There are better ways to fight the midday slump than drinking coffee (though maybe they're not as quick and tasty). In his "Ask the Doc" column in the July/August edition of Vegetarian Times, Washington-based nutrition expert Neal Barnard, founder of the vegetarian advocacy group Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, suggests basics, such as upping your sleep and exercise. He slips in the benefits of a vegan diet by using his favorite endurance athletes, marathoners Brendan Brazier and Scott Jurek, both vegans, as examples of natural peppiness.
