Programs, announcements

Sixth Annual First Day Festival: 1-4 p.m. Aug. 17. Join Charleston Mayor Joe Riley for this annual event celebrating the beginning of a new school year. Features educational exhibits, recreation activities, and free food and school supplies (while they last). Therapeutic Recreation: Register for basketball (ongoing), tennis (ongoing), cheerleading (ongoing) and swimming. Call Shelli Davis, therapeutic recreation coordinator, at 769-8284.

Charleston Girls Lacrosse Summer Camp & Tournament: Etiwan Park on Daniel Island. Lacross Camp for Girls: 9 a.m.-3 p.m. July 30-Aug. 1. Cost: $175. Ages 8-18. Brackets: 4th-, 5th- and 6th-graders; 7th- and 8th-graders; 9th- and 10th-graders; 11th- and 12th-graders. Open: collegiate and post-collegiate. Times: 9 a.m.-4 p.m. (different brackets will compete at different times, but the entire tournament will last 9 a.m.-4 p.m.). Call 216-6366.

City Gym Boys & Girls Summer Basketball League: Ages 5-17. Registration forms may be filled out at City Gym (65 Hagood Ave.). $30/child. Call 724-7338 or 724-7340.

Sizzlin' Seniors: The James Island Recreation Complex has an active senior group (ages 55+). The group goes on shopping trips, sightseeing tours and to movies. Bingo Tuesdays and a health Senior Seminar series with Roper Hospital. Call 795-5678 for a schedule.
