Water main breaks on peninsula
A broken water main flooded the intersection of Amherst and Drake streets in Charleston about 8:30 p.m. Monday, causing a drop in water pressure for some residents.
By 11:15 p.m., a Charleston Water System crew had shut off the water main and begun work with a backhoe.
Amherst Street resident Arthur Nelson said he was taking a shower when he noticed the water dropped to a trickle. "It wasn't hardly enough to knock the soap off me," Nelson said. When he looked outside, he saw why.
Police blocked off Amherst and Drake streets near the intersection. CWS crews used metal detectors to locate shut-off valves. Water could be seen bubbling up from the street in two places where asphalt was cracked.
Amherst Street resident Joseph Grant said it's not unusual for the location to flood, but it was the first water main break he had seen in 10 years. "It's a mess," he said.
