R Pub is a West Ashley favorite

Like the Back 9 Pub, also located along Ashley River Road, R Pub is the quintessential West Ashley neighborhood bar.

On the night of my visit, my friend and a graduate of Middleton High School, chatted it up with bartender Miranda Westervelt, a fellow Middleton alumni, and the overall community feel of R Pub was pretty self-evident.

But more importantly, as my friend noted (and was the primary reason for our visit), R Pub has the coldest beer in town. He wasn't kidding. I examined a Miller Lite myself and if it were any colder it would have been frozen.

Besides cold beer and a neighborhood feel, R Pub also features two pool tables, approximately 20 TVs (including one big screen TV), Golden Tee and Silverstrike video games and darts with automated scoring.

There's also a nice comfy couch situated nicely by the big screen television for patrons looking for something a little more comfortable than a bar stool.

Westervelt, an R Pub bartender for nine years, made sure to tell me about the bar's unique promotion: free pizza night.

Yes, on Sunday nights, R Pub customers can enjoy free Papa John's pizza (R Pub is located in the same strip mall as Papa John's and Senor Tequila).

One need not be a West Ashley native to have a good time at R Pub, but the community feel is no doubt part of the bar's charm.

And the name "R Pub" couldn't be more perfect, as the bar continues to serve well the portion of Charleston west of the Ashley River, that most of its customers call home.
