No action taken on water legislation

Thursday, March 20, 2008

COLUMBIA— No vote was taken Wednesday on a proposed state water plan, a law that would determine how much of a stream can be taken by industries and how much must be left for the public.

The Senate Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee heard three hours of testimony from state resource agencies and industry representatives, then carried over the bill until a March 26 meeting.

The law would require large surface water users like manufacturing plants and farms to get state permits that limit their withdrawals.

The fight concerns minimum stream flow, the least amount that must be left in a stream as water is drawn down for industrial use.

The bill would regulate future commercial development along rivers. It was the third time the committee heard the bill, as members face pressure from business and conservation interests.
