Packman to hit Lowcountry airwaves

Mark Packer says he's been waiting a long time for his popular "PrimeÂ-Time with The Packman" show to grace the Lowcountry's radio airwaves.
That wait is almost over.
Starting soon - perhaps as early as today - Packer's long-running and successful program will be running on WQNT 1450-AM from 3-7 p.m. on weekdays.
"Charleston has been kind of the missing piece in the puzzle for us," Packer said Wednesday by phone from Charlotte, where the show originates.
Packer, son of longtime CBS college basketball analyst Billy Packer, is nearing 11 years running a show that is syndicated in 14 cities, including Raleigh, GreensÂ-boro, N.C., and Columbia.
The show is known for its quick pace, irreverent humor and multitude of guests.
On Wednesday alone, Packer said, he'd interviewed Georgia football coach Mark Richt, PGA golfer Boo Weekley, and former baseball great Jim Palmer.
Packer, a Clemson graduate, will go head-to-head against Bobby Hartin, a former South Carolina cheerleader whose show "FanTalk" runs from 3-6 p.m. on WTMZ 910-AM.
"Our show is really fanÂ-interactive," Packer said. "It's really taken off and become a Carolinas sports show.
Regardless of what team you follow, you're probably going to get some love and some hate in the same day."
Packer said WQNT is waiting on a special phone line to be installed before the show can air.

Will be nice to have a Clemson guy on the radio down here. Although I don't mind Bobby Hartin, the people who call his show are awful and brutal to listen to.

I am a long time listener of Bobby Hartin, but I have not listened nearly as much since that jerk Darren Goldwater came on. Bobby used to be a fun show to call and listen to, but after Goldwater came it got to be more and more of how the hosts were always right and the callers were always wrong. Also, Hartin is an obvious bigot and homophobe and it just got to be less and less funny and more creepy.
I took to listening to the Sports Drive in Columbia to get any breaking Gamecock info, because Goldwater and Hartin never even bothered to make a phone call to find out what was going on. Fans were calling in to tell THEM the info they got from the Columbia station. I wish we could get a sports station on FM like 93.1 in Columbia, but I guess that would be too much to ask....

Anytime Darren starts with his Penn State this and that nonsense or the long winded Boston John comes on, I switch stations for about twenty minutes. DG is a young guy who thinks he knows everything. But I'll continue to listen to Bobby first because he is local and a Gamecock.

Chanticleer: you're absolutely right. They ARE awful and brutal to listen to. I'm not really a big fan of the show although I've listened to it a few times. I'm not really a Clemson or Carolina fan. That's probably because I'm from Pennsylvania. But if I had to choose I'd take Clemson over Carolina because there's no way I could support a team that calls itself "Cocks."

Bobby Hartin's show sounds horrible. Half the time he uses the phrases "I don't know who it was" or "What was that team" or even "A caller will call in and tell me." And if a caller calls, half of them either have no clue on the subject, or talk just as bad as he does. He needs to go. He knows mostly about local prep sports, but most of the time he plugs his bar. Bring in some young people (Darren sounds like a strip club DJ trying to talk sports) that will be entertaining, should have a try out.

Anyone familiar with the old song lyrics "you don't know what you've got 'till its gone"?? Bobby Hartin's show may not be primetime ESPN quality, but I think he does a credible job while making an effort to be as unbiased as possible...I'm not sure if any of Hartin's detractors who've posted above have listened to "The Packman", but IMO there's more quality and rational discussion of sports on the local Charleston show than on Packman. And if you think the callers are bad here.......do you have a shock coming.
In a nutshell, having listened to Mark Packer for years, I'll not be listening to his daily show here in Charleston because there is an alternative.
