Choice for new Citadel athletic director set

The Citadel will name the University of Maryland's Larry Leckonby as its next athletic director Friday, a source at the military school confirmed Wednesday.

Leckonby is currently senior associate athletic director for business and finance at Maryland.

Leckonby will succeed Les Robinson as The Citadel's AD. Robinson, hired in 2000, will retire at the end of the month.

The Citadel's search for a new athletic director drew 69 applicants and was whittled to a final three by the school's search committee. Leckonby beat out the other finalists, Alabama-Birmingham senior associate AD Lee Moon and Newberry athletic director Andrew Carter.

The Citadel announced Wednesday that it would name its new athletic director at 1 p.m. Friday. The Board of Visitors' athletic committee will meet at 9 a.m. Friday to confirm the hire. Leckonby could not be reached for comment Wednesday.

Leckonby is a 1979 graduate of Duke, where he played lacrosse. He also has worked at Houston, Boston College, Old Dominion, Boston University, Massachusetts and Duke. He and his wife, Cris, have two children.

Leckonby was hired as the Maryland athletic department's chief financial officer in 2002. He manages the department's $51.2 million operating budget and capital projects.

Also in his charge are the athletic business office and ticket office, and information technology. His Maryland bio says that he focuses "on keeping the department fiscally solvent through creative revenue opportunities and various cost containment initiatives."

Those skills will come in handy for a Citadel athletic department that last year projected a $1.4 million budget deficit for 2007-08. The Board of Visitors' athletics committee is slated to approve a budget for 2008-09 on Friday.
