Local restaurant group closes its Asheville location

Crew Carolina, which manages the local Boathouse restaurants, Carolina's, Carolina Catering and Simply Southern Products, has closed its restaurant near Asheville, N.C.

The Boathouse on Lake Julian closed Monday as part of a plan "to consolidate holdings and focus on new projects and ventures in the Charleston area," Crew Carolina said in a statement. The restaurant was opened in May 2003 and had 47 workers.

"Maintaining a unit so removed from our center has become more costly on a number of levels, from the management expense in travel to the expense in goods and services," said Batt Humphreys, communications director for Crew Carolina.

Earlier this year, the company abandoned plans to open a seafood restaurant in Greenville, citing the shaky economy.
