Randy Carlson, a member of The Citadel baseball staff for the past three years in a volunteer assistant position, has been promoted to a full-time assistant position while former Bulldogs star Jon Aughey was named volunteer assistant coach.

Carlson will continue to work primarily with the hitters and catchers as he fills the vacancy made by Stuart Lake, who was named head coach at Charleston Southern this week.

"This is a well-deserved opportunity for Randy, who has given this program a tremendous amount during the last three years," Citadel head coach Fred Jordan said. Carlson joined The Citadel program for the 2006 season after spending two seasons as a full-time assistant at his alma mater, Lander University.

Aughey will join The Citadel staff as a volunteer assistant coach starting Aug. 1.

Aughey, a 2005 Citadel graduate, was an All-Southern Conference Tournament pick in 2004, when helped the Bulldogs to the conference tournament title and an NCAA Regional berth. He has recently been an assistant coach at Archbishop McCarthy High in Cooper City, Fla., coaching alongside former major league pitcher Alex Fernandez. Prior to that, he played in the Kansas City Royals minor league system, signing as a free agent in 2005.

Youth baseball

Mount Pleasant's 10U All-Star Team won the Cal Ripken state championship in Inman this week, capping an undefeated run through the 16-team tournament. Peter Brown Jr. pitched a complete game and Ben Dodds knocked in two runs with a two-out single during an 8-5 championship game victory over Aiken.

Logan Rogers and Kep Brown had three hits in the game and Tyler Ackard singled, scored and had an outfield assist.

Coach Tim Sossamon's team beat Anderson, 10-6, in the semis. Jeff Gottesman pitched a complete game and had help from Mikey Clark (3 hits) and Seth White (2 outfield assists).

Mount Pleasant is 9-0 in the postseason and outscored foes 46-4 over its first three tournament games, partly thanks to key hits from Zach Zuber, Jake Sossamon, Bailey Hart, Jeffrey Sapakoff and Eric Bailey.

Next up is the Cal Ripken Southeast Regional in Winterville, N.C. (July 24-29). Mount Pleasant opens against Buckhead, Ga., on Thursday.

Golf

Austin Cody of North Charleston posted his second straight 2-over-par 74 and remained in a tie for second place in the American Junior Golf Association's HP Boys' Junior Championship being played at Arnold Palmer's Bay Hill Club in Orlando, Fla.

Cody, who shot an opening-round 67 for the lead, is two shots behind Christopher Walker of The Woodlands, Texas. Walker is at 3-under 213 heading into today's final round. Also at 215 with Cody is Cameron Peck of Olympia, Wash., who had Thursday's best round, a 3-under 69.

Soccer

Former South Carolina goalkeeper Brad Guzan is joining the U.S. Olympic men's team. He was among the 18 players named to the roster Thursday for the Beijing Games. He was chosen along with keeper Chris Seitz. The picks were announced by USA Soccer and Olympic head coach Peter Nowak.

Guzan played two seasons with the Gamecocks and was selected second overall in the 2005 MLS draft by Chivas USA. He was named the MLS Goalkeeper of the Year in 2007.

The U.S. team starts six days of training in San Jose, Calif., on Sunday.
