North Charleston police probe shooting
Authorities say killing possibly self-defense
North Charleston police think that a fatal shooting in the Highland Terrace neighborhood Tuesday night possibly was self-defense.
Randy Ray, 51, died at Medical University Hospital at 10:36 p.m., less than an hour after being shot, Deputy Charleston County Deputy Coroner Brittney Wofford said.
Shortly before 10 p.m., police went to Highland Terrace Drive near where it passes under Interstate 26. Officers arrested 22-year-old Corey Grant in the area, said Spencer Pryor, the department's public information officer.
"(Grant) stated that, fearing for his life, he fired his weapon at the victim and fled the scene," Pryor wrote in a release.
Witnesses told police Ray and Grant had been arguing. During the altercation, Ray pulled out an object that Grant and witnesses thought was a handgun and hit Grant with it, Pryor said. Ray pointed the object at Grant, who fired his own handgun in response, he said.
Wofford said an autopsy Wednesday morning showed that Ray, of North Charleston, had been hit in the chest by a single bullet. Grant was awaiting a bail hearing on a charge of unlawfully carrying a pistol. Police continue to investigate.

Looks like we all need to start carrying sidearms, then the lowcountry will become like the old west of Wyatt Earp.

I'm not sure how the ACLU would feel about that PalmettoHawk. I'm sure that Mr. Grant's lawyer will be on their payroll.

Your rants are becoming tiresome and laughable. You are so intent on villifying blacks that it seems that is all you can articulate when posting.
By ONLY pointing out what you perceived to be what ALL THAT BLACKS ARE you are NO different than those Blacks who refuse to believe that there is a problem in their community, especially with young males.
How does it feel to be the other side of the same coin as Dot Scott, Sharpton and the rest of that happy crew?
You and the rest of those who live, think, post like you are a waste of my time. Don't bother to respond to me, I will ignore you today.
Heineken, ribs, potato salad are calling me and I will not allow my indignation towards ignorance to spoil my day.
For the record: If this fool is a career criminal, then by all means I hope they find ANY WAY POSSIBLE to put him away. No need to let him run free to wreak more havoc on our society.

palmettohawk: I'm with you on that one. What is so sad, I was raised in that neighborhood. Still have elderly family members living there. I along with many of my contemporaries grew up there and turned out fantastic.
Something is wrong with our world that allows young punks to run roughshod over people in a neighborhood of folk that just want to work hard, retire easy and live in their homes in peace.
Our legal (not justice) system is so flawed. If you put away criminal the first time and do so severely, it would send a strong message to the up and coming punks that this gangster/violent lifestyle isn't what it's cracked up to be.
Hire more prosecutors, judges and build more jails. Put them away even for the seemingly small stuff and things will turn around.

South Carolina, is the same state that will
throw a young man in jail, watch him drop out of school, complain about the crimes he has committed
and in turn say that the parents need to do something about their "bad" behavior and turn right around and post his wrong doing all over the news and print it for the world to know.
Yet, will get the department of social services to chastise the parents for disciplining them when they are young to try to make him a productive member of our society?!
Get it right and quite speaking out of both ends (one's an inney and the other is an outey)
Let the parents take care of their children, push the media out of our livingrooms, and watch our futures bloom with respect, dignity, modesty, and vigor, which would be far more that what we have now.
Yes, he should be punished for his crimes, but did his face and name have to be used to embarass his family. What did his mother feel everytime she sees his face plastered everywhere? Imagine what his mother was already feeling prior to his face and name published all over the country! Media, please leave families alone! STOP contributing to the break-ups by involving everyone in their business. Report something that has to do with peace, kindness, cute, funny, good, encouraging, and warnings of possible danger.
The story should have been on the person that lost their life to the violence, not on the violence and the person committing the crime!!!
Quit glorifying criminals and support the victims instead!!

I hope this was a justified shooting. If the guy pulled something out he deserves to be shot. If not the other guy deserves to be put away. If the gun was illegal, he deserves to be put away also.

eyfigueroa, Just pointing out the facts, To those who think that i'am ranting. Please come out and ride with North Chas.or any PD and see for yourself who is doing the most crime in our communties.who is in the county jail, who is in the morgues. Who is on the news everyday and in the pages of this paper. The kicker is the socalled community leaders are more worried about some old white man saying something about a superintendent than the deaths in the community they were elected to serve. So untill you are a victim or patrol the streets in these "LOVELY" communities, till then you dont know jack. Its not only here, just watch the First 48 and Crime 360 on A&E to see what is going on in our nation and who is doing by far the most killing. Have a HAPPY 4Th eyfigueroa, Please dont drink and drive some of my associates have to work the streets making it safe for you and yours.
