— RIDGEVILLE — Firefighters and officials agreed Tuesday to move ahead as quickly as possible with building a new fire station to replace the building a Dorchester County codes inspector closed earlier this month.

Council informally agreed to take out a loan to build a new station as quickly as possible, Mayor James Williams said.

Council will try to work out how much that might cost by the next meeting, he said. Williams also said he believes the town could borrow the money without raising taxes or fees for residents.

Councilman Joseph Peal said he agreed with the need to move quickly.

“We’ll find a place to put a truck on this side of the tracks, even if it means putting up a temporary shed,” he said.

The building inspector condemned the town’s fire station when the town was considering turning it over to the rural fire system, which is supported by extra property taxes. Ridgeville Fire Chief Herbert Cummings is also chief of the rural fire station south of town.
