People poured out of the Palmetto Pub and Brew House into the parking lot at 1:50 a.m. Wednesday. North Charleston police officers investigating a hit and run nearby heard angry voices in the crowd.

Shots were fired, and two people were wounded, a police report said.

Patrons began running and driving away from the bar on Ashley Phosphate Road as another eight shots were fired, police said.

The officers took cover and shouted for those still in the lot to get down as even more shots were fired, police said. Then, quiet.

Police swept the area and found Jerome Dennis Richardson shot multiple times, lying in the parking lot of an office complex across West Spartan Drive, said Spencer Pryor, North Charleston police public information officer.

Officers removed his shirt and applied dressings and pressure to the wounds in his chest, back and left arm, a police report said.

Shell casings were found in the parking lot nearby, Pryor said.

Richardson was taken to Medical University Hospital, where he was in critical condition, Pryor said.

DeMario Johnson, who also was shot at the pub, was treated for a gunshot wound to his upper left arm at Summerville Medical Center, Pryor said. He is in stable condition, said Julie Plummer, Trident Health System director of public relations.

The shootings remain under investigation, police said. Anyone with information should call North Charleston police at 554-5700 or Crime Stoppers at 554-1111.

I wonder if the hit and run that was nearby was a cop chasing another runner? lol

He had to get this started before 2 am. Afterwards, there might not have been enough people left to scatter appropriatly to get enough excitement going. And besides, it doesn't matter if there are 2 or 200 people left, nobody is going to turn this person in.

Don't know this place. What kind of crowd is it? Do they brew their own beer? If so, do they have a good Pilsener?

LowcountryMoose - These criminals are almost always denied the legal right to own firearms under the myriad of existing gun laws. They don't care about laws though. That's why the law-abiding among us, those that care about laws, NEED to be armed.

Let's see. A couple of bad guys had guns. America has practically disarmed the good guys. The cops cannot be everywhere at once. Maybe we need one more law to require concealed carry for all of the law abiding citizens.

Moose - If you think the primary difference between Iraq and the US is the prevalence of weapons...well then you've proved you are clueless. Weapons are tools used by men, it's what is in their heart that matters, not their hands.

Walking around SC, there are armed people (licensed concealed carry permit holders) around you all the time? Are you scared? You needn't be.

How about I take you to some areas of Jakarta Indonesia. Those guys walking down the street behind you, coming close and close, have no guns, but plenty of knives and other weapons. Are you scared? You should be.

the sad thing is, people are shooting each other over petty problems. what ever happened to a good old fashion fist fight? using a gun is the cowards way to fighting.

So how's that bar closing at 2AM ordinance working out for you North Chuck? Maybe more police presence is the answer, not another law for them to enforce.
