One of the fifteen eligible dogs at the afternoon dog show makes his way to the stage during the dog show at the Charleston Animal Society's grand opening of the JASPCA Facility on Remount Road in North Charleston Saturday. The more than 30,000 square foot facility features hundreds of kennels, a spay/neuter clinic and meeting and education spaces.

Danielle Robb, a volunteer from Summerville, holds Blue at the grand opening of the new Charleston Animal Society JASPCA Facility on Remount Road Saturday. In addition to tours of the facility and dog shows, the results of the Spike vs. Biscuit "election" were announced. Spike the dog won.

The votes are in.
By a margin of just 86 votes, Spike the Dog won the coveted presidency of the Charleston Animal Society. He beat Biscuit the Cat 1,933 to 1,847 votes.
"Spike's first official act as president is to overcome any campaign divisiveness and invite Biscuit, with some second thoughts, to serve as his vice president," Charles Karesh, president of the animal society's board, told a crowd gathered Saturday for the grand opening of the agency's new facility.
Biscuit didn't hiss back, so we'll assume she accepted the invite.
Formerly the John Ancrum Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the agency welcomed the community to tour its new 31,000-square-foot center at 2455 Remount Road in North Charleston near the Charleston International Airport.
The new center is double the size of the old building behind the Charleston County Detention Center. It has climate-controlled rooms, natural light, 140 cat kennels and 162 dog kennels, a small animal room, large outdoor play and exercise areas, surgical suites, a spay/neuter clinic, get-acquainted rooms and meeting and educational areas.
"We're treating our animals pretty doggone good," North Charleston Mayor Keith Summey said. "We as a community are only as good as we treat our animals."
Mount Pleasant Mayor Harry Hallman said everyone in the community can be proud of the new animal shelter.
Charleston County Council Chairman Tim Scott talked about Karesh's dedication to the $11.3 million project, which is being paid for with private donations and contributions from local governments. "This facility is worth every penny," Scott said.

$11,300,000 for dogs and cats. What a wonderful use of money. After you send those donations and tax dollars don't forget to ask for someone else to pay for your health care.

If I ever win the lottery, the first million goes to these precious creatures. Nothing and nobody can love as unconditionally as these animals do. I pray that they will all find loving and responsible homes.

If the government wants to give some of my tax money away then I would rather it go to helping innocent animals that give back more than they ever ask for.
Better to them than to some lazy lowlife sucking the system dry.
At least this was payed for with mostly private donations.

Listen, I went to the SPCA in GC to get a dog for my child. First, we were asked what kind of dog we were looking for. When we told them, we were told that they were sorry, they couldn't help us with that type at that particular time. When I asked them about the mix they were supposed to have, they said that they still had it. What the???
We then checked out the dog and decided to take it. We were then that maybe bringing home the puppy with a 10 r old is a mistake. Again, what the??? It was a dachsund/chihuahua mix, not a pit or anything. We then filled out ALOT of paperwork. They asked things like sq. footage of my house, amount of $$$ I was willing to spend on animal a year, how much sq. footage of said house is going to be for dog. They then wanted the vet records of my dog at home. After all of that, I couldn't even take the dog home that day. They said there was a 3 day cooling off period, to make sure I wasn't doing this on a whim.
After all of that, They informed me that I was turned down for possible adoption. YES, I WAS TURNED DOWN AT THE POUND!
Now, I could see it if I was a convicted felon, or had my picture in the paper for animal cruelty. But, no, I'm just a homeowner with a 10 yr. old little girl that wanted a little house dog.
What did I do? I opened the paper, found a dachsund to good home ad, and gave that one a home instead. Cost me $40 more, but less headache, and got to take it then.
So, I really don't care for spending this much on this. I hear someone from the SPCA on the radio some mornings. When talking about an animal, she says "we are taking applications for it starting today" Applications? Shouldn't the first one there that fills out the paper get it, or do they interview someone like for a job?

I was amazed at the info they wanted. When we left we were stunned. Sat in the car for a few minutes just staring out the window. Couldn't believe I got denied at the pound. I could leave there, go down and purchase a $30,000 truck, then go down to RTG and buy new furniture, but I was denied one of their HOMELESS mutts.
Maybe that's why they have so many???

forget, a young lady I know had a similar problem at the Leeds Ave. facility. It was quite simple. She wanted an orange kitten for her mother for Christmas. She told them this, and they said that she could not by any means adopt a pet for her mother. She already was falling for the kitten, so she told them fine, that she would keep it herself. They said that she better because they were going to check up on her. The clincher... this young lady is a police officer!
She said that she had never encountered such rude people.
Do they think that people are going to pay that money to adopt an animal to torture and abuse it? If that was the case then they could just pick up a stray.

So, it just wasn't just me. I was afraid I was unfit. Worried they were going to come by and take the lab and maybe my child, too.

I wanted two dogs from the leeds avenue facility. Both hounds, both just for personal buddies. I wanted 2 so they could amuse each other when I was working. I made the mistake of saying I might use them for rabbit hunting dogs, though I did say I never used dogs for hunting and it would just be if they seemed to take to it and that I had no intention of trying to train them to hunt. They refused me not because I might possibly make hunt dogs of them, but because I hunted period.
I sent two friends to get the dogs instead and say they would be in a fenced yard, they got the dogs and gave them to me. Been fine dogs. I live on 26 acres with a few miles of woods behind my house before so much as a field, and they love it.
The people at that facility are just jerks, and to spend 11 million dollars for a facility for them is just plain idiocy.
