Charleston losing nonstop flights to Cleveland

Continental Airlines is eliminating the only nonstop service between Charleston and Cleveland later this summer under cutbacks announced Thursday.

The once-daily flight will not be offered after Sept. 3, the close of the peak summer travel season. Savannah also is losing its Cleveland service.

Continental said it is slashing 13 percent of available seats in the Ohio city and nearly 8 percent in its hometown of Houston, its second biggest hub.

Continental's biggest hub at Newark Liberty outside New York City will see capacity trimmed by 3 percent.

Nine smaller U.S. cities will lose Continental service altogether, including Chattanooga, Tenn., Montgomery, Ala., and Reno, Nev.

The cuts are part of a plan announced last week to slash capacity by 11 percent. They are in response to "record-high fuel prices that are creating unprecedented challenges for the airline industry," the company said in a statement.

Continental added that it plans to cut most of the 3,000 jobs anticipated "through voluntary programs."

The carrier currently offers an average of about seven flights a day between Charleston International Airport and Houston, Newark and Cleveland.

Half of Ohio lives in Charleston...I'm surprised there weren't more direct flights to begin with!
