They are afraid they will go to jail?,what did they think would happen,a slap on the wrist. Maybe they thought this was a game , and that just because of their age they would be let off with a warning.
I for one hope they all serve some time in jail,they commited a crime,and should have to pay for it. They were not 9 or 10 years old,they were all in High School,and knew

Please do the right thing! These children do not need to be in prison. My guess is that they have already suffered great consequences as a result of their actions. These children need to get on with their lives. Where does all the hatred come from? Why has this taken so long to move thru the courts? Where do the judging, condeming, high and mighty go when they leave this world?

I personally like the idea of a rehabilitative "boot camp". Ten months (a fair amount of time) being whipped into shape and broken down and rebuilt with strength and character sounds exactly like what these boys need. Any more severe punishment would be overkill. Yes, they committed a very serious crime. But the truth is that these kids can move on to become productive members of society, not young prisoners who rot in a cell on the taxpayers' dime and then when released (in 10 years) will have actually become hardened criminals.

ChasCarolinaGirl and southerngirl45 get the mensa comment awards. First of all why would anyone care what you think about the Solicitor when you spew nothing but vitriol, inaccurate to boot. The rape case was a mistrial and while I am not familiar with the details, I believe the defendant is still being held pending a retrial in the case.

On the case reported above, while we (members of the public) have the luxury of making any comments we choose, the Solicitor actually has a job to do. Inappropriate and poorly timed comments by the Solicitor could affect the outcome of the case and might be considered ethical violations. The Solicitor understands that her job is in the courtroom in this case. I don't know what she will say at sentencing, but I am sure Solicitor Wilson has considered all aspects of the case.

Despite what you think from watching My Cousin Vinny and To Kill a Mockingbird, the Solicitor is NOT the leader of your lynch mob. A tough prosecutor must prosecute based on the facts of each individual case. Things may not be as they appear to you.

If ya do the crime, you should do the time. This sounds like nothing more than a joyride type of thing. It's sad, very sad. I wouldn't go as far as flogging, as has been suggested, but maybe some time behind bars with some REAL criminals would bring a sobering reality to these young men.

Also, you're very lucky to have great kids. I know that good parenting is a factor, but we all know that good parenting does not automatically equal perfect kids. These kids clearly made horrible decisions. I'm sure that they were often overindulged and treated with "kid gloves". That doesn't mean they are awful people -- kids or parents.

I do not believe any of these CHILDREN actually entered the businesses and or had contact with the victims. The two CHILDREN currently serving prison sentences have been held accountable. I usually start my day by hugging each tree in my yard. I do have a good many trees, and one of them is a holly tree (ouch), so it takes some time. Now, I'll be back in a bit, I need to make my rounds hugging all of the cars on my street (in hopes to make them nore fuel efficient and enviro-friendly -- I have to hug the SUVs twice). This job as an elitist sure is demanding, but oh-so-huggy and fun!

I guess you have to ask yourself what kind of person do you want in your community in the long run. Should they be punished, of course they should. Should their lives be ruined, of course not. I hazard a guess that the hangem high crowd doesn't have kids or they have long flown the nest. As a parent of a young man, I've made my thirteen year old son read these articles and all of your comments, he should be aware of who a jury of his peers could be. The whole thing is sad, and I don't see any winners in this at all.

it is not about race and really haven't been. We are just tired of all the crime white and black and brown all the pitty pools and excuses and light sentences given to all. We are tired of reading and listening to the news EVERYDAY about scum that will not work, will not take care of their kids will not learn english will not come into this country legally but want all the benefits and our tax dollars pay the way at the same time we cant get any of this help. We are tired of hearing how good these criminals are and how we should feel sorry for them because they have had it so hard. We are tired of children (innocent ones) being molested and abused and the person that did it gets a year or two but the one that kicks a dog gets 10 years. As a whole I am just tired!!!!!!!!!

This is were I have to part with some of you on this issue. The alpha males in this gang got what they deserve but the rest of these kids don’t need to be punish so harshly. I’m a conservative on most issues and people need to accountable for their actions but hard time and the death sentence for these kids? That’s a bit too much for me.

Our culture is in decline and we should put most of our efforts in strengthening the family, getting rid of the criminals in the political system and put a stop to the garbage that our pop culture in Hollywood is putting out. The cornerstone of liberalism is placing people into compartments. It’s this effort to compartmentalize people into groups and not treat them as individuals that is bothering me on this forum. We pass judgment on people on the merits of the case and on an individual basis. This State sees nothing wrong with throwing youths in adult prisons.

Sooner or later, these youths will be released into society, and let me tell you, they will be influenced by adult child molesters, adult rapists, and so forth.

Now, of course they should be punished. But let me give you all a scenario. I know at least 2 16 year olds who were thrown into adult prisons for minor crimes in this state. They were raped up the butt, and when they were released into society, they had some serious mental issues.
I know them both personally. The punishment of being thrown into an adult prison did not fit the crime.

Do you all remember what it was like to be 16? I do. I was heavily influenced by those around me, and luckily, my friends were not losers who wanted me to keep watch while they robbed someone. However, I did make a lot of mistakes.

These are kids. Let's not forget that.

For several months I've been reading the posts on this web-site. Some of you are very funny! I've been reading people rant and rave over seemingly valid cocerns,non-issues,and whatever they feel is important to them. Some express very liberal views, some very conservative views, as well as views that are tainted with overt hatred and intolerance for other races. Sadly, these seem to elicit the biggest responses. Some seem to want to throw fuel on the flames and seem to want to start a race war, while others tow the line and some seem to wait with baited breath for articles like this to further their beliefs and rhetoric, no matter how skewed or not. This morning, when I read this article,and the comments, I felt compelled to speak up, so I registered.
Greetings to all.
Now, my very first comment: If this crime was their first,then these young men deserve a second chance. I believe, I can undeniably say, that unless Jesus (Lord forgive me) is posting on this web-site, then we all have done something one time or more but just didn't get caught, that was not the smartest thing to do, brightest idea or maybe even something illegal,unsavory,unjust,etc.. that could have had devastating consequences if caught or found out. Therefore, he without sin, cast (throw) the first stone. Secondly, It doesn't matter where they reside or their socio-economic status. They made a dumb decision and I am 100% sure that they are paying for it. these young men, believe it or not, are our future and we as adult have got to ttake a proactive approach on investing in the next generation. this sudden notoriety may have prompted them grow-up and realize that life is precious and should be valued. Maybe this has made them become adamant on pursuing their education and becoming productive citizens.We need not throw them, or any youth away without giving a them a chance to see their mistakes, and hope that they get what they deserve. The 10 month boot camp is sufficient along with restitution, community service and have them visit local schools, including Wando to speak to teens and warn them about their decisions. If you talk to anyone of these teens, I assure you they are very remorseful for what they have done. Lets believe in redemption.

I agree the parents should be held accountable as well. Maybe community service or unpaid bagging at Food Lion. When I was growing up, it wasn't the fear of jail that kept me straight but the fear of disappointing my parents. Parents today, (rich or poor, black or white) just don't make time for their kids. If you are going to have kids you should be responsible for them, then you would make sure you knew who they are with and what they are doing. As far as the teens, I think as mentioned earlier, the Army is a good idea. We need more people in the service. Maybe they could be given the choice of X number years in jail or the same number of years in the Army. This would give them a chance to benefit society as opposed to wasting their lives in jail.

if you understand what i'm saying, what is your problem?
i find no humor in kids having to be on mental medication for the rest of their lives because of what they experienced in adult prisons.

there is a reason why children should not be punished as adults.
the minds of children and teenagers are more vulnerable.
going to an adult prison as a child isn't going to "set them straight" it will scar them forever, and make them more screwed up in the head then when they went in. i speak from what i have seen. now if any of you know any teenagers who went to adult prisons and came out normal, i'd like to hear about it.

If this is the same Judge Young that sentenced the woman that stole all that money from Mt Pleasant and the woman who killed her daughter in the DUI to house arrest , then I would not be surprised if he gives these youths house arrest & probation. I would expect no less from him.

granny, I'm not so sure what they are going to get. They could be made examples of just because of where they live.
People should not be sentenced based on their socio-economic backgrounds. Crime is crime no matter where it happens.
They have left out one of the boys who continues to cause problems for others everywhere he goes. I don't know what the deal is with him, but his butt needs to get one of the harshest sentences, as he continues to get into fights and harrass others.
BTW- not that it matters, but there were 3 black boys involved in this crime. Some people have seemed to overlook this fact.
Also, most of these boys come from middle to lower class backgrounds. Not rich, spoiled brats like many seem to believe.
This is also something that should not affect their sentencing. As I previously stated, crime is crime.
One last note: Look who the judge is on this case. He has a very crappy record.

I'm not saying that these teenagers should not be punished. I'm saying that there is a problem in our state with throwing teenagers in adult prison systems.

Yeah folks, lets run out and buy that book that tells us to spoil the kids put them in timeout do not spank them cause that makes them mad, dumb down the test in school or take them away cause competition makes them mad, give them space so they can think but they forget to tell you that doesn't mean get out of their lives and let them run free, of course let them disrespect all parents and teachers etc cause they need to express themselves otherwise they get mad, we need to make up at least 3 new disorders a year to explain why these kids are the way they are instead of blaming the real problem on oh my the parents and kids. While our legal system is not the best, it is the best that we have been able to come up with thus far. However, one fact seems to remain true, and that is the influence of money when facing criminal charges. There is little doubt in my mind that if these young men were from families that couldn't afford a 'Broad St.' defense and had to rely on the overworked and overwhelmed public defense system they would have already been in jail. I'm not making this a race related issue, because there are underpriveldged white people in the Tri-county area as well.

I called these people 'young men' because that is what they are in fact. They aren't children in the sense that they are emotionally immature and don't know right from wrong. Rather, they all seem to come from good families and I'm sure that the families are embarassed by the actions of thier sons. I'm also sure they were taught right from wrong and the 'values' of society by their family. Unfortunately, these young men made deliberate decisions to act in a certain manner and for that they must face the reality that any other would face in the same situation.

It is true that prison is full of bad people, but these young men the committed crimes of bad people. I do hope for their sake, and that of their family, that they can one day become productive members of society once they have finished their respective prison terms.

Unfortunately, it is highly unlikely that any of these teens will see the walls of a jail cell. Solicitor Wilson feels she has the real culprits of this crime behind bars. Although they too were juveniles at the time of their arrests, they were not given an option of being sentenced under the Youthful Offender Act. I agree in that all defendants had different roles in this plan, however, to put 2 children in jail for 10 years to teach them a lesson and then to slap their cohorts on the wrist is as unjust as it gets.

Judge Young is very respectable and I am sure he will do the right thing.

I am responding to your comment as follows:
"what about the victims, courts, message they are sending to other youths"

The culprits will have to write a letter of apology to each and every one of the victims and read it to them before sentencing. The letter must include:
1. They must apologize for the pain and suffering they caused them.
2. What they think the victims felt when attacked and how their lives are now, as a result of their actions.
3. Why they felt the need to commit this act.
4. How would they feel if it had been their Mom, Dad, Sister, Brother or relative that was in that Food Lion and was the victim.
5. What have they learned from this event.
and finally, the letter must include a step by step detail on how they intend on proceeding with their life.

Next, they will have to pay a monetary figure, as restitution, to the victims for pain and suffering, counseling, lost wages etc...

Also, the culprits would have to make a monetary payment to the courts for expenses.

Again, they would have to visit local schools, including Wando and speak about decision making and choices that could have a detrimental effect on lives of so many, including their own..

I know that I haven't followed this case like many but due to their ages, I would take away their driver's liscence and give them several years of community service. Drug test them and take away alcohol privileges until 25.
If you put these teens in jail, they will harden more.
Leave jail for rapists and child molester or give them the public executions. Rape/torture is often more heinous than quick murders.

Eye_on_you-- where does it say they get boot camp? Boot camp or the military might be good for them. I wouldn't give them access to guns for awhile until they prove to be mature and responsible though

It escapes me as to where these 8 "Wando Wonders" had the time & place to put together what seems to be a very well thought out crime. Plans for 2 actual robbers - 8 look-outs - thought & planning put into this crime down to walkie-talkie communication devices. Perhaps I missed it, but has anyone heard from the parents?

"Lead Culprits" sounds like an oxymoron - it seems each individual in this crime had their designated role - and my opinion would be each should be equally sentenced. If there were no robbers -there wouldn't be any need for look-outs.

The reason for separation of church and state is vividly illustrated by The Mouth. He perverts the word to fit his views. No different from any other zealot or sociopath with an agenda. Romans 13:4 is "bringing down the wrath of God to execute wrath on the wrongdoer" It's the Christian view of justice to the the Romans for persecuting them. Christians know that God will have the final say so. The preceding and following verses are telling followers of Jesus to follow the Roman laws to prevent the ire of the Roman authorities to give the Christians moral authority through the use of non-violent protest. Nowhere in Romans Ch 13 is executing some one for stealing or murder mentioned. Read it in context, not from a fundamentalist point of view. Non-violent protest doesn't do a lot for churches that preach fire and brimstone. It's just not that appealing because it requires some thinking and non-violent protests wouldn't be good for the church coffers either.

The message of Jesus was peace through justice(Love) not the Roman thinking of peace through victory which requires a constant victory(war, death and more war/death) to attain peace. It was a radical thought process for the times. That's my take. Duh Mouth likes death and killing. It's a cycle of peace through victory. You kill one then another, then another. Where does it end? Humans have no mechanism to stop themselves from killing each other to extinction as most animals do. The idea of peace through justice(love) would add that mechanism. Not a bad idea and pretty radical.

Punish the kids but killing is a bit OTT.

The death penalty deters nothing. How many innocents are on death row or have been exonerated by evidence withheld? Yes there are no crooked cops/lawyers and the legal system is just splendidly perfect as long as you have money. Duh Mouth has no problem with a person being executed for stealing a piece of candy then? It's stealing right? Or can your far right wing neo-con fire and brimstone PNAC theology make the tie in?

It is doubtful Perez will receive the statutory maximums. His sentencing was put off indefinitely until a report on his background and post-arrest conduct is done for the sentencing judge.

You crazy evangelical christian extremists really scare me, and you are doing missionary work in the middle east? I heard about you freaks. I think you should just go live in the middle east, where your sense of justice will blend in just fine. Go live in Iran or China, where they have the highest rate of executions in the world. Murder and killing is wrong, and I don't need some loser who wrote a book to tell me that. You cannot justify taking the life of a human being EVER. Even if you think that person is the devil, it is not your place to take the life of another. Perhaps if you carried a life inside of you for nine months and squeezed that 7 or 8 pound life out of your genitals, only to have it nurse off the sweet nectar that your body naturally provides as nurishment for the next year, you might actually appreciate this wonderful gift from God, called life.

If you call yourself a Christian, you will know that Christ taught FORGIVENESS. Do any of you know what Forgiveness is? It's people like you who make people like me really hate Christianity, or any religion at all for that matter. You all take a perfectly good thing that is meant to help people and ruin it.

Scaring kids into doing right is not the way to go. A person should not do the right thing because they are afraid of the consequences. They should do right because they feel it in their heart. Because they get a warm fuzzy feeling when they know they did the right thing. Why does a child cry when he sees an animal hurting? That's called having a heart. I just can't believe the difference in sentences for same crimes. One group goes to jail the other probation.

Don't get me wrong the kids certianly deserve jail time, I just can't believe the one group doesn't get any, and this group does.

Mouth of the South, you make a good arguement against my post. I just think that prison time in an adult facility will cause more damage as the rape statistics are high. I do think they should be in a separate facility...even minimum security where they go home to sleep there but work outside would benefit them more. Taking away privileges from many for crimes should help. We already take away gun and voting rights for felongs, we could take away driving rights and alcohol for a couple years for violent misdeamnors.

Jeff61, anyone has the right to defend their property and I had to pay out 50,000 even though the guy I shot beat up several women in the past. I even asked for a restraining order against him while evicting him and no one came to my help.

Look at the poor elderly woman who was raped and the man gets acquitted. Women are still inferior to men and the double standard still applies that a man can rape/molest a woman and you have to prove it but if a woman shows has topless photos of her and soberly charges what most women give away drunk....she is of low morale character and deserves to die. We are high on the list for criminal domestic violence and juries still have more trouble convicting rapists than leisure activities. Gambling is another activity that should be legalized.
