For some Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission activities, a chaperon is required for participants 15 and younger. Registration is required for all programs and some special events. Call 795-4386 or visit www.ccprc.com to register or for information.

July Programs

Early Morning Bird Walks at Caw Caw: The walk through many distinct habitats will allow participants to discuss birds, butterflies and other organisms. Registration is encouraged, but walk-ins are welcome. Meets at Caw Caw Interpretive Center. $5/free for Gold Pass Holders. 8:30 a.m.-noon July 12, 16, 19, 23, 26, 29.

Introduction to Climbing: Introduction to Belaying: This three-hour class will teach you the fundamentals of belaying. Participants will be prepared to take a belay test upon their next visit to the Climbing Wall. Preregistration required. Meets at James Island County Park. Age: 14 and up. Fee: $24/$20 CCR discount. 9 a.m.-noon July 5, 9.

Step and Steep, A Tea Farm Tea Party: Tea, once grown commercially at Caw Caw and now naturalized, thrives under oak and pine trees here. Group will visit these plants and sample tea made from them while discussing South Carolina tea history and cultivation. Preregistration required. A registered and paid chaperon is required. Meets at Caw Caw Interpretive Center. Age: 9 and up. Fee: $9/$7 CCR discount. 10 a.m.-noon July 5.

Sea Kayak Instructional Classes: Introduction to Kayaking. ACA-certified instructors will help you learn a new skill comfortably and enjoyably. Using a variety of boats, this entry-level course teaches you basic strokes and skills to have fun on the water. Preregistration required. Meets at James Island County Park. Age: 16 and up. Fee: $36/$30 CCR discount. 1-5 p.m. July 6.

Kayak Rolling: Kayak Rolling: Open Practice Session: Like any skill, kayak rolling must be maintained. This open pool session will provide an opportunity to practice in clear water with an instructor standing by. Participants age 13-15 can register for this course, but must be accompanied by an adult chaperon. Preregistration required. Meets at Splash Zone. Age: 13 and up. Fee: $18/$15 CCR discount. 6:30-8:30 p.m. July 8.

Summer Entertainment Series: Magic by Chaz. Chaz will join group from North Carolina with his magic show that will mystify all. Best suited for ages 3-12. Seating begins at 9:30 a.m. and shows start at 10 a.m. Advance registration for groups of 15 or more required seven days prior to each show. Only 300 seats will be sold for each show. Meets at Wannamaker County Park. Fee: $5/$4 CCR discount. 10-11 a.m. July 9.

Moonlight Mixer: Dance the night away under the stars at the Folly Beach Fishing Pier. Local DJ Rob Duren will spin the hottest oldies and beach music around. Beverages will be available for purchase on-site. Food and snacks will be available for purchase at Locklear's Beach City Grill and Gangplank Gift and Tackle Shop. Only 600 tickets will be sold for this event. Admission ticket (not receipt) is required for event entry. Advance purchase is recommended. No refunds or exchanges. Meets at Folly Beach Fishing Pier. Age: 3 and up. Fee: $10/$8 CCR discount/$10 on-site (if available). 7-11 p.m. July 11.

Sea Kayak Instructional Classes: Kayak Quickstart. During this two-hour hands-on informal program, experienced instructors will show you how you can safely enjoy kayaking on protected waters. Preregistration required. Meets at James Island County Park. Age: 16 and up. Fee: $12/$10 CCR discount. 6-8 p.m. July 11.
