day.
And Nonsense, since Clemson regularly and randomly enforces drug testing of ALL athletes.....NO!. I don't believe you when you state there are "many, many potheads playing sports at Clemson", nor does any other rational resident of SC. Like everyone else, I'm skeptical enough to believe that it undoubtedly occurs, just not at the levels you want us to blindly believe ---and, naturally, with no facts to back up your attestment.
And I read this AM in the Greenville News, that good ol' Steve Spurrier has now cowardly distanced himself from the latest Garcia incident (even though the Old Ball Coach told the press Garcia was out of chances) and told media that Garcia's fate rests with the president, the athletic director and a dean. You may all check this out at www.greenvilleonline.com if there are any doubters.

anyone can use this topic to post random bashings of USC or Clemson, but bottom line this story is about S. Garcia.
He has been nothing but trouble since arriving at Carolina, and has been given numerous chances to redeem himself, and yet he continues to laugh at and disrespect the faculty, students, and fans of the University of South Carolina. I would be ashamed to have this guy leading my team. He just had a kid and obviously has shown little signs of maturity, and the previous slaps on the wrist have obviously done no good.

Can you honestly say it doesn't go on? My sons have first hand knowledge that it goes on and underage drinking is rampant also. Quite frankly, the only thing that Garcia is currently guilty of (actually innocent until proven guilty) is underage drinking - which I don't think is a felony in this state. You people who are condemning the USC athletes for underage drinking are a bunch of hypocrites if you say you never took a drink under the age of 21. Give me a break and stop jumping on the negativity bandwagon here - it goes on everywhere and just because Clemson is back in the sticks and nobody sees does not mean it doesn't go on because it DOES. And Clemson's administration will sit back and watch until the NCAA comes in - because they have done it before. At least USC has never had three years of probation where they weren't allowed post season play or television - like after Clemson's bogus national championship fluke. And Greenville's newpaper is in bed with the Clemson folk - like I don't believe everything I read in the P&C - I wouldn't believe 90 per cent of what is in the Greenville rag. And just because you do not believe it, doesn't mean it is not true. My accusations are NOT baseless. Random testing? Believe that? Then I have a bridge I'd like to sell you.

Well based on the picture, it looks like Garcia's infatuation with Brad Pitt is not over yet. For those who wonder what the hell I'm talking about, Garcia said he grew his hair long after watching the movie "Troy" which featured Brad Pitt as a long-haired Achilles.

Nonsense, get over it. I'm sure Clemson kids drink underage. Athletes and the student body do it all over the country. This is a kid who has been given chance after chance. He knows he's under the spotlight and he made another bad decision. If this were it, then I would agree with you, but the list goes back years to USC players stealing from the athletic program! You can assume whatever you want about Clemson, the fact is that USC football players have been in the paper for years, and as a USC fan, you should be embarrassed and angry about it by now. Your answer is to say that you're sure it happens at Clemson. This kind of effort to excuse things is why this crap continues in college athletics. If a kid at Clemson gets in trouble, I'll be mad about it and hope he gets what he deserves.
Yes, Clemson was on probation. The school fired Danny Ford, has a new President, a new academic center, and has set a great example for how things should be done. It's not perfect, but guys are graduating and staying out of trouble for the most part.
The fluke national championship? You mean the one where they went undefeated and beat Nebraska in the Orange Bowl? When they beat Walker and UGA? The very tough UNC team? There was no argument that year about who had earned the national championship.
Posted by ashleyriver on March 25, 2008 at 2:47 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Again, Nonsense---you provide no factual basis for your accusations---because there is none.........and now its not only law enforcement who's conspired with Clemson to keep athletes misbehavior out of the news, The Greenville News is now "in-bed" with the top-ranked Public University in South Carolina!...Just remarkable!!!.....you can certainly file an "FOI" and get all the drug testing compliance information (done, by the way, under NCAA guidelines---as is usc's) and see for yourself. Indeed, every so often you'll see that an athlete or two has tested positively.....but it doesn't happen very often. (and this is all reported to the media as well--you can probably check archives in any of the states newspapers)
And also again, the outrage of citizens across the state is not about Garcia getting a ticket for underage drinking nor for discharging the fire extinguisher (and thank goodness another, serious incident didn't occur in which a real fire started),...this about a consistent pattern of behavior (criminal and otherwise) by Garcia and a bunch of other athletes at usc over a long period of time as well as your coach not doing what he said.
Just in case you weren't aware, usc has been on NCAA probation JUST AS MANY TIMES as Clemson and its usc who is currently on probation---although I think they're due to come off in the not too distant future---you can certainly check all this out at NCAA.org......and there was nothing bogus about Clemson's National Championship in football---they defeated every team they played including the number1 team. Also by the way, the 1982 NCAA probation given Clemson was only for 2 seasons and the NCAA no longer includes "no post season play" as part of any probation---otherwise 2/3 of the SEC would miss bowl games on a regular basis.
Stop blindly making up stuff, stop all these false accusations and get what few facts you use straight.
