East Cooper league holds first championship meet
East Cooper Swim League hosted its inaugural Championship Swim Meet at Park West Recreation Department's indoor pool on July 12.
The league formed in 2007 to encourage swimming in a fun, relaxed and rewarding atmosphere. The summer league fills the gap between developmental and competitive swim teams. All meets are held in Mount Pleasant.
Five teams with almost 400 swimmers comprise the league. Its season is seven weeks.
The teams are: Creekside Crocodiles coached by Clint Patrick; Hamlin Plantation Hammerheads coached by Kelly McDavid; Hobcaw Creek Plantation Dolphins coached by Kathy Poole; Park West Pirates coached by Billy Burke, Katie Gruber and Hailey Cutright;, and Rivertowne Rays, coached by Jenna Rogalski.
Swimmers are ages 4 to 18 and the only qualification is the ability to complete one lap without assistance. During the season, every swimmer competes for awards and contributes to the team score. At the July 12 meet, swimmers ages 7 and up competed for their team.
