Legislature adjourns after reviewing vetoes

COLUMBIA — A few minutes before 7 p.m., the Legislature adjourned, having overridden nearly all of Gov. Mark Sanford's vetoes.

Both the House and Senate voted to reject Sanford's veto of a bill intended to get more homes and businesses equipped with fire sprinklers.

In all, 15 of the 20 vetoes issued by the governor were overturned and will not be enrolled to become law. Some go into effect immediately.

Senate President Pro Tem Glenn McConnell, R-Charleston, is concerned that at least one of the bills will land South Carolina in court because the legislation contains mostly unrelated provisions.

The lawmakers sent two final bills to the governor's desk concerning revenue shifting to cover shortfalls projected to occur in the coming months while the Legislature is not in session. The second bill concerns DNA sampling to prove a person's guilt or innocence.
