INDIAN WELLS, Calif. — Andy Roddick lost his temper — and his third-round match in the Pacific Life Open.

Roddick broke at least two rackets, hit a ball out of the crowded stadium and threw several small temper tantrums Sunday in a 6-4, 6-4 loss to Tommy Haas.

The loss, only Roddick's third of the year in 18 matches, marked his earliest exit from the ATP Tour event and followed tournament titles at San Jose and Dubai and a quarterfinal effort at Memphis.

Auto racing

McLaren's Lewis Hamilton won the Australian Formula One Grand Prix after an accident-filled season-opening race in Melbourne.

Hamilton, who was No. 2 in last year's drivers championship, started from pole position and avoided the carnage behind him for his fifth victory in 18 GP starts.

The 23-year-old British driver led from pole position and finished 5.4 seconds ahead of BMW Sauber's Nick Heidfeld in second place. Williams' Nico Rosberg was third.

Horse racing

Liberty Bull, the morning favorite at 3-1, powered ahead down the stretch to win the $600,000 WinStar Derby by two lengths at Sunland Park in New Mexico.

Liberty Bull, trained by Thomas Amoss at Oaklawn Park, showed his power when he dashed past Bob Baffert-trained Screen to Screen, which finished second, and show horse Ablaze With Spirit.

The WinStar, still trying to become a graded race to enhance its reputation on the road to the Kentucky Derby, is the world's richest ungraded stakes race.
