Reception set for new director

Frank Bruno comes to town from positions at libraries in Texas, Utah, Saudi Arabia

Wednesday, July 16, 2008

A reception is planned for Saturday for Frank Bruno, the new director of the Dorchester County Library.

The Friends of the Summerville Library will sponsor the reception, from 1 to 3 p.m., at the library in Summerville.

Bruno, the former director of libraries in Texas and Utah, has 20 years of library experience working in public and academic library management. He is a family man with a wife and eight children, four of whom reside in Summerville.

Last year Bruno worked at Prince Sultan University in Saudi Arabia. He formerly managed two public libraries: Port Arthur Public Library in Texas and Uintah County Library of Vernal, Utah. Before then, Bruno worked at Prairie View A&M University in Texas, San Diego State University's Calexico Campus, Central Methodist College and Brigham Young University.

He earned a masters degree in library and information science from the University of Hawaii and a Ph.D. in Education from Ball State University. At Ball State, he taught high school and college students in the education department.

For more than 10 years, Bruno has been the electronic services editor for the Multicultural Review, a quarterly journal for teachers, professors, librarians, administrators, and anyone else interested in learning about new developments and trends in the field of cultural diversity. Throughout his tenure, he has written columns in professional journals and local newspapers.

Bruno supports library growth and he hopes to gain support from Dorchester County officials to obtain funding for new branches throughout Dorchester County and to upgrade services at the existing locations.

For more information, contact Bruno at 563-9189 or bruno@dcl.lib.sc.us.
