Customized patio kitchens are made for entertaining.

A stylish outdoor kitchen's focus is evidently on home entertaining i and they're popping up all over the Lowcountry, says Jamie Koontz of Carolina Kitchens in Wando. This outdoor kitchen, a recent Carolina Kitchens project at a home renovation off Wappoo Cut on James Island, combines the owners' taste for modern, clean lines with a kitchen customized for exactly how the owners plan to use it.

Design Tips:

1. Start with a great grill i in this case, a 48-inch DCS Built-In Gas Grill with two integrated side burners i and build the rest of the cabinetry design around it.

2. An added second story required structural support, but instead of windows or a solid wall, the couple chose an open grid to allow air and light into the space.

3. Custom Bahama louvered shutters add privacy and block direct sunlight that hits that side of the home during the day.

4. Two well-placed extras: the icemaker (with stainless steel front) and beside it, a hidden pull-out trashcan.

5. Tile is laid in French pattern for "elegant randomness."
