DB Jeffery weighing options
South Carolina is on the board with its first 2009 football commitment in ATH Chris Payne (5-11, 191) of Columbia High. He committed to USC last week, a little more than two weeks after reversing a commitment to Clemson.
One half of the Capitals' highly touted duo has joined USC. Will Payne's close friend, DB Damario Jeffery (6-3, 211), be influenced by Payne's decision?
"I can't say nothing for him if that's where he wants to go," Jeffery said. "If I go to another school, it will be in the SEC and I will be playing against him. I want to play against the best every week, and that's the SEC."
Jeffery also was briefly committed to Clemson but has dropped the Tigers down his list. "Clemson has recruited a couple of safeties and going there would be a waste of my time," he said. "USC is at the top of my list but I haven't visited any other SEC schools." That was to change over the weekend as he was slated to be at Alabama. Jeffery recently was offered by Tennessee. He also has offers from North Carolina, Virginia Tech, Oklahoma, Auburn and Michigan State, and Georgia has invited him for a junior day March 22.
In other recruiting news:
Dorman OL Brandon Thomas (6-4, 280) landed offers from USC and Clemson last week. "He wanted both of them to offer," said Dorman coach Dave Gutshall. "He was awfully happy that they offered. I asked him if he had his mind made up and he told me no." He also has offers from UNC and Maryland.
Southern Cal verbally offered WR Alshon Jeffery (6-3, 217) of Calhoun County last week and invited him for a visit and a camp in June. He was scheduled to visit Alabama on Saturday for a junior day. He also has offers from USC, Kentucky, UNC and Tennessee for football. Kentucky and Tennessee have offered for basketball. Clemson, Georgia and Notre Dame also are interested.
Calhoun County ATH David Sims (6-0, 208) was to be with Jeffery at Alabama on Saturday. He's also been to Tennessee and will visit Georgia Tech on March 29.
Clemson is in good shape to possibly land a commitment next month from DB Craig Loston (6-3, 208) of Aldine, Texas. He plans to visit with his mother for the spring game and said last week he could make a pledge that weekend. "I was going to commit to Clemson but my mom said to wait," Loston said. "My cousin (Russell Shepard ) committed to LSU, and I like LSU, and my mom told me to wait until after I visit Clemson to give me something to compare. I've been to LSU several times." Loston holds 20 offers, and said Clemson is particularly appealing. "I like the way they play," he said. "I like their style and I think I would fit in well with their defense." Loston had 68 tackles and three interceptions last season. As a receiver, he had 22 catches for 847 yards and seven TDs.
Identical twins DE Tariq (6-4, 225) and TE Tyrell (6-4, 219) Edwards of Marlboro County were to visit Clemson on Saturday. Tariq has offers from Clemson, USC and Vanderbilt and also is getting interest from N.C. State, UNC, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, Georgia, Georgia Tech and Alabama. He attended USC's junior day and visited Virginia Tech and UNC. Last season, Tariq had 83 tackles, five sacks, three interceptions and he blocked five punts. Tyrell has not been offered, but according to his coach Dean Boyd, that's because he's mostly played quarterback and schools want to see him this spring at other positions. Boyd said USC and Clemson are indicating they will offer.
Clemson recently offered Marlboro County WR Kinsman Thomas (6-3, 195), according to Boyd. Thomas also was scheduled to visit Clemson on Saturday. He's been to USC but the Gamecocks have not yet offered. Vanderbilt has offered.
Timberland OL Quinton Washington (6-4, 315) has offers from USC, Clemson, Tennessee, N.C. State, Alabama and Maryland. He's also hearing from Notre Dame, Nebraska, Miami, LSU and Oklahoma. He went to NC State's junior day.
Battery Creek OL Aljanon Robinson (6-4, 270) is hearing from USC, LSU and N.C. State. He also likes Michigan State.
Basketball news
6-8 junior Milton Jennings of Pinewood Prep attended Clemson's game Sunday against Virginia Tech and the Tigers appear to be in good shape with him. Jennings could make a soft commitment to a school by the end of this month or sometime in April, leaving him the option to make other official visits in the fall.
He's also been looking at USC, Florida, Georgetown, UCLA, Connecticut and Virginia.
