Pastors join war on crime
Visible police, community leaders are focus of strategy

Wade Spees The Post and Courier
North Charleston police, community and business leaders, clergy and educators met Thursday to work on plans to reduce crime and community relations strategies.
Strategy
Some of the efforts to target violence in North Charleston: --Church leaders are working with the families of homicide victims to try to prevent revenge killings. --Police are meeting monthly with community leaders. --Police are holding roll call at the beginning of some shifts on street corners and in churches. --Police are targeting some areas with saturation patrols. --Police and community leaders are forming basketball and football teams for at-risk youth.
North Charleston police are using a new weapon to combat retaliatory killings — the preacher. Faced with a growing number of homicides in recent years and the daunting realization that many of them are retaliation killings, police and clergy members have teamed up to stop the violence. Now, when there's a homicide, it won't be just the investigation team and victims advocates that show up to talk to the victim's family. Police are bringing in the families' church leaders to talk with them about the consequences of revenge. "We as clergy will come to be peacemakers," said the Rev. Augustus Robinson Jr., senior pastor of Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church on Ashley Phosphate Road. Police Chief Jon Zumalt said he's anxious to see what the effect will be. "We're seeing things differently now," Zumalt said. "This is just a whole different approach." It's just one of the changes police and community leaders together are making to drive straight to the heart of violence in North Charleston. A group of police supervisors, pastors, neighborhood civic club leaders, business people, community activists and more have joined forces to create change. There's about 20 of them in all, and they've been meeting monthly since March. They already have seen progress. First, the meetings have improved communication between police and the community, something that's been a challenge. The Elder James Johnson, community activist, said he used to be one of the department's biggest critics. "No more," Johnson said on Thursday during one of the group's meetings. Now, Johnson is working with police as a member of the group. Police are doing more to reach out to residents. At the start of some shifts, they are holding roll call on street corners and inside churches, where residents can see them and meet them, shake their hands, get to know them. They are targeting the areas known for violence with saturation patrols — one or two officers who do nothing but patrol a particular neighborhood five days a week. They get to know the community and its residents. Police said saturation patrols and community relations are working. They are seeing fewer drug dealers on corners, and it's getting harder to find a crack cocaine dealer in the city. The police and community group is also focusing on the city's youth. They are planning for youth teams coached by police officers and community leaders. The youngsters won't just play games but will get some instruction on how to avoid the pitfalls of crime. They will try to draw parents into the sports activities as well. Johnson said he will invite officers to attend community events so that residents will see that police are engaged and are not going to tolerate violence. "It's about building trust between police and community," Johnson said.

Now your "talking down black people". We are just reaping what has been sown by the welfare state created by the Gov. Follow the Gadsen Green 5's kids thru their teen and young adult years and see how they end up. Girls will be pregnant by 16, 17 if we're lucky and the boys will be in jail or worse dead by 22! And guess what all of them will live in public, paid for by you and me housing! And guess what else they won't think its welfare they actually think the portion THEY pay (about $50 per week) is what the rent cost for a month! They don't even know WE subsidize the rest of their rent!
And God forbid we speak about Jesse Jackson will "want to rip our nuts out"!

Quote: “Police are bringing in the families' church leaders to talk with them about the consequences of revenge.”
I like Chief Zumalt and this is a good plan which could be somewhat expanded. Our Pastors could look at how revenge is fostered by the -- denial of redress -- to victims. Some people are driven to revenge when the justice system turns a deaf ear to them.

LOL tripsa. While your comment is funny, it's a poor representation of agnostics and other such non-believers. While I firmly believe in the separation of church and state, I also believe that church leaders can have a significant influence on their following. Most criminals are, after all, religious and with the majority of them being christian, these christian leaders trying to combat the problem makes sense... :)
Let’s also not forget that long before the ten commandments myth came to be, murder was against good morals and values. Just because the christians adopted good morals and values and want to believe that they were on some piece of stone at one time does not give christians exclusive claim to those good morals and values.

First you know I am a Christian and I try not to push it on anyone, that being said .Do you realize when these Christian criminal (LOL sorry I have to laugh at my own moronic words here) that they always find GOD in prison so the good preacher will step in. I do not know may be off topic on this sorry

Just as I've never heard or read of anyone who claims that Hamurabi invented laws for the Sumerians just because he wrote them down in some clay, I do not remember reading in the Bible or hearing another Christian claim that, the law against murder, for example, was the exclusive law of the Jews. In fact, I imagine all of the Ten Commandments except for the first one were shared globally by many peoples. In any event, the Ten Commandments not only tell us how to live but also show our failures. Churches just as individuals have different ministries based on their composition. Indeed, I know several churches and individuals that regularly beat the streets, streets that I would not hand around without being visibly armed and mentally ready. They talk with whoever will talk with them and help when and where they can. They quietly plod along.

moonpie: I did not understand your post. You are commenting on some of the very real ills of the local lower socio-economic Black communities.
I get that.
However what do you mean by "talking down black people"
And what does your quintessential "Black people are an irresponsible drain upon our society" litany have to do with THIS article about Law Enforcement, Community Leaders and Clergy working together in high-risk neighborhoods?
I would think with your constant complaints about Blacks and Hispanics that you would APPLAUD efforts by those very same people to make a positive difference in the lives of those most directly affected by violence.
I would think you of all people would WANT to support any effort of Blacks and Hispanics to help their own and work with Law Enforcement.
Of course this being a POSITIVE article someone HAD to inject negativity into it and I guess that person should be you.
It would be in keeping with your normal prevailing attitudes regarding this subject.
Far be it for me to expect anything different.

thomas: Perhaps you have a point. This and similar programs and initiatives have been tried before.
However, I see nothing wrong with Law Enforcement and the communities they serve continuig to work together to solve the very societal ills that you and many of us constantly complain about.
If at first you don't succeed...
The alternative is to throw up your hands, turn a blind eye and watch entire neighborhoods implode and see the destruction of generations of an entire ethnic group.
Or perhaps that is the goal. Hmmmmm...

"Okay, God, we are taking you off the shelf for a little while now because we have tried so many other things and nothing else seems to work. You are a last resort, although we know you should be the first. So, here, let me dust you off and you do your magic or whatever it is that you do and fix this mess that we have gotten ourselves into. Now, we are not inviting you into our lives completely, just in this part that we need you in; the part that we deem fit to see you in. Nothing else. So, don't be getting all happy and ecstatic thinking you can come back into our homes, schools, workplaces, and such because that is not the case. We put you where we want you to be and when we are done, it's back on the shelf with you! Okay, God? Thank you!"

this is a great first step , but until the justice system keeps these criminals in jail where they should be, all the preaching, basketball, football playing is just putting a bandaid on the problem, case in point. The "alledged" rapist son of mckinley washington, who was on parole for RAPE, on parole, then due to the stupidity of the courts to not have an electronic monotoring device on this dirtbag too, The 5% or so of these individuals could less about what preachers say or do, while the good people are at the courts and churches, the dirtbags out on parole, awaiting trial, or recently released from the little and big houses of detention are once again, stealing, robbing , etc... get rid of these judges, keep the criminals in jail, let this state adopt a 3 strikes your gone,
Look at the freak show in Atlanta right now, this murdering escapee, caught on tape, admitted killing 4 people is going through a trial, that has already cost over 2 million , cnn reported that over 600 witnesses might testify, this is adsurd, there is no common sense in a case like this!
ok done preaching, let me go play some basketball. have a great weekend everyone.

Where have the pastors been all these years? What has changed so that now they will make a difference? How many of them are rev wright clones, preaching the victim sermon. Nothing will change until that tune goes away. Get up in the morning, go to the mirror, gaze into the eyes, recognize and accept that what you see is what you get. It would almost be worth paying reparations if each receipient would be required to sign a promise (payback for breaking the promise would be deportation to france) to never blame slavery, racism, whitey, cops, etc, etc, for failure to perform in the one country in the world when even the dumbest of the dumb (can you say brittnet spears), the lowest of the low (can you say OJ), the crookedest of the crooked (can you say Kennedy or Clinton), the lamest of the lame (see democrat congress) can make it.

Speaking as a Christian, I hate to say it, but some of the churches out there are CAUSING the crime problem. Too many churches today are simply concerned with how many people they can get in the pews, so everything is watered down. Words like "sin" and "hell" are practically banned in some churches. When that happens, the people in the pews see CHristianity as a ceremonial thing and nothing more. Show up on Sunday, say "I believe", say a few prayers, learn a few verses, sing a few songs and go about your life. Some food for thought. In the first century, people rarely asked "are you a Christian?" They would ask "are you part of The Way?". If preachers preach LIVING the Gospel, THAT will make a difference. There are far too many "christian" hypocrites behind bars.

Yeah, I have a fresh idea to pass along to the police... DO YOUR JOB and patrol the areas that are high in crime. Jeebus can't smack someone on the back of the head and tell them not to be robbing banks and hiding in drainage ditches.
Instead of trying to catch speeders, they should focus on the high crime zones and add more men to patrol. Just a thought. Have men that are ONLY there to patrol. Hire more men to only check for speeders. Separate job duties.
Or, how about teach people how to raise their children.

I see that there are people on this posting that still think Jessie and Al has total representations for the black community. If that the narrow mind thoughts you wont to continue to have, well I wont try to change it.
On July 22nd and 23rd, there will be a documentry thats coming on CNN , you may wont to watch it. This may shine some light on what we think in our community.
What is so confusing for me is the same people that has a dam hissie fit when they read about a crime thats committed in the black community and complain about the black community not doing anything to solve the crime, seems to cry more when its reported that something is being implemented to try to help fight the crimes.
Oh, I am sorry. If all of this stop, you wouldn't have anything in P&C to complain about.

Along with preaching to the congregations to stop retaliation killing they need to tell the people in their communities to abandon the "stop snitchin" policy and cooperate with the police when they come to investigate crimes. That's the only way this nonsense will ever get better. Most of the time someone in the neighborhood saw what happened and/or know who did it, but don't want to get involved, unless they are the ones victimized then they berate the police for not doing anything. The police know when they go to certain areas to investigate a crime they are going to get no cooperation from the residents there. If you don't want to be a part of the solution then you are part of the problem.

girlygirl - I'm with you. No matter what residents try to do to help, the CYNICS come out of the woodwork. They always bring up Jesse Jackson (a person many blacks don't even care for) and what ever else they can pull out of their simple minds. Instead of applauding the police and the clergy for at least trying to make a DENT in crime in Charleston County, they sit back behind their keyboards and throw stones.
There was an article about men in N. Charleston doing foot patrols in their communities to help keep crime down - some people on this board had a problem with that. At least these men are trying to help the community by attempting to make it safe place to live. This sends a valuable lesson to young kids.
My guess is these posters, casting stones are disgruntled, middle aged white men who still have the ways and thinking of the old south ingrained in their simple minds and maybe a few from the North that brought their hateful ways as well.
Chief Zumwalt and Clergy - I and many other residents of Charleston County APPLAUD your efforts.

Why is it when these two bigots come running and sticking their (noses) in where it doesn't belong or at best when they were not even invited , you never hear any black folk stand up and say we can handle this no one invited you or your hating views. And as for the CNN broadcast about black folk , how racist is that, how would it be if it was titled white america, I mean blacks can have black award shows and its legal but whites can not, blacks can have an all city government but whites can not. I have a question. Why do BLACK people have to stand up and say Jesse and Al don't represent me? I have never and will never ask a white person if David Duke or the Grand Wizard represents them? The reason WHY I won't ask a white person that is because I have common sense to know not everyone think or act the same.
Try to get to know me first before looking at the color of my skin or statistics. You might find another reason why you should hate/like me.
It's like kindergarten you were told " no two snowflakes are alike." Why can't PEOPLE use that same type of common knowledge when applying it to people.
The stop snitching policy happened way back in the days when white folks were burning up churches with people inside, beating a black kid so bad no one knew who he was in his casket, bombing churches killing 4 little kids, killing civil right workers and throwing their bodies in a lake. Some of those cases are still open you know. Please stop acting like the no snitch just happened in 2008. Anyone know who killed Emmett Till?
DRP you do know that black people could not go to these award shows like the AMA's, Ms. AMerica pagents, or the Emmy's right because of the color of their skin? The award shows you named were made because of that and is now a tradition. Other ethnic groups have similar practices like that as well...there are hispanic caucas, asian civil right groups, and let's not forget women groups too just to name a few. Shall we get rid of all of those groups as well?

eyfigueroa,
This is an old and tried thing of the past. In fact, it's been tried several times in this State. But our society has been in a decaying state of moral rot for years. With each generation it just gets worst. And it has gotten worst with all races. No need sugar coating anything, but divorce and single parent households do contribute to crime rates and bad attitudes. Especially when the single parent themselves has one.
You should read some of the family court cases. Anyone can go down to the clerks office and flip through case files; if they are not Ordered sealed. Some include letters and affidavits that give more insight into whacked out parents. Many easily use their children as pawns and weapons against the other parent. That is not love. It is possession. I have seen my share of parents who shed crocodile tears. I have listened to enough stories to write a book. Then you have these attorneys who milk a case, and will lie to win.
Governor Sanford knows. He knows the names of many attorneys who are unethical. I hope McCain picks him as his running mate.
