MOUNT PLEASANT — Traffic was slowed or stalled on the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge for repeated 5-minute intervals Sunday during the filming of a national television commercial for General Motors.

Mount Pleasant police cruisers escorted new, 2008 GM vehicles over the large span several times while cameras in a helicopter and on car-mounts recorded footage for a TV ad.

The national spot could air as soon as this spring, said Joel Zimmerman, producer for Rhythm & Hues production company based out of Los Angeles.

Zimmerman said they've been shooting around Charleston for the past few days, but the bridge was why they chose this area.

"It's a beautiful bridge," he said.

The crew, many of whom hail from the Carolinas, were on site at dawn and planned to be there until dusk, Zimmerman said.

He said they can film only on Sundays because there's less traffic.

Zimmerman said he hopes they weren't too much of an inconvenience. "We like to be invited back to places we visit," he said. "We will be presenting the city in a very favorable light."
