Polls again beckon Lowcountry voters
A small slice of Lowcountry voters will return to the polls from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday to decide runoffs in the state House District 111 race as well as the Berkeley County Council District 3 race.
The Democratic contest in District 111, which includes parts of downtown Charleston, North Charleston and West Ashley, pits Iraq war veteran Clay Middleton against Charleston City Councilman Wendell Gilliard. In the Berkeley County GOP runoff, former County Councilman Bob Call faces Billy Elrod.
Neither winner will have opposition from the other party in November.
District 111 voters won't be able to vote Tuesday if they cast a ballot in the Republican primary June 10, and neither will District 3 voters who voted in the June 10 Democratic primary. All other registered voters within those districts are eligible, even if they didn't vote earlier this month.
Both counties will use the same polling places in those districts that they used earlier this month. Anyone with questions in Charleston County should call 744-VOTE (744-8683). Berkeley voters with questions should call 719-4056 in Moncks Corner; 723-3800, extension 4056, in the Charleston area; or 567-3142, extension 4056, in the St. Stephen area.
Turnout in both counties' primaries was between 10 percent and 20 percent earlier this month and could be even lighter Tuesday, particularly with rain in the forecast.
