Scott win shows times changing
The Post and Courier
Tim Scott thanked his diverse group of supporters Tuesday night. 'None of them were going to work for the black guy,' he said Wednesday. 'They were working for the cause.'
Tim Scott's victory Tuesday in the District 117 state House race marks yet another milestone in a remarkable year of historic firsts for black candidates.
Whether it was Barack Obama winning over the white vote in Iowa on his way to becoming the first black candidate to be nominated for president of a major party, or Scott's winning over white voters in Charleston and Berkeley counties to become the first black Republican to serve in Columbia since Reconstruction, times are changing.
Just last month, state Republicans marked another first by electing a black businessman from Rock Hill to serve as one of South Carolina's two national committee members.
While these events don't rewrite the intersection of race and politics, many experts say they prove that skin color isn't the determinative political force it once was.
Scott said he was proud to be the first black Republican elected to the Statehouse since Reconstruction, but he stressed that the largest message was what his accomplishment says about the party in South Carolina these days.
Scott said 97 volunteers — elderly, young voters, blacks, whites, Latinos and Filipinos — worked for him in the last 10 days of the campaign.
"This was a diverse group of people," he said. "None of them were going to work for the black guy. They were working for the cause."
South Carolina Republican Chairman Katon Dawson said Scott's victory is one sign of how the party has become more inclusive, but it's not the only one.
Last month, York County Republican Party chairman Glenn McCall became the first black from South Carolina to win a seat on the Republican National Committee. Several other black Republicans also sought state offices this year. "It's an exciting time for the Republican Party," Dawson said.
Scott's win is noteworthy because while Republicans have talked about reaching out to minority voters for years, but their efforts seldom extended beyond a news conference or press release, said Clemson University political scientist Bruce Ransom.
"This is significant, though at this point we know it's only one seat," Ransom said. "Still, you can no longer say that no black Republicans have been elected to the state Legislature in South Carolina."
Coupled with McCall's win, Ransom said the GOP outreach effort no longer can be criticized as pure rhetoric. "This is not earthshaking progress. Some might call it a token outcome, but nonetheless it is a breakthrough, and you've got to start somewhere," he said.
McCall said Scott's win and his own victory show that Republican voters aren't really concerned about race. "It's about ideas, who has the vision and can articulate that vision and get people excited about it in that party," he said. "It's putting us head and shoulders above other states in just walking the talk and engaging all people form all backgrounds into the party and our ideas."
Scott was the only one of three black Republicans to win his Statehouse primary Tuesday.
Dale C. Phillips finished last in a five-way primary for the Senate District 10 seat in Abbeville County, and Starletta Hairston of Hilton Head Island lost in the House District 123 primary.
Still, there are at least three others who have a chance to make history alongside Scott when the General Assembly reconvenes next year.
Marvin Rogers of Rock Hill, Steven M. Smith of North Charleston and Bonnie Adams of Green Pond had no primary opponents and will appear as Republicans on the ballots this fall. Smith is challenging incumbent Rep. David Mack, D-North Charleston.
The next milestone might be for a black Republican to win in a predominantly black district. Scott tried years ago but was defeated soundly by incumbent Sen. Robert Ford.
Ford, who faced his own primary battle Tuesday, said of Scott's win, "I guess he needs to be congratulated, but I didn't know nothing about that race."
Nationally, the Republican Party has had some prominent blacks, such as former Rep. J.C. Watts of Oklahoma and Sen. Edward Brooke of Massachusetts, though there are no black Republicans in Congress today.
House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn has said he doesn't expect to see a day when race won't matter in the nation's politics, but he can foresee a time when it isn't the determining factor.
The third-ranking Democrat in the U.S. House, Clyburn has celebrated Obama's historic win by noting that he is scheduled to accept the party's nomination on the 45th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream Speech," a speech in which King said that he hoped that his children will live in a world where they "will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character."
Clyburn, whose parents identified with the Republican Party while he was growing up, also welcomed McCall's victory. "That's as it should be," he said. "I wished they would had done it years ago."

I voted for Tim Scott too (for all those that always throw the racist label my way) not because of his skin color but because of his conservative views. Just like I'll vote for him when he runs for govenor one day. If the republicans put up say a JC Watts would they win the white house this yr? I doubt it because Barak is telling his party's voters what they want to hear and that's how the government can do more for you, take care of you, etc. All this on the backs of the middle class!

Oh,Oh, JohnQ must be getting nervous. An African American leaving the liberal plantation. This is not in the play book. Someone search for references by Karl Marx or V.I. Lenin to this problem. Maybe the liberals can marginalize Tim Scott somehow. Conservatives and capitalism are evil. The democrat party (not the party of Lincoln )is the true party for African Americans.
Well I got to go to work now so enjoy your day.

Just disregard Thomas1776's points. They are clearly the lunatic rants of someone who would select a president based on fashion accessories like lapel pins. It is fine to disagree with Obama on the merits of what he stands for, but that sort of nonsense is absurd.
On the subject at hand, however, I think this article overplays the significance of Scott's election. Sure, he might be the first black Republican elected since the 19th century. But, the real question is this: How many blacks have run as Republicans for the Statehouse since the 19th century?
One often hears claims of racial bias in voting patterns in civil rights lawsuits against government bodies (like Charleston County a year or so ago). The fact of the matter is that white people do not vote AGAINST black; they vote FOR Republicans (more than blacks do at least). In a conservative area, it is not surprising that few blacks are elected to public office without gerrymandering or some such device. Jim Clyburn would never be elected to office, for instance, if his Congressional district were not stretched out so far. He would be voted down based on his liberal positions, not his skin color.

It is curious that most blacks back the party that controlled the South during the days of legal slavery, led the South to secede, ended Reconstruction by taking power back from the Republicans in the 1870's, passed the Jim Crow laws, and belatedly put a Confederate battle flag on top of the top of the SC capitol in the early 1950's (so they say now) to honor the southern fallen during the War of Northern Aggression, fought the Civil Rights Act tooth and nail, and continues the their historical plantation control through economic slavery to the government.

Race Race Race..............,Racism will not and can not end until we stop injecting color into every story. The liberal newspapers refuse to do this in order to keep a bias prgram going. How many people today wouldn't know Obama is black???? this should not come up again, he should be looked at the democratic candidate but the liberals will not let the race agenda die it's called race baiting,if he wins it's because he is black and we needed change , if he loses it's because not enough white people would vote for him again the race card.....Now Tim Scott cant even win on his name and values it has to be his race as the top story. Where are Jessie, Sharpen, Dot to avenge this wrong, oh yeah he won and the paper used the black words they need to hear...Such a two faced agenda.

A lot of the facts from 1776 come from Obama's own books, are you blind liberals going to call Obama a liar for writing that about himself. Republicans have done more to help people get out of poverty than the democrat party has done in the last 30 years. Has everyone of the liberals forgotten that (Democrat) Woodrow Wilson allowed the first movie ever to be shown in the White House, and the name of it was "The Birth of a Nation". This was a racist film that denegrated blacks as less evolved than white people and the quote from the (democrat) president was "It's all so terribly true".

Liberals need to wake up and smell the junk they are shovelling. When Bush took office the country was in the middle of a recession thanks to the high taxes of Bill Clinton and his short lived Democrat controlled congress. Bush cut taxes and the economy started moving again. Pelosi and the liberals get control a year and a half ago and again the economy was headed for recession but now Pres. Bush has worked to prevent that and even the Fed Chair says there is not much likelyhood of a recession. You revisionist liberals and Bush bashers better wake up before you end up being controlled by the government even more than you already are. The republicans right now have a lot of history to reread and they must relearn the truth about big gov't and the catastrophic pitfalls of the socialistic path they are on but at least they don't promote the murder of innocent unborn children like the democrats.

Ok people, you can't have it both ways:
Lot of you are claiming that the "liberal media" is stuffing race down our throats and race baiting but same ones of you are the first to jump on a board about illegal immigrants or some random black person that commits a crime and decides to interject race into it. Talk about Mexican and Latinos and how they are all criminals and then rant later about how black people need to do this and black people need to do that, often when the articles have nothing to do with race or history in general but rather involve individuals of a certain race or ethnicity.
You can't have it both ways, if the media is the one doing the race baiting they sure have a lot of you hook, line and sinker. IMHO, I don't think it's the case...I think the post and courier is playing to its audience, and by evidence of many of the posts on these boards ignorance related to race relations is still alive and well!

(no one seems to remember those speeches) The US economy is BY FAR the strongest economy of any nation on earth. And what do we hear from the Democrats? DOOM AND GLOOM. Worried? I'm not worried. Scott is a man who is beholden to his ideology, NOT to a party. THAT is what makes him such a promising leader.

You can't smoke in just any restaurant or in any public building that you pay taxes to support, you can't buy liquor on certain days and you CAN get arrested for dancing naked under a full moon, even in your own back yard. If you are in your house where no one can see you then you can but you CANNOT dance in the open air in the nude without the risk of being arrested. You are losing your freedoms, every time a local, state or federal legislature passes a law you lose a freedom you once had. Don't have to like it, don't have to believe it but it is still true. Welcome to the future America... unless things are turned around.

I notice that the liberals like John Q and Newt deny the facts put in front of them but they offer no evidence to refute the claims they just say "it's not true" or it's "conservative propaganda". Try using some historical evidence instead of blindly denying the truth and maybe, just maybe others may take you more seriously. If all you have is crying and whining and calling people liars, when they are providing documentation for their positions it makes you look foolish. The best you have to counter the claims of the abuses by the liberals over the last four decades is someone talking about Michelle Obama using the word "Whitey". Come on man, some real evidence is historical that proves something did happen, not more denials about what didn't happen. Revisionists always try to change topic or deny the truth. Give us some facts and figures that refute what tripsa was saying if you don't believe it, not just denials. I read parts of Obama's books from Amazon.com and they indicate he was raised in the largest muslim country, at a muslim school, as well as a catholic school but he was enrolled as a muslim, not a catholic. He is by no means a Christian according to the Word of God which is the true source of the definition. If he does not repent and accept Christ he will burn in Hell with his mother whom HE states turned away from Christianity and away from Christ. My gosh if "whitey" is the worst name Michelle Obama has ever called a white person I'll be totally suprised. You say you know about the erosion of our freedoms but you don't want to embrace it? Does that make it go away? Are you saying you don't want to take a stand to fight against the erosion of our freedoms?

Now, the world don't move to the beat of just one drum,
What might be right for you, may not be right for some.
A man is born, he's a man of means.
Then along come two, they got nothing but their jeans.
But they got, Diff'rent Strokes.
It takes, Diff'rent Strokes.
It takes, Diff'rent Strokes to move the world.
Everybody's got a special kind of story
Everybody finds a way to shine,
It don't matter that you got not alot
So what,
They'll have theirs, and you'll have yours, and I'll have mine.
And together we'll be fine....
Because it takes, Diff'rent Strokes to move the world.
Yes it does.
It takes, Diff'rent Strokes to move the world.

You take the good,
You take the bad,
You take them both and there you have the facts of life.
The facts of life.
There's a time you gotta go and show
You're growin' now,
You know about the facts of life.
The facts of life.
When the world never seems,
To be living up to your dreams.
And suddenly you're finding out,
The facts of life are all about you.
All about you.
You-u-u-u,
A-ll about you.
It takes a lot to get em right,
But you're learnin the facts of life.
Learnin the facts of life.
Learnin the facts of life.
Learnin the facts of li-fe.

We're a movin' on up,
(We're a movin on up.)
To the east side.
(Mo-vin on up.)
To a de-luxe apartment,
In the sky-.
Mo-vin' on up
(Mo-vin on up.)
To the east side,
(Mo-vin on up.)
We finally got a piece of the pie.
Fish don't fry in the kitchen,
A beans don't burn on the grill.
Took a whole lot of trying
Just to get up that hill.
Now we're up in the big leagues,
Gettin our turn at bat.
As long as we live
It's you and me baby.
There ain't nothing wrong with that.
We're a moving on up
(Mo-vin on up.)
To the east side,
(Mo-vin on up.)
To a de-luxe apartment
In the sky-.
Mo-vin on up
(Mo-vin on up.)
To the east side.
(Mo-vin on up.)
We finally got a piece of the pie-.

LOL - The NAACP probably wants reruns of the Jeffersons banned. Old George worked his butt off to get ahead. No handouts, no legislation, he earned it. Same as Tim Scott, JC Watts, Michael Steele. Hey, if we're lucky, Janice Rogers Brown will be the first black woman on the US Supreme Court.

What is the percentage of votes vs elegible voters?
50%, 40%?
If I had to guess that number is pretty low. Too many people I know simply don't care to vote when they could.
Our generation (I'm 26) seems too indifferent...(hope I'm wrong).
Maybe it comes with age?

Reporter: What did you think of the Senator's speech?
Obama supporter: It was great! This guy's tremendous! This is awesome! Obama's incredible!
Reporter: What did he say?
Obama supporter: I don't know, but it sounded great!

I rarely notice the color of a person's skin except at the beach.
Don't want to vote for anyone in the general. Just have to decide who to vote against.

JohnQ many WMD's were found, several times over... it hit the news and disappeared the same day in many cases
they even found a giant stash of uranium that they spent weeks getting out of iraq, but because it wasn't enriched yet it wasn't BIG news to those trying to keep the truth down in the name of bashing Bush...
it was several tons of uranium, ricin and other chemicals that they found at different times but amazingly brushed them off as unimportant... I'm still scratching my head over all that
so yes, they found WMD... but they had already turned the page in the news by then and were on to other things, Saddam was already debunked and things were supposidly under control... no need to make a big deal out of big deals
