Confederate flag flap goes on

The Post and Courier
Friday, July 18, 2008

— Another turn came Friday in the drama over the Confederate flag — an issue that is deeply dividing for South Carolinians — when the commander for the state division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans spoke out.

Randall B. Burbage of Charleston said the division "stands ready to defend our heritage against any and all attacks from any group."

Earlier this week, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People urged for efforts to be intensified for the removal of the flag from the Confederate Soldier Monument on the Statehouse grounds.

Burbage called the NAACP fight against the flag an "insult" to South Carolina men who died in the state during the Civil War. NAACP officials believe the flag represents hatred and has no right to be flown in a "sovereign" position.
