1 dead, 1 wounded in unrelated shootings

The Post and Courier
Friday, July 11, 2008

One person is dead and another seriously wounded after two unrelated shootings Thursday in North Charleston.

About 3:15 p.m., officers were called to the 4600 block of West Montague Avenue and found a man lying in the road with a gunshot wound to the stomach, said Spencer Pryor, police public information officer.

Arthur Murray of North Charleston was pronounced dead at 4:38 p.m. at Medical University Hospital, said Charleston County Deputy Coroner Dottie Lindsay. It was Murray's 19th birthday, she said.

Witnesses described a vehicle involved in the shooting as a black Chevy Tahoe with South Carolina license plate 809XTW, Pryor said. There were no arrests in the case late Thursday.

There was another shooting at a busy shopping mall near West Montague Avenue, Pryor said.

About 7:30 p.m., Derrick Lee Williams, 34, of Ridgeville, was shot in the parking lot of The Shoppes at Centre Pointe on Centre Pointe Drive. He was treated at Medical University Hospital and released, Pryor said.

"I was really surprised that it happened at this time of night, when it's so busy," said Jacob Lutz, manager of the Cici's Pizza shop in the center.

Pryor said police had no suspect late Thursday in that shooting.

Talk about the 100 deadly days of summer...

My condolences and prayers to the family of the deceased and I hope the injured victim makes a speedy recovery.

This is simply out of control. There is no safe place in that area. I'm glad I don't live there or have children in that area. It's beyond normal. Too many ignorant low life's condensed into one area.

It's sad that the shooting itself didn't surprise him, just the time of day. Many what does that say about crime in that area?
