Paul Simmons

Born: Charleston.

Occupation: Costume designer, tailor.

Education: Clemson University, certificate in tailoring and patternmaking; attended South Carolina State University.

Family: Wife, Albertha; sons, Paul Jr. and Omar; daughters, Marcia and Shani; and eight grandchildren.

Nickname: Pants. Because I wore pants that were too long to be short and too short to be long. (Not ones he made.)

Favorite films you've worked on: "Malcolm X" and "Glory."

Reading: I like to read the Quran and Hadith (teachings of the Prophet Muhammad).

Places to go: The only trip I'm interested in now is to Mecca. Allah willing, that will be my first overseas trip.

Favorite places: I like every place I have been. It's a beautiful world. The mountains of Washington state are beautiful.

It would surprise people to know: I don't know what would surprise people.

Epitaph oR final words: I am proud that I am a Muslim and I wish this for everybody. You are supposed to want the good for others that you want for yourself.

Spiritual people would describe Paul Simmons as "centered." He knows and is comfortable with his place in the universe.

It shows in his simple and direct manner of speaking. And then there's the way he punctuates his conversation with laughter that seems to come out of nowhere as he sidesteps opportunities to take himself too seriously.

Simmons has played a role in dressing actors for more than 40 movies, documentaries and television projects. He's never moved from Charleston, but he's a long way from his days at Burke High School, where he first practiced the skills that would take him places.

The costume designer and owner of Paul Simmons Fashion Designer on Line Street has designed costumes and worked in wardrobe departments for movies featuring numerous Oscar winners and nominees. They include Angela Bassett, Russell Crowe, Robert De Niro, Albert Finney, Morgan Freeman, Peter Fonda, Whoopi Goldberg, Terrence Howard, Samuel L. Jackson, Queen Latifah and Denzel Washington.

"I was offered the opportunity to go to New York or California," Simmons says. "I always figured whatever I could do, I could do from here. If you can't make it at home, where are you going to make it?"

It's easy to say that his career began with "A House Divided: Denmark Vesey's Rebellion," filmed in Charleston in 1976. But it really began when he spotted a pair of pants in the window of the old Abraham's Men's Store on King Street.

Simmons inquired about the pants and store owner Abraham Bebergal told him they cost $25. Surprised, Simmons told him the pants were not worth that much. Bebergal insisted that they were. And Simmons said he could make the pants. Bebergal said that he couldn't. Simmons, who had no tailoring skills, asked Eddie Graham, the Burke High School tailoring teacher, to instruct him during recess and after school.

He completed the pants.

"I went back to Abraham and showed him the pants and he offered me a job to do alternations in 1963, and I worked there for a few months," Simmons says. Afterward, he worked at Jack Krawcheck's, first as a delivery guy, then as a tailor. About 1964, he became a tailor at Pearlman's Uniform Shop. Then, he moved on to Berlins in 1967 and was a tailor there for about three years.

"In these shops were the master tailors," he says. "Allah put me under a lot of good people. Allah allows you to go through these channels and you've got to manage that journey."

After receiving a certificate in tailoring and patternmaking, he taught at Burke 1970-74 and was working at Graham's shop at Coming and Calhoun. When Graham died in the late 1970s, his shop became Simmons' first shop.

When "Denmark Vesey," which aired on PBS in 1982, was filmed in Charleston in 1976, the production company offered Simmons a job as a cutter in its wardrobe department. At the time, Simmons was working at the College of Charleston supervising the theater department's costume shop, as well as in Graham's shop. He left the college to work on the movie.

"The money they offered me for three months was more than the college would have paid me for a year," says Simmons, who saw it as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

But other opportunities would follow and Simmons designed costumes or was a supervisor in the wardrobe department for the movies "American Gangster," "Black Snake Moan, "Cold Mountain," "Amistad," "Glory," "Hustle and Flow" and "Malcolm X." He recently finished designing costumes for a movie about the late rap artist known as Notorious BIG or Biggie Smalls.

In addition to "Glory," productions with a Lowcountry connection include the television series "Army Wives" and the movies "Rich in Love," based on a novel of the same name by Josephine Humphreys, and "Swamp Thing," filmed in Berkeley County.

"It's been thirty-something years and I do love the business. However, I march to my own beat," he says. Simmons explains that he accepts or refuses assignments based on values reflected in the scripts.

Allah figures prominently and constantly in Simmons' life.

Simmons researched Islam for his work on the movie "Malcolm X" and converted to the faith afterward.

"I had cut Malcolm off in the 1960s. Malcolm was teaching hate. I realized that Malcolm went to Mecca and discovered true Islam."

In studying Islam, he learned that Jesus said that the one coming after him will guide his followers to all the truths they needed to follow to find redemption. He says Jesus was speaking of Muhammad with those words, found in Matthew.

"The only way to be redeemed is that we submit to Allah, that we submit our will to his will," says Simmons, whose shop contains prayer posters and Qurans, Hadith or teachings of the Prophet Muhammad.

Simmons says he could not find the love for mankind in Christianity that he has found in Islam. He also says that he never experienced the peacefulness that he has before he converted to the faith.

"Today, I'm trying to spread this beautiful word," he says. "Allah willing, I'll be going to Mecca in the fall."

What a lovely story about the most vile evil ever known to mankind!
...
That the Post & Courier would allow this propaganda piece to soil it's pages is an affront to the only TRUE Savior... Jesus Christ.
...
The Bible tells us VERY clearly in Gal 1:8 "But even if we, or AN ANGEL FROM HEAVEN, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed."
...
Muhammad (an illiterate epileptic whose wife was a Christian) claims the angel Gabriel came to him 650 years after Jesus' resurrection, to give Muhammad authority over all people (how convenient that no one can verify any of this) and that Christianity is false.
...
To base your eternal salvation on one man's claims of a vision(a man who was prone to violent seizures and fits, at that) shows TOTAL lack of discernment, at best!
...
Jesus Christ, on the other hand, had literally hundreds of eye-witnesses who saw His miracles and resurrected body, and these witnesses chose to be tortured and killed instead of recanting their tale.
Jesus' own BROTHER was convinced of Jesus' deity!!! ...what would a family member of yours have to do to convince YOU that they are God?!?
...
NO archaeological find has EVER disproved ANYTHING from the Bible... there are literally hundreds of thousands of artifacts proving almost every story true.
...
Jesus fulfilled over 300 prophesies which were written as many as 1500 years before His birth to PROVE Himself to be the Messiah!!!
...
Anyone who genuinely looks at the facts, without bigoted bias, cannot dispute them.
...
SHAME on the Post and Courier for trying to lend credence to the face of EVIL!!!
...
This story belongs in some left-wing propaganda rag (The LA or NY Times) but NOT in South Carolina!!!

Here is a SHORT list of archaeological finds that prove the Bible to be true.
This is cited from Wikipedia, but I can give you COUNTLESS other cites.
I DEFY anyone to give ONE concrete fact wich proves ANY other religion to be true (including Islam).

[edit] Milestones after 1967
Following the Six-day War, archeologists conducted more extensive excavations within the city limits of modern Jerusalem. One highlight in particular came from Ketef Hinnom just southwest of the Old City: two small silver scrolls uniquely preserve Biblical texts older than the Dead Sea Scrolls. Both of these amulets contain the Priestly Blessing from the Book of Numbers; one also contains a quote found in parallel verses of Exodus (20:6) and Deuteronomy (5:10 and 7:9). The same verses appear again later in Daniel (9:4) and Nehemiah (1:5).

A major development of Processual and Post-processual archaeology has been the development of settlement studies in the highlands, which suggest that a process of state development only occurred after 950 BCE, possibly with the development of Omride Israel [18]

196878 Benjamin Mazar excavated Jerusalem (southwest corner of the Temple Mount)
196976 Yohanan Aharoni and Ze'ev Herzog excavated Beersheba

[edit] Confirmed Biblical structures
Gibeon pool (at el-Jib)
Hezekiah's tunnel under Jerusalem
Jericho's walls. John Garstang in the 1930s dated Jericho's destruction to around 1400 BC, but Kathleen Kenyon's excavation in the 1950s redated it to around 1550 BC. Bryant Wood's 1990 proposed redating of Kenyon's work to Garstang has not been supported by subsequent studies.(Radiocarbon Vol. 37, Number 2, 1995.). [1] [2]
Lachish siege ramp of Sennacherib
Pool of Siloam (unearthed in 2004)
Second Temple pre-Herodian Walls. The outline of the walls of the square platform that predates the Herodian expansion and, therefore, dates either form the reconstruciton in the Persian period under Ezra and Nehemiah or is a survival of the pre-exilic first Temple have been located on the surface of the present platform. The northwestern corner was visible (until it was concealed recently by a waqf) as the lowest step in a flight of stairs that parallets the eastern wall of the Mount, the north eastern corner as a protruding stone, the south eastern corner as a slight alteration in the angel of the eastern wall where the older platform joins the Herodian expansion. The courses of stone that form the center of the eastern wall are also pre-Herodian, and match the stone masonry of the north west corner of the original platform, now a concealed bottom step. (Leen and Kathleen Ritmeyer, Secrets of Jerusalem's Temple Mount,Biblical Archaeology Society, Washington D.C., 2006)
Second Temple (confirmed by Western/Wailing wall constructed by Herod the Great)
Shechem temple (spanning the late Bronze Age to the early Iron Age) corresponding to the "House of (the god) Baalberith" in Judges 9
19 tumuli located west of Jerusalem, undoubtedly dating to the Judean monarchy, but possibly representing sites of memorial ceremonies for the kings as mentioned in 2 Chronicles 16:14, 21:19, 32:33, and the book of Jeremiah 34:5
Gezer Walls and City Gate. Verification of the site comes from Hebrew inscriptions found engraved on rocks, several hundred meters from the tel. These inscriptions from the 1st century BCE read "boundary of Gezer."

[edit] Artifacts from documented excavations
Arad ostraca (#18 mentions the Temple in Jerusalem)
Azariah bulla (seal impression) found in 1978 during Yigal Shiloh's excavation of old Jerusalem. The inscription consists of two lines of writing separated by two parallel lines. It reads "Belonging to Azaryahu, son of Hilkiyahu." The impression does not mention the title of the owner. Yigal Shiloh, "A Group of Hebrew Bullae From the City of David," Israel Exploration Journal 36 (1986), pp. 1638
Balaam texts (ink/paint on plaster found at Deir Alla in Jordan that parallels Numbers chapters 2224)
Black Obelisk of Shalmaneser III, which depicts Jehu, son of Omri, and also mentions Hazael of Aram/Damascus/Syria (2 Kings 810)
Caiaphas (Qafa) family ossuaries (discovered in 1990 at the Jerusalem Peace Forest)
Ebla (Tell Mardikh) cuneiform archives. These include a king of Ebla named Ebrum, who some identify as the Biblical patriarch Eber (or Heber), after whom the Hebrews were named.[citation needed] Also reported are references to people with Semitic names and gods similar to those in the Bible. They are also rumored[citation needed] to contain references to the same five cities mentioned in the book of Genesis: Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, Zeboim, and Bela/Zoar in the same order as in Genesis 14. The government of Syria continues to withhold complete publication of the texts, and this story remains a rumor.[citation needed] Quoting Paolo Matthiae:
The tablets cover a thousand years before Abraham, and a thousand years, even in the fourth millennium before Christ, was a very, very long time. They tell us much, but what they don't tell us-what they can't tell us-is whether the Bible is true or not. They have nothing to do with the Bible, at least not directly, and what we have here is not a biblical expedition. If we have tablets with legends similar to those of the Bible it means only that such legends existed round here long before the Bible." ( C. Bermant and M. Weitzman, Ebla: A Revelation In Archaeology, Op. Cit., p. 2.)

Lachish reliefs from Sennacherib's palace at Nineveh (depicting his conquest of it)
Nabonidus cylinder
A cuneiform inscription found at the Temple of Shamash in Sippara that names Belshazzar as the son of the last king of Babylon
Daniel chapters 5, 7, and 8 name Belshazzar as a king, but that was probably due to Aramaic convention (e.g., the bilingual inscription on the statue of Haddayishi from Gozan calls him a "governor" in the Akkadian language but "king" in Aramaic); also note that Belshazzar offers third place in his kingdom as a prize rather than second
Nabonidus and not Belshazzar, as stated in Daniel, was the last King of Babylon. Moreover, the inscriptions show that up to the time that Belshazzar was killed by Gubaru (one of Cyrus's governors), he was referred to as "The King's Son." At no time did Babylonian records refer to Belshazzar as a king. Moreover, he died before his father did. Nabonidus/Babylon was captured by the Persians under Cyrus the Great-not Darius the Mede as stated in Daniel 5:3031. Belzhassar was the son of Nabonidus. Nor was Nabonidus or Belzhassar a son or descendant of Nebuchadnezzar as stated in Dan.5:2,11,18.
Nebo-Sarsekim Tablet from Sippar that names an official of Nebuchadrezzar II from Jeremiah 39:3
Pim weights
First specimen found by R.A.S. Macalister at Gezer; many others found since
Inscribed with a previously unknown word that facilitated a better translation of 1Samuel 13:21
Pontius Pilate inscription found in secondary use in a stairway of the Roman theater in Caesarea
"The prefect of Judaea, Pontius Pilate, erected the Tiberium (in honor of Tiberius Caesar)"
Actual text of 3-line inscription (eroded portion in brackets is speculative but undisputed):
TIBERIEUM
[PON]TIUS PILATUS
[PRAEF]ECTUS IUDA[EA]E
Sargon II's Conquest of Samaria inscription (ANET 284) found by P.E. Botta at Khorsabad in 1843: "I besieged and conquered Samaria, led away as booty 27,290 inhabitants of it. ... The town I rebuilt better than it was before and settled therein people from countries which I myself had conquered." (2 Kings 17:2324)
Shelomit seal, found during a Jerusalem excavation with a name mentioned in 1Chronicles 3:19 and Ezra 8:10
[Son of] Immer (- [] [?]) seal impression stamped on bulla
Found September 27, 2005, while sifting debris discarded from the Temple Mount of Jerusalem in 1999

Tiglath-Pileser III's inscriptions found by A.H. Layard at Nimrud:
ANET 282: "I received the tribute of ... Jehoahaz of Judah" (incident not mentioned in the Bible)
ANET 283: "As for Menahem I overwhelmed him ... I placed Hoshea as king over them." (alternate perspective in 2 Kings 15:19 and 17:3)

Christianity is the ONLY true religion.
I understand, that in today's PC world, that this statement doesn't go over real well...

That doesnt stop this statement from being factual.

Jesus is GOD!
He is THE way
THE truth
The life...
and NO ONE comes to the Fater except through Him.

He tells us we must be born again.
He ALONE grants eternal life
because he ALONE paid the price that we simply cannot to redeem mankind from sin.

We have all sinned and deserve God's judgment. God, the Father, sent His only Son to satisfy that judgment for those who believe in Him. Jesus, the creator and eternal Son of God, who lived a sinless life, loves us so much that He died for our sins, taking the punishment that we deserve, was buried, and rose from the dead according to the Bible. If you truly believe and trust this in your heart, receiving Jesus alone as your Savior, declaring, "Jesus is Lord," you will be saved from judgment and spend eternity with God in heaven.

elisabetta,
you say:
Nobody is challenging your Christian views, just your views on Islam

However, my views on Christianity were very much challenged by "givepeaceachance" by her questioning my facts:
NO archaeological find has EVER disproved ANYTHING from the Bible... there are literally hundreds of thousands of artifacts proving almost every story true.

she says:
"Are you sure about that? Because the bible is being disproved everyday."

I simply proved her wrong with the overwhelming evidence.
I still defy anyone to show me anything proving Christianity or the Bible untrue.
...and any other religion true for that matter.

Please feel free to correct my views on Islam... but everything I wrote in my original comment is factual.

And yes, I have read everything I posted and much, much more.

And yes, we have freedom of religion in this country, but that obviously does not make every religion true or even credible.

Christianity is the ONLY true religion.
Islam, and all other religions are simply based on someone's fantasy or lunacy or demonic possession.
Therefore, they are all false.

I say all of this in hopes that all of you can simply see the truth about Jesus, and accept Him as Lord and Savior.

Jesus rules.

please feel free to give me ONE example of the Bible being proven wrong.
You are unable to give me even ONE scientifically, peer reviewed fact which disproves anything in the Bible.

People have been trying for thousands of years, and sooner or later, every theory falls apart in the end.

(the writings of Daniel, and the Hittite civilization spring to mind)

I call you out!
And God Himself calls you out in the book of Isaiah!

You simply can't do it.

Also, cudos to Mouth for putting facts in black and white by quoting from the Koran.
If anyone here still thinks that this Islam "religion" is anything but vile and Satanic after reading these quotes from it's holy book...
Please articulate your point.

You and I, and every other person on earth are sinners.
SINNERS!!!
The Bible tells us that we need the shed blood of Jesus to pay for our sins.
He got in trouble for YOUR sins.

When you go to meet your Maker and are judged, YOU will have to pay the penalty for your sins... ONE sin earns you eternal damnation where there will be wailing and gnashing of teeth.

UNLESS you have accepted Jesus as Lord!!
If you simply accept the free gift that He is offering you... that of redemption... HE will pay for your sins.

He will then grant you eternal life with Him in a paradise with no more pain or tears (or sin!)
But ONLY if you accept Him as your Lord and Savior.

I pray that you will take Him up on His offer of redemption.

WHOSOEVER believes in Him shall not perish, but will have eternal life!!!

There is NO other way.
NO OTHER WAY!!!

Don't let some stupid movie (which cites not ONE source) let you spend eternity seperated from God.

I was in your shoes 4 years ago... until Jesus saved me from sin.
I'll never look back, and I'll never deny Him!

I'll be praying for you.

And, as far as war goes...Jesus told us to love, bless and pray for our enemies... nothing else. except turn the other cheek.

One last note...

You say that you "believe in a God".

The trouble is, God tells us that believing in Him isn't enough.

It's turning from our sins, and having faith in Jesus as the redeemer that God wants from us.

Let's remember that Satan himself believes in God!
