Top of the Second Power Poll
1. The Citadel Football: Are the Southern Conference coaches and media nuts? Did they really pick The Citadel football team to finish all the way down at sixth in the league this season?
2. Sports Radio: Area sports junkies must enjoy having two sports talk radio options in town now.
3. CCAA Swim Meet: Snee Farm put forth another outstanding effort in the pool, winning its 20th straight city meet championship. It seems the only thing Snee Farm needs now is an official nickname!
4. College Basketball: With the Charleston Classic opening CofC's Carolina First Center, it's safe to assume, isn't it, that the Cougars will be playing in the first game ever played in the new arena?
5. Auto Racing: NASCAR driver Jeff Burton's car will sport the likeness of swimming star Michael Phelps on the hood Aug. 3 at Pocono. Just one problem so far: The car suddenly can't stop fishtailing.
6. Summer Olympics: NBC will show 2,900 hours of live coverage from Beijing. Viewers would need about 8 DVRs to record the action and 103 days to watch it all.
7. Brett Favre: Perhaps you're weary of the Brett Favre comeback story and wish he'd just go away, but how many NFL players today could keep you locked on the TV screen more than Favre would?
8. Boxing: Recently retired boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. accused HBO's announcers of racial bias: "They praise white fighters, they praise Hispanic fighters, whatever. But black fighters, they never praise."
9. Golf: Frinton Golf Club in England recently ended its 113-year-old dress code rule that required members to wear knee-length socks with shorts while on the golf course.
10. NBA: Looks like the NBA is about to go from Sonic Boom to Oklahoma City Thunder. Can't wait for the marketing campaign: "Thunder clap — catch it!"
