Griffin surges into Rice Planters lead

MOUNT PLEASANT – Matt Griffin, the top-ranked amateur in Australia, fired a 7-under-par 65 today and moved into a two-shot lead midway through the 36th annual Rice Planters Amateur golf tournament at Snee Farm Country Club.

Griffin is a 12-under-par 132, two shots in front of fellow Aussie Grant Scott and Brent Witcher of Lawrenceville, Ga., who both recorded second-round 66s.

First-round leader David Holmes shot 71 and is at 136.
