Storms hit Lowcountry, more to come

Severe thunderstorms pounded the Lowcountry this afternoon, forming funnel clouds and dropping hail in some areas.

The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the area until 9 p.m. Sunday.

"We're not out of the woods yet," said Joe Calderone, meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Charleston.

Calderone said they received reports of 1-inch hail in Mount Pleasant and on Remount Road and Rivers Avenue in North Charleston. Residents in Mount Pleasant and Hanahan also reported seeing funnel clouds, but there were no reports of the clouds touching down.

Calderone said there was minimal damage reported in the storm that stretched from Savannah to Georgia.

He said the Weather Service is monitoring another storm over southern Alabama and southwest Georgia.
