2 moms quit fight to stay at complex

The Post and Courier

Jacqueline Clinton holds the eviction notice she received from the Charleston Housing Authority at her Gadsden Green apartment. She is one of five mothers whose sons were charged in two armed robberies near the College of Charleston last year.

Two single mothers facing eviction from public housing because of criminal charges filed against their teenage children have given up their fight to stay in their apartments.

Rather than face a court hearing that might have exposed their children to more publicity, the two are voluntarily moving out of Charleston's Gadsden Green.

The women were scheduled to appear in magistrate's court this week to fight the city's eviction order.

One of the women will be gone from her apartment in mid-August, and the other about two weeks afterward, said their attorney, John F. "Skip" Martin.

The women did not want to subject their families to the spectacle of a hearing, which likely would have meant some of their children would have to testify, Martin said. "They want to put this behind them."

Martin represents Jacqueline Clinton and Elizabeth Speed, whose children were among six teens charged in two armed robbery incidents last fall near the College of Charleston. After the charges were filed, the Charleston Housing Authority moved to evict the women, along with three other single mothers whose children were also named in the complaint. Federal regulations allow the authority to pursue evictions for entire households for detrimental behavior either on or off housing authority property.

The other eviction cases were resolved earlier. One of the women was allowed to stay while the others left.

The eviction case may be over, but not fully resolved is one of the critical questions of the housing authority's leases, Martin said. It centers on phrasing that allows evictions if a tenant permits someone to engage in illegal behavior. The women say they did not "permit" their children to engage in criminal activity.

Housing Authority Director Don Cameron said he believes the agency was on firm legal ground in pursuing the evictions but added there was a lesson to be learned in finding better ways to approach similar cases should they arise.

In October, six juveniles aged 14 to 16 were accused of confronting two people in separate incidents near the college. One victim was shot in the hand with a pellet gun. The six youths involved were on bicycles, police said.

The teens entered pleas or were found guilty of various charges, depending on the level of their involvement, Martin said. Some were returned to their parents, others were sent to group homes and received counseling, and some were sent to the custody of the Department of Juvenile Justice, Martin said.

As many as 25 children between all the mothers were affected by the evictions.

Gadsden Green is a complex of apartment buildings near the Crosstown Expressway in Charleston and is one of several public housing sites in the city.

This is the reason anyone who pays taxes should be able to claim married and 9 on their taxes and still break even.also when my family goes to the doctor and we wait behind a medicaid i think we should go first. i mean im paying for both visits one through taxes and my own that i pay for.so therefore i believe i should get twice the service.HAPPY NOW thomas.......

what in the hell does your taxes have to do with the fact that those mothers are suffering because of there irresponsible kids?
living in the projects has nothing to do with it. my 19 year old son lived with my father in a nice area of hanahan, and when my troubled teen got out of jail 2 months ago the landlord told my father he was evicted because my son was staying there. so trouble and bad choices does not know race.. only racists do..and god knows none of you ever did some stupid or illegal stuff and just never got caught right?
bottom line, you can raise your kids perfectly and they can still trn out bad, its called free will and peer pressure. the moms should be able to stay just not the teens, thats what my fathers landlord did

trod1 and tammirenae I agree with some of both your post. But here is the underlying problem that everyone skirts around "As many as 25 children between all the mothers were affected by the evictions."
25 CHILDREN, BETWEEN 5 UN WED MOTHERS? Your right poverty knows no color but when 7 out of 10 black women have illegitimate children then they almost gurantee they will grow up poor.
If thats racist then who's the racist? That's a fact no one can argue, not even always first "Thomas"!

The bottom line to all this is that irresponsible people breed irresponsible children. The parents are irresponsible which is proven by the fact that all these mothers have made it their lifes work to be human sperm banks. Now they've created a generation of criminals.

Posted by proud2bme on July 10, 2008 at 6:35 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Glad to see the Housing Authority stood their ground.
Any bad publicity/attention these kids received was a direct result of their behavior and their mothers trying to place all the blame on them and not taking any responsibility for the behaviors that landed them all in this situation.

I said this in the last story. Anyone who takes welfare, medicaid food stamps and such should have to do some kind of work and not sponge off of hardworking people. Force them to. Round them up and make them go to work camps X days a month if they do not have a job. Before all of the comments about my comment: This is voluntary, they voluntarily took the money and do not work.

The eviction date is long past. Put them on the street today. Let friends and family help them out. That's they way it should have been all along.

Uh oh...

Here comes the Kompassionate Kristian Konservatives(KKK)of Charleston. They could care less about the innocent children who will be homeless because of others actions.

These self righteous racist asses get a kick out of knocking someone down who is already struggling to survive.

He who casts the first stone...... yeah right.

Funny how they will posture, whine and fight for these kids to be born and so easily condemn them to a life of hardship and danger and homelessness to punish the mothers once they are born.

Bunch of racist hypocrites!!

I agree with Fiscal that they should do some kind of work. Some will say that they are not able to work, but if they can work their ass to have more kids, then they can work their ass and do some kind of work. They also need to find out who the baby's daddy is ,so he can pay. I for one am tired of tax money going to these low life, baby making machines.

So, those well-to-do families from Mt. Pleasant who kids committed those robberies, were their mothers a sperm bank also? Samething applies here.

All you people in the so call low country make me sick, these are people, not machines or animals like some suggest. Yes, these females should be working and they did have a lot kids, but not all have the skills to make the money to live in a gated and well secure community. I would like to know what kind of jobs all of you have and the education levels? This is suppose to be the bible state, what happen to the teachings of Jesus Christ? tammirenae, your father probably did not sign a lease stating that if anyone in the household got in trouble with the law, everyone would be evicted. These ladies (and I use that term lightly) did.

Gadsden, johnq never posts anything worth responding too. He's pretty much a troll. It's best just to skip the entire post when you see his name.

madd_dogg, animals reproduce with no regard to those around them, BUT, even animals dont reproduce and expect another group of animals to care for their young. you brought the word animal into this....just saying.

maybe the ability to support a child prior to engaging in the act of sex should be considered. This would help in many other ways for many different people.

the sperm donors are the real scabs.

Just a quick note. As a former resident of Charleston AFB I can tell you that a similar thing happened there. A step child of a member was caught shoplifting on base and they were told that he could not reside on the base anymore. From my knowledge he moved in with his other parent. If this had not been an option the whole family could have been moved off base. Seems to me that there could be some improvement in the wording of the lease but I believe that you must be responsible for your child. I know that if my 17 year old did something so dumb he would be moving out of my house. If my 14 year old did this there would be sever consequences at home as well as what the law dished out. That is why I know to the best of my abilities who, what, when and where when it comes to my children.

madd_dog2020, this is only the bible state in your head. As far as I can tell, your jesus only lives in your head too. What any of that has to do with this article is beyond me.

The bottom line is that these women have been living irresponsibly their entire adult lives. We're tired of supporting them. THEY made the bad decisions that put them where they are... not us. They most likely dropped out of school; no one made them do that. It sounds like they spread their legs for any man that said hello; no one made them do that. They obviously paid no attention to what their children were doing, or who they were doing it with, no one made them do (or not do) that.

This has nothing to do with race or money. I know MANY poor people, of all races, that are great citizens. They may not drive flashy cars or live in big houses, but they earn their keep and live responsibly. These women have chosen not to do so. We should not have to support them. As for their kids... the youngest ones that aren't committing crimes (yet) are caught in the middle. Still, I say, their friends and families should be taking care of them. Not me.

Hey maddog - the slavemasters are the ones holding by your fears of losing gubment handouts. The slavmasters are the ones giving you just enough to keep you from running off of the plantations. The slavemasters want to keep you on welfare for the rest of your life so they control your fate. The slavemasters need your vote and hold you by your fears, they don't want your to be a free thinker who makes his own destinty.

The slavemasters want to "cut off anyone's nuts" who tries and uplift the poor community to do things for themselves and be responsible citizens with tough love like Barack did.

Believe me, I am not on any kind of handout. I believe in the tough love statement that Obama made; holding the blackman responsible for the families they create. I came from one of those homes, but did not let it hold me back; plus it taught me what not to do when I became a father. I just believe in humanity and giving a helping hand.

So - there are many problems here...but I'd like to point out one good thing...the mothers are not pursuing it - to protect their family - the innocent children in the house (the ones that didn't commit the crime) will now be protected from having to go to court and testify, and they may actually benefit from the fact that their mothers are finally doing the right thing.

Yes, the housing authority had the right to evict them based on the lease the women signed....and yes, the situation is pretty crappy for the innocent children involved...

I'd also like to question this comment - "Here comes the Kompassionate Kristian Konservatives(KKK)of Charleston. They could care less about the innocent children who will be homeless because of others actions." ...Fine - let them come live with you...since you are so compassionate...

Good riddens. If the people of this country would stand together maybe we could eliminate the welfare chaos/corruption and use the money paying for these animals to be kept for education for the kids and parents who play by the rules. Uneducated people will always choose the path of least resistance rather than work for the good of the people.

madd_dogg, I stand by what I said. I worked from the age 16 until I retired, some were low paying jobs, some were not.

I do not live in a gated community. I have one child, and never had a welfare handout. When me and my husband first started out we had to have some help when our child was borned, but it was FAMILY that helped out. I'm sure that if I had decided to open my legs to every dude that came along I would have had more kids, and been on welfare, but I chose to have what I could afford. That is what these women should do (only have what you can afford.)

Mad dogg, I don't think anyone is saying they should be "forced" into a work camp, that would be terrible. They simply would not be eligible for welfare or public housing unless they did work.

Very simple actually, either you are a contributing member of society or you are not.

It seems to me after months of whining and crying, that when they knew the time was at hand, they wrangled 6 to 8 weeks more out of the housing authority.

What a racket!

As for the 6 armed robbery suspects, I hope they get at least 10 years.

Whether these ladies were black, white, purple, paisley; it doesn't matter. The Housing Authority has rules that all tenants must abide by. You break them, you leave. These ladies' kids broke the rules, now the mothers have to deal with the consequences. I am not going to sit here and go back and forth with the race issue (although I probably could, but for what?), it's not that serious to me.

The real victims in this case are the C of C students that got robbed / life threatened by the family members.

Why don't we ask them after they had a gun stuck in their face if it's okay for the families to stay in free housing?

The students are trying to improve their lives not throw them away by commiting crimes.

The mothers should've made sure their kids were in at night getting a good night sleep and trying to make something of their future. It's called responsibility...

madd_dog2020-

Many of the posters here are retired military who have socialized health care and shop for socialized food on the base too.

They have to stay in the area so the government can continue to care for them, which I can understand, they have served and deserve what they receive.

The other posters here are just racist trolls who have to "come out of the closet" in an anonymous forum as they don't have the balls to say the same thing to someones face. They sort of feed on each other and egg each other on.
These are the same ignorant voters who get their info from Fox news and Limbaugh etc. They only know what they have been spoon fed from these idiots and can't form an opinion on their own. You can tell when they have run out of republitard talking points when they start to use personal attacks instead of reasoned conversation.

I think what really bothers them is the FACT that they will soon be ruled by a BLACK man!! I can't wait to hear the gnashing of teeth when Obama becomes president. These whack jobs here will be going CRAZY!! WOO HOO! I can't wait1

I have no real defense for us Christians. We did not become Christians because we were perfect. And, we still are not perfect but should continue to try. Also, I do agree that local churches should try to intercede if these families are willing. Churches may already have tried, I do not know. Churches can relieve some suffering and help people get on their feet. Not even God will strive with man forever. Mistakes and poor decisions can always be forgiven, but mistakes and poor decisions always have consequences. We Christians can be hypocritical sometimes and many other bad things too. As one who is not perfect, I have to wonder why you lash out so against the Christians when you, Madd and John, do not take these people in yourselves and provide all of their needs with no end in sight. It's tough for everyone to live in the world.

What does Obama's race have to do with anything? I really can't stand that people are voting based on race, that's called discrimination.

Also, yes military people live on base and get benefits. They also WORKED to earn those benefits. You don't get them unless you've served with the armed forced.

And seriously, don't try and say that welfare and so many kids is a noble thing. I've been putting myself through college by working over the summers full time, taking jobs on campus, taking out loans that *I* have to pay off (not my parents) and just anything else I can do to make sure my tuition is taken care of. I worked hard in high school to earn scholarships, and work hard in college to make sure I keep those scholarships. All of this is so I can eventually provide a good life for myself and a family in the future. I practice safe sex (in monogamous relationships only!) to make sure I don't throw my life away by getting pregnant. Everything I do is so make sure I work toward what I want in the future.

Now someone tell me why I should like having my hard earned money taken away from me for people that are so irresponsible, they can't even use a condom?
I don't mind giving it away, voluntarily. But don't TAKE it from me.

These women were tennants and signed a lease. I'm sure they were made aware of the rules. The rules were broken, so get out. Plain and simple. And no one will address the fact that there were 25 illigetimate children born to these few women by multiple men, I'm sure. It's my OPINION that if these women knew that they had to work to suppport all those children, maybe they wouldn't be so quick to have unprotected sex with anything that moves. But they know that the gubment will continue giving them access the housing and groceries and medical benefits which MY tax dollars pay for. And please note that I did not make any mention of the color of these women.

WHERE IS SHARPTON?

This is a simple case, whether you permit you children to participate in illegal activity or not, you are still responsible for their actions until they are legal adults. I guess a little supervision, parenting, or simple chores that I used to perform would have helped in limiting their time spent robbing kids with a pellet gun. Also, anyone wonder how a bunch of 14-16 yr olds got a pellet gun downtown and to CofC in the first place?

Also, in response to the idiot about the kids in MTP who robbed people with a pellet gun. They are serving ten years in prison. Seems to me that these kids got off easy, maybe living in Mt. P doesn't have the advantages of the projects. Just a devil's advocate question.

I just find it so funny that this is even a question. I certainly have compassion for them, and I hope they land on their feet. However, you have to be the controller of your decisions. Whether it be your "direct" responsibility or not. You still have to control your children, and they were not controlled. I am sorry, but life has consequences. If we keep forgiving them, we won't have any reason to follow the law and the rules.

There are no exceptions.

BLAH BLAH BLAH !i was giving thomas some of what he asked for notice race was never a part of my post.birth control should be a requirement for welfare as well as drug tests i have to have a random drug test to get paid so should anyone on welfare.if you dont pass no check kids get removed from you period.if you cant feed what you have you have no business having anymore.so your father had rules to his place and the welfare section8 mothers had the same rules at least its consistent. just for the record we were on welfare for one year we worked to get off of it and did.and haven't looked back.so could many people on welfare if they chose to do so instead of making these places baby manufacturing plants.

Juvenile Justice System vs. 10 yrs in adult prison? Sounds like the "children" got off light??? A pellet gun is a pellet gun. A robbery is a robbery. Gee, I wonder why the Gadsden boys got off with the Juvenile Justice System and the Mt P boys got 10 yrs in prison????

I had a sister in-law who God rest her soul worked from the time she was 16 until she retired at 65 for Shoney’s no less.
Moreover, she use to tell the girls that worked there, who were still getting government help, "she was tired of paying for their F**king, with her tax dollars" she passed way 1 year after retiring. Loved that woman. However, she did make sense

As well if you wont get a job and are on welfare{non disabled}you should be picking up trash or something on the side of the highway cutting the grass ect.welfare needs to go back to the old days when they use to give you x amount of rice beens ect for a month in a few bags.so you had nutrition and food nothing else .no selling food stamps or what you bought with them.make it unappealing as a lifestyle for people .

"Also, in response to the idiot about the kids in MTP who robbed people with a pellet gun. They are serving ten years in prison. Seems to me that these kids got off easy, maybe living in Mt. P doesn't have the advantages of the projects. Just a devil's advocate question."
I have asked this same question all along. Where is the fairness here? Sean Shevlino was only 16 at the time of the crime, and he is serving a 10yr.sentence in an adult facility. Why do the 16 yr.olds involved here get no worse than juvenile detention? They shot someone in the hand, and no one was injured in the Mt.P. incident. Is crime not crime, no matter where it is committed?
Why are there no groups yelling foul on the preferential treatment that these boys apparently received?

I was in wal-mart the other day and the people in front of me used an EBT card for most of their purchase. I'm ok with helping out.

What I'm not ok with is the fact that they used that card and both people had a Bluetooth headset on. WTF??? That's what's wrong with the welfare system--no accountability!!

I agree, they should go. They knew the rules. They were probably very young, and a "victim" of the welfare system when they had these teens.
To make a statement. I am also a single mother. I also am using assistance. but becasue it is Needed..key word there. And dare not have another child if I feel like I NEED assistance. I also Work full-time in a respectful Job. And pay 160 weekly in daycare. Medicaid tried giving me a hard time, and made me feel that I cannot qualify for assistance, because of this.. that is where the system is corrupt..but if I were a black woman with 5 kids and a part-time job, with 5 different "baby daddies", I wouldnt be hasseled. What a rip..

tripsa,
How did I know you would be the first one to mention Jessie Jackson statement.

Let me say this. Don't be mistaken that Jessie won't pay for what he has said in the black community. As I have stated in these posting, Jessie and Al "DO NOT" represent the majority of black people. With this stupid statement he made, it will pushed him further away from the educated blacks.

You don't listen to our radio stations, so you don't know what we are saying about it. Of course, the white radio stations and the tv stations, are not going to report what is being said in the black community about Jessie statement.

You all don't seem to understand, we don't listen to Jessie either.

Now that we have someone thats willing to attack this problem, we have idiots like Jessie who are afraid that he will insult blacks by bring up the truth. That shows you who is out of touch with our community.

Back to the story at hand. Yes, these woman has 25 kids between 5 woman, but show me proof that there was 25 different daddies.

Some of you can state policies that have pass, but you hate Clinton so much that you don't know about the welfare reform plan that he put in place.

Those woman do have to work. Read up and then you can make your comments.

I agree the rules where broken, and they should have moved, but there should have been given time to find a new place to live. Thirty days to find a place is not enough time.

My comment will be on the lightness of these boys' sentences. I mean come on. Why should they get to spend their time in group homes and kiddie jail while the kids from Mt. P have to tango with the big boys. Now, I will say that is totally unfair and lopsided. These boys should have been dealt the same fate as the Mt. P boys!

flame,

I am a black woman with 6 kids and they can't get Medicaid. I am being hassled. Who can I blame?

Posted by dogwoodroad on July 10, 2008 at 9:30 a.m. (Suggest removal)

The discussion on welfare is always interesting...the system needs a COMPLETE overhaul, which I am sure is a commonly held opinion...

I happen to know a white woman with a toddler, who refused to tell anyone who the father of her child was until her social worker recommended that she notify him of the child's existence. The purpose was for her to have the father (who did not know he had a child) relinquish rights to the child, avoid child support from the father, and therefore qualify for more welfare dollars. By the way...she lives for free with her mom in a new marshfront home in Mt P. Not too shabby...

So, when I have a poor opinion of the welfare system, and Medicaid, perhaps you can understand why...it is NOT a black/white thing. It is a question of people taking responsibility for their own actions.

I have just listened to an hour of presentations in class on government agencies pertaining to health and welfare. The financial burden that we, as taxpayers, are carrying due to government waste and lack of individual responsibility is going to drive this country deeper and deeper in debt.

Im am sorry to hear that, if it is really needed. I guess we have to blame the ones abusing the system. Its sad that people that are actually working hard, and putting into the system can't get the help when it is needed.

Flame, I understand exactly where your coming from. I am a single mother of 3 children. Their father left as I went through a depression after having my 3rd child. I work very very hard. He is on child support but does not pay. Not only do I not qualify for assistance but the child support system doesn't care about him not paying. I am living from paycheck to paycheck, but I am making it. As I sat in the office waiting to see if I qualified, I saw many women, single women, with many children come in and out, these women did not have jobs, had many children and looked as if they didn't care or want to succeed. But yet, they all qualified for foodstamps. One woman I sat next to said she got 600.00 a month in foodstamps. I thought for sure I would qualify for something. I am in school, working full time, and taking care of my 3 children. But I didn't qualify for foodstamps or any other assistance because they said I make too much money. The children qualify for medicaid, but I have to pay monthly on the program they qualified for. I feel like if you are using assistance, you need to abide by the rules. I am working hard for what I have. And I don't get anything on credit because I know I won't be able to pay it back. So kudo's to Nikki and Flame for working.

I do not believe that the Gasden Green mothers are any less moral than others, that they love their children less, or that they choose to be less responsible than any other ethnic groups. I do not excuse the behavior of their children, and I feel that the children should receive the appropriate punishment for the crimes that they committed. However, it saddens me to read on a constant basis some of the comments that are usually posted about low income single families period. Any one who is a parent whether you are a single parent or have two parents in the home knows that you can teach your children morals and the difference between right and wrong and the child can still choose to go down the wrong path. I also believe that the welfare system is flawed and needs to be changed, but as we all know change doesn't happen over night. It is only by the grace of God that I am not one of the Gadsden Green Mothers. I am a single parent of two young boys and I will be the first to say that it is not easy raising children by myself. I was determined to be the best mom I could be both spiritually and financially to my children. I did this by trusting GOD to provide for me and my family during the good and the bad times. I also worked two jobs and attended college during the evenings, so I wouldn't be stuck in a low paying job. I will also admit that I received help from some of the same government programs that many posters feel should be terminated. I never woke up one morning and said "Today is the day that I will apply for Section 8 and Food Stamps and live in subsidized housing. I used these programs as stepping stones to continue my education along with personal sacrifice and saving my money so that I could become self sufficient. I hope that my comment will make some posters think twice before they make general assumptions and lump a group of people in to one category.

It's time for a little conservative education (you yellow-back liberal slug). I do not receive "socialized medical care". I pay a hefty price for my medical benefit (notice I said "benefit" not "subsidy". Second, I do not shop at the base commissary, because I think the prices are too high and selection very limited.

Why won't you take your sorry ass to a recruiter and do something worth commenting on?

And, unlike you, I acknowledge your right to speak freely (especially if I disagree with you), but a comparison of military "benefit" to welfare "subsidy" goes over the top!

And yes, I WILL back-up my comments in person. Just send an e-mail and name the place and time.

winter23- it sounds like you have a very strong head on your shoulders.

I think there is nothing wrong with receiving assistance when needed. However, I do feel that it should be a temporary thing. Unfortunately for many, it is a lifestyle. I have known of a few people who have told me that it's much nicer for them to be able so stay at home and collect welfare than to go out and get a job. Their attitude is, "why should I go out and work, when I can do just as well staying home all day." This is not my opinion, but a fact. That is exactly what one woman told me when she came to pick her children up from school. And she was proud of that!! That's the mentallity I have a problem with.

As for Thomas' previous post. I just skipped over it. If it was something worthwhile, which I highly doubt, maybe someone can paraphrase it for me.

I'm with Lucy on this one, there is nothing wrong with government assistance...if you absolutely need it. It does disgust me when I hear some people just glorifying that fact that they get Medicaid and the Eat Better Today card "cause they can". WTH? I work everyday and between gas, groceries, my personal bills, household bills, prenatal care, buying books and supplies for school, and keeping up with a house and I can't get sh*t! That mentality pisses me off too. But I digress.

Some of you need to find a constructive outlet for your bitterness and anger. Many of you just don't sound emotionally well with the world, maybe a 12 step program. Those are not just for folks with addiction problems to tangible substances.
Situations like the one in this article are often primarily a socioeconomic issue in most cases in my OPINION. We are all in this together whether you like that idea or not. Only racist, in my OPINION, see this as solely a race issue de-humanizing those involved to justify their lack of simple empathy for their fellow human being and thus exonerating themselves from any not necessarily tangible philanthropic long term solutions. Proverbial example; give a person a fish, they for the moment have a belly full, teach them to fish and they become self sufficient.
You know these trouble youth, from this experience will in all likelihood cement themselves in their current ways/culture in the face of another society/culture that is quick to point out the youth's problems but absolute in a void of dignified solutions to allow them to join your world. Something racist in their heart of hearts are sickened by that thought.

Were you anxious to see how well you could negotiate your way around the mothers and the 19 kids not involved in the armed robbery as they slept on the sidewalk?

Wishful thinking?...

Gadsden and Jeff:

Where does it say these women made children with several different men? Also where does it say that these women have made a habit of living off the system? For all we know they could actually be using it as a "stepping stone" as well. Not saying that this is necessarily the case, just saying, we can't jump to such conclusions being that none of us know them.

A lot of you make these women out to be "loose" at best. Again, I'm not saying that this isn't a possibility, but none of us know this.

Granny- I've read many of your posts and agreed with you on most, but I must say I'm dissappointed that you jump on this bandwagon and degrade these women as laying down with any man.

I don't really agree with the system for the simple fact that judging by the posts on here, the people that most need it and that are trying to do better, aren't able to receive this help. I think it forces the thinking that it's better to not work and receive assistance than it is to work and not be able to afford to eat.

When you made the statement"It doesn't take a valedictorian from Harvard to understand that having multiple babies with multiple fathers and wanting some one else to take care of your self and your crotch fruit is wrong that's common sense" is when your comment became a problem for me. You and I are both posters on a forum and none of us know the Gadsden Green mothers personally. We both are getting our information from a second source. I am an OBAMA supporter, but I disagree with Obama and you when you both assume that black men are misguided, uneducated, or in need of guidance on becoming men and raising their kids. I have a problem with that because I know men who are single fathers and are taking care of their children because it is the moral and right thing to do and not because of an court order. We both know that there are men in this world of all races who are deadbeat dads and to lump one group of people no matter what their color is into one category is unfair. I read your previous comments and found valid points in your posts but I just disagreed with that portion of your comment.

somebody is laying down too much with somebody. Three of us were raised by a single mom (divorced) who worked her butt off to support us and taught us respect, manners and good behavior. Single mothers choose to be single - 25 kids to 5 moms shows total lack of respect for themselves, much less their kids. The Kids have fathers who decided to be only sperm donors. The moms should be sterilized and put to work. The kids should be held responsible for their own actions after age 17 (per the law) and the others trained to behave like humans, not animals. I don't care what race they are - if you act like an animal, there's no excuse. I, too, am now a single mom (divorced) with a young teen son who knows right from wrong, works hard at school, and obeys the rules. I work hard, own my own home, and don't spread it around town indescriminately. Believe me, it can be done. Enough excuses for these people. These women need to get off their backs and get a J O B!

We have to make some major changes in the welfare system. Cases like this are not at all uncommon and chances are these children will end up on the same path as that of their parents. All that's happening here is a continual cycle of poverty, crime and the inability of people to care for themselves.

I would set down a few requirements of anyone who draws public assistance to get by. The first rule is that they have to be working. The level of benefits they recieve is going to be based upon their income. Even if all they can find is a minimum wage job, it's better to have people working than doing nothing. If they are unable to find employment, then they must actively be seeking employment.

The second rule is that they have to use contraception as a condition of recieving assistance. This rule should apply for men as well as women. We are not a heartless society and it would be wrong to penalize the children for the irresponsibility on the part of the parents. We wil help people with the existing children they have brought into the world, but we will not support additional children. This is exactly how it is done in many other nations.

For the record I think that the housing authority is correct in evicting these people, particularly if the children who got into trouble are still living there. They should not be permitted to reside there and continue to terrorize the neighborhood and the other residents. There are many who live in housing projects because they have no choice and they deserve to at least live in a place that is safe. The housing authority is doing this to try and make the place safer for the other residents.

jennirick - While I myself have not made that comment, I must say - You have to be kidding, right? Do you think for a minute that is not the case. I would gladly wager you $1,000 that between the five moms and 25 kids there are likely ten dads (conservatively). HOWEVER, there will be no wager, because the Hanahan SWAT team would sweep in an shut down the illegal gambling.

Have you seen the TV dishes and incoming Comcast wires at the projects? How you pay for nice cars, private attornies, and digital TV, BUT get free housing. That is BS. Comcast should be forbidden from hooking up cable at anyone free government housing.

how the heck is Obama going to attack this problem? Cut off the members of the entire male black population! I cannot believe people see this fool as some kind of Messiah - 2 years in Congress and now he's ready to rule the world? No wonder the black population is so lost...

gamecockwoman - There are a lot of stupid white people planning to vote for him too. It will be because of the white vote and the misguided 20's vote that will cause this idiot to win. I almost want to see it happen. It is like watching a car wreck. He will melt down in the first year and start crying racism.

Perspective:

I said in my comment that this could be the case. However, don't you think it's possible that even one of these women has children by the same man? I mean, it does happen, right? Obviously some of the posters on here are in the same situation and using the system too. So I guess that means it could happen and out of respect to the possibility, I don't think they should be degraded like that.

Ok where do these upstanding citizens go next, which city will get stuck with them, which section 8 apt community will take them in for free tax dollars hey I know Summerville has a nice spot for them right across the street of the high school. I mean who's commnunity will be safer when these little angelscum kids come to town, we know they can steal and shoot guns. I think this fine newspaper needs to follow these family and 25 kids and report where they end up so we can all get ready to be shot or robbed, and the cops should know where they are at so they can respond quicker knowing when the phone rings after midnight chances are these kids that should be in bed well ya know they are out playing.

jenni - if some are the posters on here are in the same situation, I HOPE they are either at break at work or not living in the free housing we provide. I would resent it if they were paying for a computer and internet access all while living in free housing.

As for your One of the mothers? question - Sure maybe one of them, but that wouldn't changed my wager of no less than 10 dads between them.

Sadly, I think you are right. People these days are so stupid - promise them a handout and you got 'em - that's how the Dems stayed in power so long and how the Clintons pulled it over so many eyes for so long. i hope they do wake up - this Dude hates America so and is SO feeding us a bowl of crap salad.

As long as the Post & Courier continue to only show Blacks in such a light, many of the "regular" posters will continue to have these opinions of Blacks and Hispanics.

There are a few who will claim that they have Black friends or know Black people. They don't. Many of the Whites who post here will look you in the eye and say, with all sincerity that for the most part Blacks aren't doing well, don't live in their neighborhoods or go to their schools so their assumptions of the ENTIRE Black race MUST be true.

Then you have women like Ms. Clinton and Ms. Speed that feed into the stereotypes.

Interesting when Dylan Klebold shot up Columbine High School no one said "well, here goes another white boy killing people. That's how they are". Or when Paris Hilton sleeps around no one said "here we go again, boy these White girls are such sluts"

However, let a Black or Hispanic face be shown on the news then you get folk on this board saying "those Blacks are just baby factories, thugs and criminals"

There are a select few posters on this board who continuously denigrate Blacks and Hispanics. Fill up the board with their rants on every article depicting 'us' in a poor light. But you NEVER see them type ONE word on a positive article highlighting a Black or Hispanic person.

That is if the Post & Courier would be brave and highlight more of the positive things that are going on in the Black community. How little by little, block by block and child by child many Black/Hispanic grass roots organization are doing what they can to make a positive difference. Doing everything from substance abuse counseling, job-training, afterschool and summer programs. Scholarships for college, tutoring so kids CAN graduate from high school. I could go on and on but we all know that newspapers are in the business of making money and the only way to do that in THIS environment is to cater to those readers/posters who want to see the negative and not the positive.

Don’t get me wrong, I cringe when I look at people such as Ms. Clinton and Ms. Speed. I shudder to think that they may be raising another generation of welfare recipients.

But I DON”T DENITGRATE AN ENTIRE RACE OVER THEIR ACTIONS.

Unlike many of you ‘regulars’ I don’t just comment for the sake of seeing my words online.

Also where does it say that these women have made a habit of living off the system?

Ok I will give you that one. Here is one way to prove or disprove what all of us are posting.

Since these women appear to want to make their fight public through the P&C by doing interview's let's ask the P&C to do an extensive background investigation on these 5 women and let's see what they come up with or ask these women to publish their life bio. Things like graduation date and from what school or highest grade completed, criminal charges, arrests or convictions, last place of employment. These are common job application questions. I guess other questions could be asked to answer some postings made.

Let's see if any of these women in question have been in the welfare system on average for over 5 years.

I would think this would be enough time to use these programs as “stepping stones” to advance ones self.

Now if I am completely wrong about what may be found out and these women have gone to great lengths to change and improve their situation and that of their children, then I offer my sincere apologies now.

Ey-

I couldn't agree with you more especially when it comes to Jesse and Al. Those two have been exploiting race issues and doing anything for media time for so long it is ridiculous. I think the both of them should just go away. However, deadbeat dads are a problem in all communities. I saw OBAMA's speech, and I am still not convinced that any one can make a person take care of their responsibilities if they don't want to. Both DSS and the court system are back logged with both deadbeat moms and dads of all races. Sending them to jail and garnishing their wages while a step in the right direction isn't enough to combat the problem.

gamecockwoman - Yep. He is surely just like one of these feel good preachers that doesn't even talk about God or religion, but just goes on and on. There is one out of Texas with a huge following (dont recall his name). He really reminds me of Obama. I don't really care, because I am not that religious. But what I really mean is that if I want real religion it isn't going to be from a "feel good" palm reader. So that being the case, I don't want my political leadership coming from the same kind of "feel good" palm reader. Obama is a 21st century "Psychic Palm Reader" telling us what we deep down want to hear while actually telling us nothing. He says people want "change", no sh#t. Our local Cub Scout Den Mother has more leadership experience than this guy.

sorry about getting away from the topic - The point is no Democrat is going to fix this problem. People receiving handouts are guaranteed votes. The Dems threaten them that the Repubs are going to take away their free cheese.

No work - no handouts!

winter23: you are right about the 'system' not being able to MAKE anyone WANT to own up to their responsibilities. But there has to be some consequences to not doing what is right. That goes for the fathers AND the mothers.

However, this conversation in the Black/Hispanic community has been long overdue.

While racism/bigotry will always be in our society, minorities cannot continue putting roadblocks in their own way and then turn around and blame others for their misfortunes. That is why I see the Jacksons and the Sharptons as abject failures as leaders in the Black community. Jackson rants about Obama's comments regarding the need for Black men to take care of their own, when he should have been screaming that from the rooftops for the past 2 decades. Bill Cosby was villified for saying publicly what so many of us were saying privately for years.

So now you have White people that think that all of us are inherently inferior, you have some of us who instead of taking responsibility for their own actions blames others for their lack of success, and then you add a media whose sole intent to incite racial rhetoric for the sake of ratings and dollars and you add all of that together and you have a society that instead of growing together is only tearing each other apart.

I don't have all of the answers for our societal ills, but I do get tired of the same old mantra of these posters on this board. It's gotten to the point that I just skim over their screen names so I don't get a headache. That goes for the race baiters on BOTH sides of the political aisle.

eye - So have you sent both Al and Jessee letters stating your opinion and expressed publicly (not on-line) that they don't represent you. Or have you instead personally gone to see either of them speak - did you get all googly-eyed, scream like a school girl, and throw your panties on stage.
(Sorry - I couldn't help myself.) The point is - Do you express yourself at family reunions that these two are idiots? Someone is financially supporting their stupid racist coalitions - It sure is hell isn't me, my family, or friends.

For all those who condemn Christians for expecting these people to take responsibility for themselves, the Bible teaches that if someone doesn't provide for their own, they are worse than an infidel.
God Himself expects these women to stop having children outside of wedlock and expects them to work to support them. Try reading the Bible you condemn.

Ey-

I couldn't agree with you more. Your post took the words right out of my mouth literally. I am so glad that you made it a point to mention that the Black/Hispanic conversation was long over due. I think that all politicians when they become elected officials start off with good intentions. I also think that because of the very nature of politics most elected officials and all their good intentions go out the window because you have to play the game in order to keep the seat period. As a result the people who put you in office lose.
Bill Cosby was villified when he made those statements because the truth hurts. You are right when you say the media will incite racial rhetoric to keep the ratings and dollars coming. Bill Cosby lost credibility with the public though because he is preaching one thing and living his life a different way is what his critics will say. Many would argue that Mr. Cosby should sweep in front of his own door before he gives advice to others. I don't care what choices Mr. Cosby made in his personal life because we will all be held accountable for our choices one way or the other. I appreciate all the sacrifices that those that came before me made so that I along with others would be able to live a better life. I am actively involved in my community not to get recognition but because I believe that to whom much is given much is required. Hopefully some of these societal ills will be solved one day once and for all. :)

I am not sure if the Post & Courier is to blame for this. Looks like they report what there is to report. Maybe they could do a better job of it but I don't think they pay certain groups of people to commit crimes and such so they can write about it later.

perspective: Unlike many of you, I have nothing to fear hence I do not hide behind a pseudonym on this board. So to answer your question yes, I do express myself both publicly and privately. What I’ve said today is nothing different than I’ve said before on this and several other boards, in front of small and large groups and in and on other venues.

I have neither an idea nor a care as to how Jackson or Sharpton are supported. Also I do not communicate with them or their organizations for I try not to waste my precious time.

Seriously? You seriously took your time to write that to me? Seriously?

Okay, now I'm angry with myself for even responding to you.

*sigh*

Instead of inadvertently offending you by slowly repeating myself, I will ask you to re-read my comment and take some time and effort and try to comprehend what I was trying to say. If you find yourself still confused, then I will try to explain myself in simpler terms.

I hate a lazy, everbody owes me moocher-no matter what the color of their skin.I also despise criminal thugs.I find it ironic and funny that they didnt want the "spectacle" of a hearing. Are ya kidding me? The fact that they are criminals and so are their kids in the newspaper repeatedly demanding they stay in govt housing isnt embarrassing or a spectacle? Now all of sudden theyre pretending to have pride or shame?Ha!Gimme a break!I think that public housing should be transitional only-not a permanent housing solution. As far as some posters feeling sympathy for them-I have NONE!Why should criminals of any kind get a free ride? The welfare system should be revamped to help those who are the working poor.People who bust their butts working everyday to support their families and struggle for food.To receive benefits you should be required to work and not PUNISHED financially for working.EX:You get a $5.00 an hr job to try to better your situation and lose your kids health insurance. There has to be a balance.
