S.C. State elects new board chairman

Monday, June 2, 2008

ORANGEBURG — Lumus Byrd Jr. has been elected chairman of the South Carolina State University Board of Trustees.

Byrd told The Times and Democrat of Orangeburg that he is grateful for the trust his fellow board members have in him. He will serve a two-year term.

The election was held Friday at a special meeting at which trustees discussed candidates to replace Andrew Hugine as university president.

The three finalists to be interviewed by the board next week in Charleston are Johnson Akinleye, associate vice chancellor for academic programs at the University of North Carolina-Wilmington; George Cooper, deputy administrator at the U.S. Agriculture Department; and Juanita Fain, vice president for planning at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas.

The board decided not to renew Hugine's contract last December.
