Dorchester 2 plans music camp
The Fine Arts Department of Dorchester School District 2 will hold a beginning instrumental music camp for rising sixth-graders enrolled or interested in enrolling in an instrumental music program in middle school. The eight-day camp will be 9 a.m.-noon Aug. 4-14 at Rollings Middle School of the Arts.
Larry Barnfield, district fine arts coordinator, said the camp will allow students to explore the band and string instrument programs available in all middle schools.
"Students will be exposed to all instruments during the camp to determine their interests and talent," said Barnfield. All middle schools offer music programs along with other fine arts curriculum.
Students can register for the camp by calling the Gifted and Fine Arts Center at 832-5532. Space is limited and will be first-come, first-served basis. The cost of the camp is $40.

Reading room created online
The SchoolRooms team of experts has created a room specifically for summer reading activities.
To access the virtual room, users visit http://scsl.schoolrooms.net and select the Summer Reading Room link listed in the left Explore a Room column. The room has everything from arts projects to insect games available for students to access. All of the rooms have many activities for students and project ideas for teachers as well as librarians working with youth.
SchoolRooms is a new K-12 online multimedia discovery place for South Carolina students. SchoolRooms provides resources, built around South Carolina school curricula, to assist students with homework and school projects. Search your library's catalog, educational Web sites, and selected DISCUS databases all at once.
SchoolRooms also includes practical and relevant guides to assist parents, educators and librarians. This resource is available at libraries and from home, using a simple e-registration form available at the Web site. The South Carolina State Library is working with public libraries to make SchoolRooms available to all South Carolina citizens by fall 2008.
