After more than one full day of freedom, David Earl Evans, David James Speight and Julius Clifton Barfield were nabbed, law enforcement officials said Monday.

Authorities received information about Speight that led to his arrest about 11:15 a.m. Monday in a parking lot near Citadel Mall.

With Speight, 30, was Evans' wife, Catherine Messer Evans, 36, who also was arrested. One of the arresting officers described Speight as "not overly surprised."

David Evans, 39, was captured a few hours later in a North Charleston house, Charleston County Sheriff Al Cannon said. Authorities are interviewing another person found in the Russelldale home, he said.

On Saturday, the men escaped Charleston County Detention Center as they traveled from the main detention center's kitchen, where they worked, to the low-medium security work camp, where they were housed.

Human error is blamed for the escape, Cannon said. The detention center processes more than 25,000 people a year. "You do things day in and day out, you get out of the habit of doing things you were trained to do," he said. "That is critical in a jail situation because you're dealing with people who are sitting there watching you every second."

Cannon said a head count was done later than it should have been, but he declined to give specifics. "Someone else might get an idea based on some aspects of this," he said. It has not been determined if the officers responsible will face punishment, he said.

Evans and Speight were being held on separate second-degree burglary charges and qualified to be housed with low-risk inmates in the 100-bed work camp, Cannon said.

The men now reside in a higher-security part of the jail. Both face up to 10 years for escape. Catherine Messer Evans might face charges of harboring a fugitive, the sheriff said.

Barfield, 35, was arrested about 9 p.m. at Churchill Apartments in Goose Creek after a tip was called in to law enforcement, according to sheriff's Lt. Kevin Whited.

Barfield was considered an escapee because he left the work release facility Saturday. He had been living at the facility since October 2007 on a contempt of court charge that he failed to pay child support.

So Catherine switched from Evans to Speight? Hmmm, that was a lateral move, no upgrade involved.

There is no family tree...It's a family stump...

Um...question....

Why was she (Evans) with Speight???

"With Speight, 30, was Evans' wife, Catherine Messer Evans, 36, who also was arrested. One of the arresting officers described Speight as "not overly surprised.""

*Hears the theme from "Deliverance" playing loud and clear*

Let's leave Catherine alone. She was probably up all night cleaning her kitchen and sprucing up the trailer.
Wondering if the Evans have school age children. At least they will have something to talk about for the What we did on our summer vaction deal. And more importantly,, Can those KIDS READ

Aside from the family stump, don't appear that any of them will win the "Sharp Knife" Award at the family reunion during next prison visitation. They escape jail and one only goes as far as Goose Creek? Dumbazz..

Sorry to say we knew Cathy for a while ... She was in jail on Leeds Ave. when the wife and I left the Charleston area in Aug 07. I guess this is the life Cathy prefers.
