Art of the auction: The place to find the functional, freakish and funny
It's Saturday morning and people have begun arriving at the barn on Coleman Boulevard in Mount Pleasant. Some are hoping to find the unexpected. Others are expecting to see the unusual.
What they all want to get is something worth talking about, at a price that just can't be beat.
This particular crowd has come for the auction at Linda Page's Thieves Market. But similar scenes take place around the Lowcountry on Saturdays and other days at Droze's in Ridgeville, Roumillat's in West Ashley, Seymour's in Walterboro and numerous others auction companies.
In June, at least 35 auctions were scheduled within a 45-minute drive of peninsular Charleston, according to AuctionZip, one of the more popular online auction sites. Most featured home furnishings, including antiques and collectibles, from estates and individual consignors.
