Green ideas

The Sustainability Institute and Lowcountry Earth Force are seeking applications for the second annual GREENS Fund Award, a competitive grant contest for a high school to implement a campus project dedicated to sustainable and environmental stewardship.

The deadline for submissions is Sept. 26.

Last year, the GREENS Fund awarded $10,000 to James Island Charter High School to install a green wall, a sustainable landscaping technique used to provide passive insulation, naturally cooling the building and reducing energy costs during the spring and summer months. The project also included a rain garden, a recycled glass pathway, gray water capture, a variety of native species plants and a butterfly garden the students use to track monarchs.

This year, the grant is open to all Charleston County high schools. Grant applications must be created entirely by students. The program will grant up to $7,000 for a student-designed project displaying innovation in environmental stewardship and sustainable development.
