Charleston police chief working for safer city

The Post and Courier
Saturday, July 12, 2008

Charleston Police Chief Greg Mullen has taken some hits in recent months for a police crackdown on drinking in public. Some folks think the chief is out to strip this thirsty port city of its Southern charm by curtailing tailgating and other forms of outdoor imbibing. It has even been suggested that police have made the drinking issue a top priority and have gone so far as to station undercover officers along the path of art walks to catch people partaking of the vine.

"That's ridiculous," the chief said. Mullen said his primary mission is to keep his city and its citizens safe. Tracking down tipplers is hardly at the top of his to-do list, but it is part of a broader mosaic of initiatives designed to reduce crime and promote safety, he said. He thinks those efforts are working, in large part.

Stop the public drinking, catch speeders going down broad street, and ignore the gang problem. A recipe for success.

Another BS public relations story to help prop up that third rate piece of sh*t who occupies the mayors office.

I can vouch for this first hand. Last night, at 10:30pm, at the intersection of East Bay and Vendue Range, I watched an unmarked car (but with the blue lights in the window) pull to the curb. There were four men inside, all dressed in white polos and jeans. One man got out, and I immediately recognized him has a cop because I had seen him the week prior while I was serving as a juror.

Undercover cops are nothing new, Chief Mullen. Just don't make the mistakes that Greenberg did by having the middle-aged meter-readers show up at frat parties (everybody knew how to spot the Vice Squad).

As with anything one can go too far.
And this outdoor drinking ban is too far!
Tailgating?
Art strolls?
These are Charleston traditions.
Jeez who ever heard of tailgating without some refreshments?

And another thing..the recent BAN on smoking in bars has sent smokers to the sidewalks. Ridiculous.
Why are there not bars that accomodate the smokers as well as the non-smokers? Why can't someone open a big ole' Smoking bar and Tailgating facility for all these displaced persons?
If the city was so gung ho on banning smoking then why didn't they realize people would be lining the sidewalks and parking lot having a smoke with beer in hand?

Just saying it seems government is creeping into our daily lives more and more...........And it started with our recreational and social activites..
Give me a break!
