Woman charged in ditch accident
A woman whose car flipped and landed upside down in a ditch told a Summerville police officer: "I drink too many cigarettes and smoke too many beers."
The woman was charged with driving under the influence July 12 after police arrived at the single-vehicle accident scene. Police were notified by another motorist that a car had overturned about 2:30 a.m. at Hutson Drive and Boone Hill Road. The 31-year-old driver of the car was outside the vehicle when police arrived, but when asked how she got out of the car, she said she could not remember. Police questioned the woman about her whereabouts and possible uses of intoxicants and initiated roadside sobriety tests.
Dog, bike stolen in St. George area
A one-eyed dog was stolen in a St. George area burglary early July 6, according to the Dorchester County Sheriff's Office. A 55-year-old Riley Circle man told deputies he saw a man in his yard between 2 and 3 a.m., and when he got up the next day discovered a red bicycle, valued at $150, and his white pug, which he valued at $700, were gone.
Manager alerted to break-in by bang
A loud bang at 3:54 a.m. July 4 alerted the 32-year-old manager of a Miles Road self-storage business of a break-in. The manager came to the front lobby of the business and was surprised to see a stranger with a mustache standing there. When asked what he was doing there, the stranger left through a glass front door that had been shattered, the Dorchester County Sheriff's Office said. The stranger, who took nothing with him, fled in a white pickup truck. Deputies said the firm's security cameras recorded two men in a white, extended cab Chevrolet pickup stop in front of the business.
Nephew charged with assault
A St. George area man was treated for a pick ax wound, and his nephew was charged with assault after an incident July 3, the Dorchester County Sheriff's Office said.
Deputies who responded to a residence spoke to a 46-year-old man who was holding a cloth against a bleeding wound in his arm. The man had a half-dollar-size gash and reported he was struck with a pick ax after an argument in which the nephew demanded the uncle not talk about his mother.
The man maintained he had not said anything about his nephew's mother.
The 36-year-old man, who left the scene after the assault, returned with his mother and told deputies he struck his uncle with the ax. According to the nephew, his mother was insulted and cursed by his uncle, who then punched and threatened the nephew with a gun. The older man denied the nephew's allegations. Family members present were not cooperative, deputies said.
The man was treated by EMS and Trident Medical Center. The nephew was charged with assault and battery with intent to kill.
These reports were taken from selected incident reports by the Summerville Police Department and the Dorchester County Sheriff's Office.
