Extension to path on bridge opens
An extension of the bike and pedestrian pathway of the Ravenel Bridge from the bridge to Chapel Street officially opened Thursday.
The new concrete lane is 12 feet wide and half a mile long. More than 2,000 feet of new granite curbing was installed, along with additional street lighting.
The new extension provides bikers a safer way of cycling and is a good start on making the city more bicycle-friendly, according to several local cyclists.
"Finally, the bridge is really opening up," said Sterling Hill, a 23-year-old cyclist who commutes regularly by bike to and from work in downtown Charleston.
Mayor Joe Riley, City Council members, and several other backers and members of the biking and running community joined in the opening ceremony in front of the East Bay entrance to the new path. Riley said he recently signed a resolution by the U.S. Conference of Mayors that asks all mayors to commit to help make their city more bicycle-friendly.

Two things about this story surprised me. First, that Joe Riley would sign anything. Second, that the City Council didn't have to hear about this opening from the media outlets in this City.
What gives here? Various members of the Council have complained about poor communication between themselves and the Mayor's office over the Sofa Super Store fire, the resulting investigation, the recommendations for change and then the reports that were so critical of the command structure, training, equipment, etc. But they get notified of a bike trail opening??
Something is rotten somewhere in City Hall.
