East Bay bike-ped path dedication
A dedication ceremony for the opening of the East Bay Street Bicycle-Pedestrian Path will be held at 11 a.m. today at the foot of the East Bay ramp of the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge.
The path is nearing completion and is already being used by cyclists, runners and walkers.
At the ceremony, Charleston Mayor Joe Riley also will be announcing the city's intention to become a nationally recognized Bicycle Friendly Community as designated by the League of American Bicyclists.
Meanwhile, a "drinking fountain plaza" is in the works on the Charleston side that will include a water fountain, benches and a trash bin. One-third of the cost of the plaza, estimated to be about $15,000, is being paid for by a donation by the Charleston Running Club with proceeds from its Charleston Nine run last year. Dixon Hughes accounting firm also is donating toward the project.
