3 Bishop England football players arrested

Principal's son one of those accused by rival student

The Post and Courier
Wednesday, January 9, 2008

Three Bishop England High School football players, including the principal's son, were arrested Tuesday and accused of beating a Porter-Gaud High School student after a basketball game between the rivals in December.

The three seniors have been suspended, and all sports games between the two schools have been canceled for the remainder of the school year.

"The friendly rivalry has eroded," said Maria Aselage, spokeswoman for the Catholic Schools Office, of which Bishop England is a member.

The beating occurred Dec. 7 on Daniel Island after a basketball game between the schools at Bishop England, according to a police report. A 15-year-old Porter-Gaud student, who was not identified because he is a juvenile, told police his vehicle hit a curb in the parking lot in front of the school as he left.

When he stopped on Seven Farms Drive to check for damage to the vehicle, three young men approached him and assaulted him with closed fists, according to the report.

A witness took the victim to East Cooper Hospital. The witness also identified the assailants as three boys with whom he had attended elementary school.

The victim had bruises and an injury to his nose. He was treated in the emergency room and released that night, the report said. He later had surgery at Medical University Hospital, an affidavit said.

The suspects, all age 17, surrendered at the Charleston Police Department on Tuesday morning at the request of Sgt. Sterling Dutton, the sergeant said. He said they made no statement admitting involvement in the assault.

John Artigues of Sullivan's Island and Michael Hazel and James Alexander

Held, both of Charleston, are charged with assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature. They were released on their personal recognizance Tuesday night in bond court in Moncks Corner.

Held, son of Bishop England Principal David Held, was a linebacker. Hazel was a running back and Artigues played wide receiver and defensive back.

"We're working together to remedy the situation. The administrations are working in concert. We're looking for good, healthy ways to have a rivalry in the future," said Ed Steers, athletic director for Porter-Gaud.

Bishop England Athletic Director Paul Runey would not comment.

On Tuesday, parents of Bishop England and Porter-Gaud students received letters from school officials stating the games between Bishop England and Porter-Gaud have been canceled for the rest of the 2007-08 academic year.

That includes Saturday's basketball game at Porter-Gaud. Spring sports also will be canceled. They include soccer, tennis, golf and track and field.

Officials from both schools will review the situation at the end of the academic year and decide if the games will resume in time for the 2008-09 school year.

It's not the first time the schools have suspended competition. Both schools were vandalized by students in the days leading up to a football game in September 1997. The rivalry always included pranks such as toilet paper and signs. But in 1997, pranks included spray painting buses, walls and fences at the two schools. At Porter-Gaud, a monument was damaged and a figure was hung in effigy.

The two schools didn't play again until Porter-Gaud traveled to Bishop England for a basketball game on Dec. 10, 1999.

The principal of Bishop England High School, David Held, should resign.

As he has - obviously - been remiss in raising his own child, how can we expect him to continue to oversee the behavior of our children.

He should resign, forthwith.

The above comment (castleton1) is simply a rush to judgment. You don't know all the facts, but you are willing to jump to the conclusion that Held should lose his job.

You base your judgment that Mr. Held has "been remiss in raising his own child" on a newspaper article? Is your logic that -If a child gets in trouble, then the parent has been remiss? One is not proof of the other.

Is there a hidden agenda in the castleton1 post?

The comment by castleton1 is right. The facts that these boys committed a cowardly and criminal act are all that are needed to show that all should be expelled from Bishop England and Mr. Held should resign.
This and earlier incidents show that the change at BE from a Roman Catholic school to a somewhat religiously connected prep school has not been a good thing. The priest rectors of Bishop England - Fr. O'Brien, Fr. Manning, Fr. Croghan and Fr. Kelly would never have tolerated an atmosphere where students would even consider such a cowardly assault.
No, Tulane75, I do not have an agenda, just a sadness over what has come to pass. I was class of 1964 at BE (played football too.) Over many years members of my family and my friends have attended Bishop England, Porter, Gaud, and Porter-Gaud.
As a father and grandfather I hope that I would do the right thing and resign if my son, or even my grandson, had done what Mr. Held's son did.

These calls for the principal to resign are ridiculous. If the young man is 17, that's old enough to know better and also answer for his crime.

Let's beat the right drum, here, folks.

The above comment laments "the change at BE from a Roman Catholic school to a somewhat religiously connected prep school." Porter (now known as Porter-Gaud) also went from an Episcopal parochial school "to a somewhat religiously connected prep school."

I agree this should be sorted out first. I'm not excusing what was clearly cowardly, criminal and inexcusable behavior by the B-E students, but this is really an age old problem and tragically not limited to the "new" B-E. All around, we see the results of people who have failed to understand or take responsibility for their actions. They don't think about the consequences they bring upon themselves and others. Not to ignore the many young people who do get it right, it does make it harder for those with integrity to succeed. This is world that responds favorably to perceptions of power(an addiction of bullies) instead of individual merit (a true measure of the civilized).

Rivalries can be healthy provided they are based on true merit and not perceptions of power. We should ask what messages we as adults are sending to young people when we think they aren't listening. These may be messages that in many ways are rooted in our own prejudices, insecurities, ignorance and even envy.

BE, P-G, CHS, Burke & St.A (among many other local schools, public & private) benefited from healthy rivalries. As shown, sometimes these went too far. Excesses brought disgrace on all, not just the perpetrators. Today's emphasis on instant gratification makes anticipating these excesses more difficult. Too often the results are tragic, even deadly. This is not a video game. It doesn't help that too many of our schools and those who identify with them are no longer seen as part of a larger community with roots connected to supporting neighborhoods.

All around we see examples of the lessons we are teaching our young people. It's not just at B-E. (You can add Buist to this sad list). In very ordinary ways all of our schools are teaching our children intolerance and denial of responsibility. P-G certainly hasn't escaped the sting of this charge not long ago. Students from suburban Wando and wanna-be young gangstas from the inner city's Gadsden Green housing project have made equally shocking headlines recently. Each criminal acts of violence reflected an all too similar disregard for common sense, if not a total lack of moral responsibility.

Before we make a scapegoat out of the principal at B-E (let justice take its course), I would suggest that we also reconsider the messages about "us vs. them" or "right vs. wrong" that we are sending from EVERY "principal's" office and trustee's board room on a daily basis...from Daniel Island, Albemarle Point, 75 Calhoun St and even 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. This is what's shaping the attitudes of our young people and it's threatening the safety of all of us.

For the record, members of my immediate family attended or taught at B-E, P-G, CHS and Burke...but not St. A.

I remember going to school in September 1997 and seeing the vandalism done by PG and I remember the banned games. Three kids are not indicative of an entire population. Also, calling for Held to resign is premature. You can be the best parent in the world and your kids can still turn out to be trouble-makers.

First to John Q. I am sure neither of these kids live in PUBLIC housing with a stipulation that they will be evicted if their kids are involved in a crime. Second lets not have a rush to judgement based on a news article. I don't believe that it contains all of the facts and if you think that it does, I have some of the same property to sell that MyView has. I know all 3 of these young men personally as my son has played football and attended school with them for many years and I don't believe this was a random act. What they did was wrong and they should be punished by being expelled and maybe charged with a misdemenor assault not a felony. There have been numerous bad acts between these 2 schools for years. I had my car vandalized by PG students at a game because I had a BE magnet on my car. My son was taunted and harrassed by a PG student at a basketball game and the police had to remove the student. Lets put all things in context, if the PG students parent was not a lawyer and the kids did not attend BE, would this be in the paper and a BREAKING NEWS STORY on channel 2. I know a young lady who attends West Ashley who was attacked by 3 girls and had her nose broken, required surgery and there was never a mention of it in the paper and the girls were not charged with a crime. So where is the special treatment...more like UNJUST treatment!!! Lets just pray that these young men learn a lesson and will be able to rebound from this to develop the great potential I know they all have!!

I'm amazed at the ignorance, arrogance and egomaniacal hypocricy that precipitates such statements as in the above that calls for the resignation of Mr. Held based (as presented) purely on the presumed actions of his son, particularly at this juncture in the investigative and judicial process. Could one go as far to presume that such kneejerk reactions and the emotions indicative therein are similar to those that insighted the incident itself, ergo in fact validating it? Do we still wonder where our culture is running amuck in it's decline in core values!? Even if you feel yourself somehow worthy to be deemed to function under an assumption that Young Mr. Held is in fact guilty as charged (based on a newspaper article), to what extent was his participation in same? To what extent is Mr. Held senior to be directly responsible for this presumed action of his "17" year old son given what is known to date? How does this correlate to his professional position anymore then anyone else? How many of you can state that your family is free of anyone who has historically transgressed legally, ethically and/or even violently? To what extent was his/her repective parent responsible and thereby convicted legally and/or professionally? I don't know any of the people involved herein but, I do know injustice when I whitness it. Mr. Held senior is in an influencial role in a school environment. Shouldn't he be judged purely upon his track record therein and thereon? Schools aren't supposed to be a child's moral basis. Families are.

In my 35 years as an educator I never worked in or knew of any school that offered curriculum in intolerance and denial of responsibility. Quite the contrary, educators work everyday to teach acceptance and responsibility. Needless to say, it has become a daily struggle for our educators due to lack of family support.

To put any blame on the schools for these types of bully actions is ridiculous. No educator encourages this type of behavior.

This is why I wonder why there is always such a strong focus by the media on referring to these criminal acts as being committed by ??? High School students. Where they go to school is insignificant other than to sensationalize and inflame the issue. Typical old time yellow journalism.

Wait. The act was cowardly on the part of the three regardless of the provocation of the one. Ergo, immediate suspension required, no wait for 'presumed innocent' legal determination. Because this determination duration probably lengthy, BE provision for academic support outside of the campus should have been provided until ultimate determination [kind of like suspension-with-pay]. BE headmaster also should have immediately taken the initiative to personally meet with the PG headmaster and apologize BECAUSE THE ACT WAS COWARDLY. The acknowledgement of the apology and the reason for it should then have been communicated to both student bodies and it be made clear that the apology did not characterize any measure of legal accountability. The lack of such 'defusing' has resulted in the cancellation of athletic competition between the schools for the season. It is the lack of these two actions on the part of the BE headmaster [suspension of cowards and defusing] that augurs for his removal. It has nothing to do with his son being involved; although that may have clouded his judgement. What would Nick Theos have done?

I have a question. Why do some people automatically shift blame to the parents when young adults commit crimes? Yes the parents are responsible for the proper upbringing of their children, but a parent can't be at their sides, 24/7 ensuring they hang out with the right group of kids and make the right decisions. Parents believe they raise their children with the right morals and respect, but sometimes who the kids choose as friends can tamper with everything you've taught them. This day and age, there's a need to be "cool". You wouldn't believe what some kids do to gain acceptance from their peers. These kids were 17. Old enough to know better, but still acted the way they did. This isn't their parents fault. They shouldn't be the fall guy this time.

The reason that the 2 families were being evicted was the special stipulation that is put on public housing, as well as section 8 housing. THAT is the difference.

" The Charleston Housing Authority has strict regulations that say an entire family may be evicted if any individual resident is involved in serious criminal activity.

Tenants sign a lease that includes a zero-tolerance policy for such offenses."

It is a difficult situation, but it was known up front. These children got their families thrown out, not anyone else. There is a huge difference between these two cases. If any of the 3 young men in this case live in public housing, then their families may face the same consequences.

Trust me I understand that part but I can't believe some posters response to both cases. THAT"S MY POINT!! I would think that everyone would post something similar to each case.

You see some posters saying where was mom with Gadsden case and then the same poster that says mom and dad can't be everywhere in other cases. I just can't understand why some posters believe mom has to be everywhere and then say mom can't be everywhere. That's my only thing. I know mom and dad can't be everywhere and I only brought this up because the first post that says the principal should resign for his kid actions. WTF?? Mom and dad can't be accountable for everything and each week when something happens with a child you see the same post where was mom and then next week the same poster will say don't blame Mom.....that's the part I don't understand.

The 15 year old PG kid ( driving illegally I imagine since it was after dark w/o an adult) was witnessed doing doughnuts and driving over and damaging a sign on BE property IE : pulling over to check damage to his car. It was witnessed by the 3 arrested - they gave chase and did something incredibly stupid. I wonder if charges were pressed for doing damage to school property??
Anyway the moron that said the principal should resign - is just that - a moron. If all of us parents lost our job because something stupid our kids did...then the majority of us would be unemployed Maybe the 15 yr olds father should be fired as an attorney because he let his kid drive at night and do doughnuts on private property.

What a bunch of hypocrites!!!! When a crime was committed by a group of poor, minority kids you all called for their heads as well as those of their families'. Now that we have a group of students who are from wealthier backgrounds and the majority of them are white you want to treat it like it was a prank. Whether you're being held up by someone with a pellet gun or being brutalized by a gang it's still a crime and they should be held accountable. If the stick up guys families have to pay for their actions then the same should be expected of the families of the gangsters.

Is it possible that the school rivalry excuse is just that,
and that one or more of these three bullies has, can, or will engage in this kind of behavior because he has never had to face consequences for bullying before? Seems to me that if you don't take care of this when they're little, everyone ends up with a problem when they're big. All,
A lot of discussion about what actions "should" be taken.
It's all pretty straight forward:
As for the 3 BE students: The Student Handbook is very clear as to the reasons for expulsion.
As for Mr. Held: The Diocese of Charleston will decide.
As for the parents of the BE students: The civil courts will decide ($$$$).
Given that, we now can concentrate on something a little more meaningful.

Local school rivalry has gone on long before you and I attended high school. Because I have grown up in this area, I understand what these kids were thinking which resulted in their actions. First of all, NO, it is not right what the BE students did. However, I must clarify that I heard that this student from Porter-Gaud is not a saint in this event either; he created the confrontation by driving over Bishop England's front lawn in order to leave tire marks on the sodded grounds. And yes, two wrongs do not make a right, but, let's not jump to conclusions or sides either and make this a witch trial in regards to the parents and/or principal. The bottom line is that the BE students should be punished for their actions by suspension or expulsion and they should face whatever fate the courts decide to hand them at the time of their trial(s).

No the Wando kids did a heist....2 people in the store robbing folks and 4 lookouts outside...that was a heist. THOUGHT OUT AND CALCULATED. They split the "score" equally! No one blamed the parents for that incident and again the parents should not be blamed.

Everything that happened at Goose Creek High School before Christmas break. Kids bringing guns to school fighting and going crazy. Again the parents were not blamed and they should not be blamed.

The mother whose two children died within a year. Her second child age 19 sitting on the porch with his friends. He was shot and killed, everyone was worried about the mother's shirt and blamed her for her son's death.

The poor little 14 year old girl that died right before Christmas when she took her father's car out. No one blamed the parents and the parents should not be blamed.

The little kid in Berkeley county (age 5 I think) he took a gun to school and no one blamed the parents and the parents SHOULD be blamed.

3 different kids from 3 different families rob someone with a fake or a real gun and the parents face evictions and the mothers are blamed because they have more children than the norm and live in public housing. These parents should not be blamed for the stupid actions done by the kids as well.

Now we have this incident where school rivalry and a prank is the blame. Kids are going to be kids (that is what some of you all are saying) and there is about 2 or 3 posters that are blaming one parent for his son's actions and I don't care if he was a Mayor. He should not be blamed.

Please tell me why I can't compare cases because a lot of yall are hypocrites. One day Mom is blamed for everything and the next day we should not blame mom.....

You never stop being a parent, but when do you stop blaming the parent for everything stupid a child has done. Think about it in 3 years or less these "children" would be of age.

Here are the facts as I know them.
1) This incident followed the game where BE students chose to where nooses around their necks. This following a recent suicide of a PG student.
2) BE refused to punish the students involved in the noose incident as it did not come down from the Catholic Schools Office that the children should be punished in any manor.

What does matter is, how can school rivalries go so far? Recently in the media the Citadel Cadets were under fire for their slanderous display at a basketball game. These Cadets aplogized. Why should the BE students not be held accountable to an apology? Especially with this assault incident directly following the noose incident. Strong words were likely shared between the schools--which increased tension.

These 3 students were likely caught up in a moment. Why people resort to violence is beyond me, but it does happen. Should these boys be held accountable, absolutely! Do their parents hold responsibilty in this, of course--they are minors. However, for the principal to lose his job over this incident should be for the Catholic Schools Office to decide. Was the entire incident handled properly? I don't think it should reflect soley on his responsibilty as a parent.

Yes, SOMWILLIS, that is the understanding that I have of this incident as well and in addition, this PG student was indeed vandalizing the BE campus prior to this fight. I find the fact that any of this had to come to any violence at all completely unfortunate and should not have happened. Now, these three boys are looking at up to 10 years in prison if convicted of this crime.

P&C, for once, please do some investigative journalism and please get the facts of the story correct. I do understand that it is so easy to just report what the news release says rather than to actually find out what the real story is behind an incident, as we have seen this happen time and again with many incidents in Charleston. I would like a media outlet that actually wants to report what is truly going on versus what is just being fed to us through a news release.

Mr. Held did almost everything wrong in this situation. The kids that did the beating were in school for 2 weeks after it happend. That week i got written up for chewing gum and in my head i was thinking these three kids beat up some kid to the point where he needed to get surgery and they arent getting in any trouble because the principles son was involved.. completly not fair. Then when Mr. Held realized parents were getting involved and wondering why these kids werent geting in trouble, and parents even e-mailed him.. then he decides to suspend them 3 weeks after the actually fight. and this article is making it out to be that the kids beat him for absolutly no reason, in no way do i agree that they should have beat him up but after the game he was doing donuts in the parking lot and probably said somethings, and from my experience at BE Gilly, Alex, and Hazel are the people you really dont want to mess with. Also, Mr. Held has strict rules and when a party with alcohol is foudn out by the faculty the kids found there are suppose to be in detention (its in the school handbook) About 3 parties have gotten busted, but becuase Alex Held was there the school did nothing to get them in trouble.

In regard to damage being done by the victim to BE property is false. Also, Reality, the "moron" who said that David Held should lose his job hit the nail on the head. These kids were not held accountable at all in the beginning. One was even allowed to continue on the wrestling team. Because of the miss handling by the current administration(Mr. Held) the disiplinary actions to be made have been placed in hands of the Diocese. I mean heck the 15 year old did have to go to the hospital and the other 2 boys did nothing to stop this kid from getting beat up so yes they are just as responsible. If this fight happened at dark in the street what if one of these 4 kids fell down hit their head onto the ground and died. Very well said, but in realistically, the kid or kids who committed the crime are going to have to bite the bullet and take responsibility. Even if that means humiliation by the media, expulsion and having to pay hefty fines or even do jail time should criminal charges be pressed. Maybe they are good students, and well educated with no priors. That could most certainly have some bearing on their punishment. They are old enough to know the repercussions of such actions. As far as the PG student, if he was vandalizing as some mention, he too should face the consequences as well. If you were the PG student who had their @$$ kicked, would you want them punished to the fullest extent?

P&G wondering how it was going to affect the Summerville/Wano football game instead of how it affected the accused lives. One day I'd like to see the Post and Courier have these headlines " 5 members of the Spanish Club arrested for shoplifting" If every school yard fight was put in the paper it would 1oo pages each day. The fact is it was a PG kid and BE students- makes a great news story - at the expense of further affecting the families involved. It is evident that what happened on Dec. 7th was completely wrong, and these guys should be reprimanded for their wrong actions. However, as a 17 year old it is easy to understand the "heat of the moment" anger which probably triggered this whole thing. The PG student was antagonizing the BE students and should have known better than to start something with these individuals. That is not to say that these three should get away with it. They shouldn't. As a BE student, we are taught good morals and right from wrong. We also are taught that everyone makes mistakes,be quick to forgive, and do not judge. We're only human. I know these guys and am friends with them. I can honestly say they are good people that come from good families. They made a bad choice, but their choice should not reflect who they or their families are as people. I know 2 of the 3 boys families and they are both amazing people. They do their best to raise their boys right, and should not be held accountable for this thoughtless action. Mr. Held is a great principle and BE would not be the elite school it is today without him. He truly cares about each student. I care about these guys and their families, and it hurts me to see people that hardly know them judge their character. I support Gilly, Alex, and their families completely. I know they would do the same for me if i were in this situation. Let the proper consequences be instilled, but please do not drag the innocent families and our principle into this. Get your facts straight. I was at the BE-PG game and we have an awesome but strict administration who would never allow nooses to into the game, and believe it or not we have amazing students who would never disrespect a death of another student. The BE-PG games are always themed and the administration is always on the look out for unappropriate items.

ThisIsInteresting:

Don't get mad at Mr.Held for having to serve a detention! That's a clear-cut rule in the handbook and dealing with a student chewing gum is completely different from the situation with the boys. Oh and Mr.Held doesn't give you your detentions, your disciplinarian does!

and "Gilly, Alex, and Hazel are the people you really don't want to mess with?" Seriously?...You probably don't even know them! Hazel wouldn't hurt a fly and wasn't even involved in the incident except for the fact that he was there and couldn't just leave b/c he wasn't driving that night. Alex is one of the quietest kids at school and Gilly is someone who you would joke around with...not be scared of.

and btw Mr.Held's 1st priority is to act as a parent first and when his son gets busted at a party he's gonna act as a parent and discipline his son outside of school. would you want your parent to contact the school and tell them that you were busted at a party? and honestly BE is not gonna get involved with something that happened off campus like a party that got busted unless the police get involved.

blync:

He only went to military school b.c of a false accusation that was proven untrue with a lie detector test. His family is an awesome and generous family that after football games not only feed all of the families and BE football players, but also the oppossing team.

"Here are the facts as I know them.
1) This incident followed the game where BE students chose to where nooses around their necks. This following a recent suicide of a PG student."

Please clarify if you attended the game and "know" this fact? I heard this rumor and spoke to many people who attended this game and they said that they saw no BE students with nooses. Now, did one or two of these troublemakers have them? Perhaps they did, but you make it sound as if tons of kids were in the stands with nooses. Unless you saw this with your own eyes, it it irresponsible to relay this information as "fact"! My child was at the game and I asked if this happened. He told me no, and that administrators always attend the games to make sure that the students are not inappropriate. In fact, he said, "Mr. Held would not let that happen, Mom."

Every school has trouble makers, from Stall to BE to Porter Gaud. Don't paint everyone with the same brush. And by the way, not all kids who attend BE are from "rich families". Many BE families work very hard and sacrifice to send their kids to catholic schools. They all don't live on Daniel Island, and most have ties to the school that go back generations.

Blync, you sound like a very responsible teen. Don't let the negative posters draw you into the craziness. Tell your friend that we are praying for her family.

If the kid who got beat up was doing donuts on the lawn, he SHOULD be charged with vandalism. The suspects are justifiably charged as well.

Just the facts: the PG kids did go over to BE in 1997 and paint up the school. They came forward, had to go to the BE administration, admit what they did and pay the consequences. None of the BE kids came forward for the vandalism at PG, which included defacing the memorial to Michael Rawl, so there was no punishment/no consequences.

A BE parent told me today that the PG kid had more than a broken nose and some bruises - his child told him he had a fractured cheekbone/eye socket and required surgery.

The BE and PG student handbooks both state that the students represent their schools even when they are not in uniform or on school property and will be held accountable for their actions by their schools.

If only kids from ALL these schools knew.......high school is so irrelevant. They take it much too seriously......

Standing up for BE is what you were doing - before your comment to "charleston grown". The suggestion that it is ok to beat someone up who destoys property is ridiculous. You cannot justify bad behavior by pointing to other bad behavior.

I think we are justified in standing up for BE. I think that the BE kids will have to earn the priviledge of the BE community standing up for them by being honest about what happened and taking responsibility for their actions. My heart goes out to all the families involved.

anonymousstudent (anonymous) says...

I had too much to say on the issue and didn't realize there was a character limit when I first wrote this, so I had to split all of my thoughts into two comments. If you are going to take the time to read this please read both this and the following comment because they are meant to go together. Thankyou.

I, myself, am a student at Bishop England, and can say that a lot of the above comments have deeply saddened me due to the ignorance many seem to show. I will try my best to put my feelings delicately, but I am bound to offend a few and that is a chance I am willing to take in order to fully express myself.

Bishop England is a wonderful school with a beautiful campus that has given me opportunities in academics, sports, and the arts but I still have many concerns for the school's future.

I am sorry if I offend anyone when I say this, but I can't sit by and watch people write about how these, my fellow classmates, are undeserving of punishment, that this was simply a "highschool brawl." These young men are 17 years old, they are about to go to college and live on their own. A beating is a beating no matter the age of the abuser or the victim. Three against one is not only cowardly but sickening.

I realize that now police action is being taken and that these students are currently "indefinetly suspended" from Bishop England, but I have a copy of the handbook and it says students who "demonstrate behavior that is judged to be detrimental to the school community will be expelled from Bishop England." If the actions of these boys are not considered detrimental it pains me to think what possibly could be.

Another thing that I would like to address is the fact that these students were not suspended until nearly two weeks after the incident and I, along with my other students, walked the halls with them while administrators were fully aware of the situation.

January 9, 2008 at 7:40 p.m. ( | suggest removal )

anonymousstudent (anonymous) says...

One more thing I would like people to realize is how ridiculous their words sound when they claim that these boys do not deserve punishment due to this being a one time action and that they had a previously pristine record. I hate to be the one to break it to you folks, but this is simply the first time they have been caught. On the Monday following the incident one of my own teachers said, "Why am I not surprised they are involved?" Shouldn't that be saying something? It is in my personal experience that good kids do not simply take it upon themselves to beat another no matter the circumstances. It doesn't matter whether it is a rivalry or not, or whether they were provoked or not. Though I can not definetly say, I highly doubt this was the first time they ganged up on another. Perhaps it was only the first time when things went too far and now they are facing the JUST consequences.

As far as Mr.Held's resignation, I can not say I would be terribly sad to see him go. I do feel that Mr.Held has done a lot for our school, but I also believe he has allowed for a strong emphasis on sports following Bishop England's write up in Sports Illustrated as having a superb program. Since Mr.Held has been principal we no longer have a full time drama or choral teacher only a full time art teacher and who knows when that will end? As both an athlete and artist I feel the dramatic lack of balance.

At the end of the day, everyone has to be responsible for their actions whether it's failing because you didn't study for a test or going to jail because you made the conscious decision to harm another human being. I am a high school student and it was a long time ago that my parents taught me responsibility. It's past time that these boys face up to the consequences of their actions and learn it too.

I was at the game, there were no nooses. BE administrators are overly sensitive to much less, and frankly that is giving the kids too much credit; some were dressed as pirates some in 1970's garb, I think (what it was supposed to mean I don't know). There were maybe 3-4 administrators (including Held) birddogging every BE move.

PG supposedly has a sportsmanship creed, it must not extend to the parents..... as while the cops could have been keeping people from doing doughnuts and instigating fights outside, they were too busy breaking up the fist fight between the PG coach and one of his player's fathers. If a couple kids getting charges pressed against them is a story, why can't a coach/parent near brawl get at least get a mention.

2/I'm sure if these families can afford to send their kids to BE or PG they are'nt living in GOV HOUSING paid for by the taxpayers nor do they have a mortgage with a stipulation they be booted for unruly kids.

What those boys did was wrong. They acted like thugs. I never questioned if their parents cared for them or loved them. I questioned the examples they were setting. pawning your child off to a military school because you can't deal with him sounds like a great example.

No, BE students did NOT wear nooses to the game. BE students did not PLAN to wear nooses to the game.
Many students at BE knew and were friends with Peter, and our student body would never dream of doing something to disrespect him. As mentioned before, our faculty would never ever allow it...EVER. Last year BEHS went through the loss of a classmate, so we know what PG students were going through...we felt the same way.
Even though BE is being portrayed negatively because of the whole fight situation, it is an unfair, ridiculous, and offensive assumption that we, the whole student body, would plan something so awful.

i had heard about the incident and i was driving by BE the next day and our school speed limit sign was ruin as though someone hit it and there was tire marks all in the grass. so he might have "hit the curb" but he also hit the sign and spun into our grass.this article states that he was 15 well as i believe 16 is the age u r able the get ur waiver to drive to school events so that means he cannot legally drive at night. Mr. Held resigning well i think not i would hate to see him go and especially not over his child actions. well i think ppl should hear the whole story umm i no gilly alex and michael they wouldnt just walk up to some kid and beat him up because he goes to pg something must have happened to make them react that way soo make sure u know all the facts before u make any accusations thanks.

This quote demonstrates how buyist the City of Charleston Police seems to be:

"A 15-year-old Porter-Gaud student, who was not identified because he is a juvenile, told police his vehicle hit a curb in the parking lot in front of the school as he left. When he stopped on Seven Farms Drive to check for damage to the vehicle..."

Okay, first off, what is a 15 year old doing driving late at night? I mean it is possible if he managed to get his learner's permit on his birthday and got his restricted liscence as well as a waver 6-11 months afterwards, but that is highly unlikely. Shouldn't the police officer atleast questioned why he was driving past his curfew?
Secondly, I can agree with him saying he hit a curb in the parking lot, but he probrably hit this curb before/after he vandalized our school's campus doing donuts on the field.
Now I can understand why these three classmates of mine are being punished, but this underaged Porter Gaud driver who vandalized our school's property should not get out of this without any kind of punishment for what he's done. All this article does is hate on Bishop England, but nothing is said about the wrongs that the PG kid has done. Somethings wrong here

Few who know Gilly Artigues or have seen him on a field or in a gym, can deny that they had the thought that his anger, attitude and arrogance would result in something like this happening. He acts no different than his father did at his age.
Before lumping these 4 young men together, I hope the facts can be known. All 4 had a part in this crime, but probably at different levels, and hopefully each will be punished appropriately for their part.
In response to the question 'What would Nick Theos have done?' My guess is that all three would have been immediately expelled. Mr. Theos would work with the police to see that Bishop England provided them whatever evidence they needed. He would have attempted his best to keep this from the media. He would have personally visited the PG young man in the hospital and apologized to him and his family. He would have sent an apolgy to the PG school. When all of that was done, he would have visited with each of the 3 BE families and prayed with them.

This is about sports.

It's about how players handle themselves on and off the field. Back in the day, High School Sports was where you learned how an athlete was supposed to act before, during and after a game, any game. In season or off season, in uniform or out we were gentlemen.

You wore a coat and tie on game day, you played fair, gave 110%, did whatever the coach asked and hoped to God you didn't have to run anymore laps. You represented your school from the first day of practice your freshmen summer until :.. well forever.

A High School athlete was supposed to be above reproach not above the law, and if we messed up even in the slightest way "coach" was there to be sure that punishment was swift and memorable.

We had revelries and we did some pretty crazy things to the other team's, mascot, parking lot and even their football field score board (thanks Jerry you were the greatest geek ever) though we never got caught, had we been "outed" I'm pretty sure we wouldn't have been arrested.

We never beat up anyone or damaged any property, ok so we painted a rock or two with "our colors". But this is nuts!

For these 3 there's plenty of blame to go around, the parents, the school, the coaches, and the teachers but when it comes right down to it you have 3 athletes who didn't understand that their actions regardless how they felt they were justified were wrong.

Maybe they thought they'd be HEROS... but my High School coach would have "kicked our donkey's butts back to the stone age" and then it would be our parents turn.

First of all, yes the kid who got beat up was driving after his alloted time. Secondly, he did not do donuts anywhere, all he did was bump into the curb and hit a mph street sign that caved in his bumper on his truck. He went down the road and pulled into a parking lot when these boys and others trapped him in, and came and opened the door to his truck and started beating him. This Porter Gaud student did nothing otehr then mess up the street sign that got put up immedialty after and broke some of his truck. And whoever said Gilly and the rest of those boys are harmless, they were trying to pick fights the whole night, how do I know I was there. Anyone who thinks these boys are harmles should go look into their facebooks.

we're JUST teenagers. and all we ask for is a little slack.
we dont know what we do half the time and when we do it...

he did.
he made us look like a bunch of idiots
and bad people. well honey we arent.
but also he wasnt even supposed to be driving.hes only 15.he shouldnt even have a waiver.he sould have gotten in trouble too.
i think that what gilly and alex and hazel did
was a very bad choice.
they should have stood up
and not done anything and be the bigger people
that they really and truly are.
but they didnt they stooped down to this little
kids level and beat him up.
but in a way the kid deserved it
he lied
he vandalized
he wasnt supposed to be driving
and you know what...its goign to come back to haunt him one day
he is going to pay for all the stuff that he did wether its next month or next year. or 10 years from now
hes goign to realize what he did was wrong.
becuase as far as im concerned
these 3 guys have alredy payed for what they did
and its his turn now.

he never did anything wrong
he has always been a very good principal

Im sorry behsgirl but I have to wholeheartedly disagree with you. I'm not going to sit here mudslinging words back at you, but I would just like you to consider some of the things that you are saying.

Yeah, kids deserve a little slack sometimes. Everyone breaks curfew once in a while, everyone gets a bad grade because they didn't study. Everyone does not however consciously decide to gang up on one another.

I am not judging these boys on their character which you claim to know so well. I am only judging their actions, and for those punishment is deserved.

As far as the porter guad student all I can say is, grass and signs are a far cry from beating another human being. I think you do not realize the severity of that, as well as how often beatings of this nature end in paralysis or death. Perhaps when someone is killed, you won't be asking for "some slack."

It is not the paper or the media's fault for making our school look bad, nor is it the responsibilty of the porter student. It was the radical response of these young men which has tarnished our school's name despite the fact that so many of our student's do not at all support their behavior.

Also, the "but in a way the kid deserved it" comment is horrible. People are not allowed to conduct their own forms of justice today, that is what our judiciary system is for. No one ever deserves to be beaten. And how hypocritical of behsgirl1230 to say that because the PG young man was driving when he most likely was not supposed to means he should be severely punished. She says "we're just teenagers". This young man is also a teenager himself. Doesn't he deserve as much sympathy as she is feeling for the BE students? She implies that she herself has made mistakes, but as a teenager should be forgiven.

All people make mistakes and should be forgiven for them, but also punished. Without consequences, the world would be in chaos.

First of all, I am a BE student. I am lucky to attend this school, and for all you people who feel that you have a right to insult Mr. Held, maybe you should realize what an amazingly tough job he has and what a wonderful contribution he has made to the institution. Mr. Held truly cares about his students and their wellbeing and has a day to day presense around campus, where he brings humor and enthusiasm.
With regards to the three boys, I don't know all the details, but I know that the article was extremely slanted and did not address the full issues, especially with regards to the instigation at the hands of the PG student. Secondly, I know that these boys have committed a serious wrongdoing to this PG student, and I am sorry for his pain. However, not one of these three boys is not sitting at home tonight feeling extremely uspset about their actions. Knowing them all personally, not one of them is malicious, cruel or violent at heart. I would ask the parents of this PG student to reconsider their actions. The charges have gone to a vindictive state. They are seeking to hurt BE for all of its action toward PG, through this one incident. Let them give a lesson to their children in turning the other cheek, in forgivness and in compassion. Ruining lives does not come from a simple broken nose. Let these boys do community service, let them be expelled, but don't ruin their futures from an elitist attitude.
Above all, I would encourage people to recognize that these boys made a stupid mistake, that is now hurting their families, their education, their school and their friends. But, let us forgive them, I believe that they have learned their lesson.
Please pray for their families.

I do believe the sources used for this article mislead everything.
First off,
The porter-Gaud boy was doing "doughnuts" in the Bishop England School parking lot and on the lawn. He also hit a curb and a sign. He began taunting the B.E. boys, who in return made a big mistake.
Secondly,
According to a statement I received from a close relationed person to the victim, the P-G student was never taken out of his car. If someone would please rewrite the article and feature it in the next newspaper-- it would be greatly appreciated. I will be glad to take the time to do it myself. thanks.
BEHSGIRL and STUDENT-- i agree with some of what y'all had to say. Well put!
As far as everything that happened, the boys honestly, should have just punched the kid once and that was it. and only ONE BEHS student should have-- if any-- punched him then walked away. No one, especially a 15 year old boy who is just about 115 pounds, deserves to be beaten up so profusely and basically left to rot. Although i agree, he was WRONG in what he did, the boys had no reason to hurt him like they did. A broken nose, a screwed up eyesocket, and a broken jaw- that is to the extreme. Way too extreme.
As far as his being fifteen years old and driving, I recieved my waiver at fifteen years old because I had a job. Maybe he had a job, or a sport that he was playing, or some other reason for a waiver. No one really knows what the deal is with the driving underage or anything- so i suggest it gets dropped considering theres nothing anyone can really say about it.
I agree that Gilly cna be an ass but he can also be a nice guy when you need him to. As far as Hazel, he is absolutely the nicest and funniest guy I have met. I love Hazel to death.
Held has a wonderful personality and it absolutely a crack-up.
These boys, no matter how wonderful they are, have made a big terrible mistake that they are and should continue to pay for.
I am not on either side because both were in the wrong.
The P-G student shouldn't have started doing anything and the BEHS students shouldnt have let it bother them.. at least to this extent.

....As far as Principal Held-- he should not resign or be fired. THat is a ridiculous suggestion. Although everyone is talking about it, it is a hideous idea considering he has been a wonderful principal to that school and to those kids. My parents raised me and my brothers right- with strict discipline- but all of us have screwed up once in a while.
Just because a child, (or teenager//adult in this case) makes a mistake, it does not mean that the parents did not do their job. THat is a total misconception. I garuntee that all of us ahve been disciplined in some way by our guardians and we have still made grave mistakes and regretted them. THat does not shine on the parents when you are 17 years old and old enough to know right from wrong.
What the boys did was wrong and in the moment. They were pissed off so they decided to vent their anger out and hurt someone that pissed them off. They were lving in the moment and i bet feeling like heros becuase of it until they realized that they were screwed. They messed up big time.
But, what's done is done. For the remainder of the year, the games should be cancelled between the two schools because of the possibility of something like this happening, but worse.

I do NOT think the games should be cancelled between PG and BEHS. It was Alex, Gilly, and Hazel's crime. Not the rest of the school. As said, "the crimes of a few need not affect the whole". I agree. Not only are sports events but tournaments and events held at the school are cancelled as well. This is very unfair.
Regarding Mr. Held... He's a good principal. But he is concentrated too much on sports. He barely gives any regard at all to academic extracurriculares. And hes biast, of course. Unjust to some of the students, the way he's been favoring his son.

Unfortunately, it is unrealistic to assume that the media would accurately report the story the way it actually happened. The ramifications resulting from sloppy journalism can make or break individuals. Because of this article the coarse of the 3 BE boys has now taken a new direction. This article has now made it impossible for these boys to be reinstated in school. The facts do not warrant the consequences these boys are facing. The facts are as follows. After a heated basketball game a PG boy is seen tearing up the grounds on BE campus. During this time, he takes out a speed sign with his vehicle. Words and gestures are exchanged by all. This "victim" receives one punch by one boy. It was not a beating as many comments have indicated. Also, there are other PG boys standing around or running away. The injuries were "so bad" that this "victim" attends his track team banquet the next night and is in school the following Monday. His accountability is not even addressed (he is driving at night unlawfully, destroying property, and damaging a street sign). Isn't this criminal? His injuries have been exagerrated just as the 3 boys involvement. This situation has gotten so out of hand that accountability should be falling in the laps of those with in power.

4) Seriously parents...you REALLY think you can control your children. Maybe when they're 7...but 17? I dont think so. If you really think your children don't do anything that could be considdered "stupid" then you should be the one wearing the dunce cap. I think it is absolutely preposterous to say parents have no control over their children. I have a wonderful relationship with my parents where there is mutual respect. They do not have to "control" me because they instilled me with the values and ability to make the right choices even in difficult situations.

Also, as far as this not concerning anyone outside the BEHS or Porter Gaud community I think you are mistaken. BE and Porter are fixtures of the community, and it is normal that people have questions and opinions. These people may have connections that go beyond that of simply being a student or parent.

Instigated or not, the Bishop England boys took the incident to an extreme level. Nothing should prompt a high school boy to beat another boy in the face enough to send him to the hospital. Neither does it matter which boy threw a punch and which boy held him down; it is the same crime.

They made a mistake... a huge mistake. One that they should be punished for, because if not now... they will think they are invincible. ANYONE no matter race, background or social status should be punished for the crime they committed. Nothing less.

January 9, 2008 at 9:57 p.m. ( | suggest removal )

VV09 (anonymous) says...

First off, some people claiming to be Bishop England students are completely making the school look bad by rambling on.
I'm not addressing the well-spoken "BEHS Senior", but the girl who griped about the gum chewing, and the other user who rambled on with the excessive use of "he".

I'm a student at BE, and I do not personally know these boys.
All of you who call for Mr. Held's head must not have any idea of how BE is ran, or any idea of being a teenager for that matter.
These boys' actions, while serious and disappointing, do not make the PARENTS liable for their actions. Great parents can have a child who misbehaves.
Kids can get caught up in the moment, suspend their judgement, and participate in activites they would not normally do. I do not think these boys made an intricate plan of how they were going to smite the PG kid.

Secondly,
BE has had problems with PG in the past.
This kid did NOT simply hit the curb and get out to survey the damage. He was being HIGHLY disrespectful of BE and BE's property, all while driving ILLEGALLY past curfew.
I'd like to see the "victim" charged with breaking curfew, wreckless driving (he was doing donuts), and vandalization of private property. The kid's dad is a lawyer, he should be able to fend it off.

Thirdly,
the ONLY reason this is "BREAKING NEWS" is because it happened between Charleston's two private schools. These schools are hardly know for major criminal activity, so of course when something of this nature occurs, it is quite alarming. BUT, this article itself is highly understated. An act of pure editorial spin.

There is no preferential treatment.
These boys did voluntarily surrender at the police station, they did acknowledge their actions and they will be punished. Unlike some of these public school thugs, they don't have a drag-out fight til the end. The BE boys know what they did was wrong, and they're taking responsibility for their actions.

Mr. Held is in no way responsible for what happened. He is a good principal and has done many great things for BE. He should not be fired or even resign- imagine that YOUR son or daughter had behaved like this. His or her life has been changed forever. Mr. Held has an especially difficult situation because he is both a parent and a school official.

What these boys need is some good PR. We should get Chris Crocker (famous for his video supporting Mrs. Spears) to do a YouTube stunt for our boys.

Leave BE alone.
Stop your talk of "preferential treatment" and racial comments.
This is a matter between the two schools.

I try very hard to be responsible for my own actions, and all that I was saying was that there are parents and children who have good relationships, its not simply a matter of "control." I also highly doubt that any of my actions even those I may regret would do so much as "shock" my family. It is the actions of very few that are so extreme, its remiss to think that the majority of highschoolers are out acting with such "shocking" behavior.

As a graduate of the class of 2007, this is normal stuff that happens at BE PG games. Last year after the game my friend punched someone in the face and immediately got restrained by the cops and then about 5 minutes later start a fight on our way out to the car. Probably all 3 of them were drunk as well with the porter gaud kid, cause everyone wanted to get drunk before the games. I've known all three personally, gilly got what he deserved for being the actual person who through punches cause he thought hes a hardass his entire life, alex held has been a trouble kid for a long time, getting caught at parties, smoking pot, all while mr. held neglects his behavior. the only one who i maybe have a positive view about is michael hazel just cause he's always been known as a nice guy compared to the other two. the porter gaud kid is a moron for doing property damage at BE and should be charged with damage to private property if they are to pursue charges on all three of them. i personally have heard about 5 different stories about this and everyone of them always had gilly and alex held invovled, not michael hazel. mr. held should not resign, he is a very smart and nice principal, i was selected to be in the only class he teaches at school and he taught all of us a great amount of knowledge. the rivalry between the two schools is what fueled this incident to happen and the porter gaud kid brought this onto himself by doing damage to BE property.

If the PG kid vandalized the BE campus, he should be charged accordingly and therefore it would be appropriate to say that he "brought this onto himself." Getting beaten was not appropriate punishment. Those who witnessed any criminal behavior should have called the police and reported it with a vehicle description, license plate number, etc.

If only these kids knew.....high school is so irrelevant. I have known kids at both schools for years, and most of them have close friends at the "rival" school. I've been to many BE/PG games and have observed kids who scream horrible things at each other meet up and go out together after the games. It's a shame that this happened, and I hope that students at both schools will learn from it and think before doing something impulsive, irresponsible and/or harmful to others.

alright I'm a senior at BE too, and I was at the game, but I left before all of this happened. as soon as the game ended, I did the usual celebration inside, and then got in my car and went home. I knew that fights usually happened but I'm never in them..so I didn't even hear about this until the next Monday. I don't know everything about it so I'm not gonna say I do.
I don't know Alex well, but he seemed really smart so I don't know what he was thinking here. and Hazel? sorry but I can't see that guy beating up some kid. I don't mean physcially unable, I mean because he's such a nice guy to everyone. I feel bad for them that they have to leave school this close to the end because they made stupid descions and I hope the PG kid's alright.

It sucks they canceled the games though...the two this year have both been great...decided by 3 points or less, both in double OT. I was really looking forward to the game Saturday, not because I wanted to fight or something stupid, but because it was a tiebreaker in an awesome rivalry. plus it was the last BE/PG game I'd go to before I graduated. but I guess I can see why they canceled it...it could get nasty if a few idiots start something.

but they canceled golf too...so...??

and Mr. Held's a great guy and principal. I just had him for goverment and he's an awesome teacher. It's not his fault his kid did this...he was probably still at school, closing it up. and this story is bad...I don't think this is top-of-the-page news on charleston.net. I mean, fights happen all the time. I guess because it's between two "rich" schools. which isn't true either.

I hope this doesn't sound like I'm defending what they did, cause I'm not. I'm just saying what I think about it.

well, that's all.

I graduated from the class of 2007 and I think that posts stating and agreeing that Mr. Held should resign are ridiculous. He cares so much about the students in that school and that is obvious after being one of those students for four years. Just because his son got into a fight does not mean he is a bad principal and it definitely doesn't mean he should lose his job. I've witnessed the effect of the combination of school rivalry and substance use and it's not uncommon for a fight to happen. However, no matter what the circumstance, three 17 year olds against a 15 year old is hardly a fair fight. If these boys want to fight like men then they should take their charges like men. Also, it isn't quite fair to cancel the rest of the year's meetings between the two schools because of the stupidity shown by those boys. It ruins it for those who do behave well and for those participating in the sports. But sometimes the only way to discourage this kind of behavior is to take drastic measures. It's unfortunate that society has come to the point where friendly competition has turned into full-on hate in the hearts of some.

And for the record, knowing a bit about the BE boys I am shocked by Michael Hazel's involvement, but not by Gilly Artigues'. Michael was a very kind person, but Gilly always seemed to be in trouble or to be causing it. I just hope that everything works out and that justice is served appropriately.

I am not even going to talk about the current situation dealing with these three individuals. However, I am going to tell u guys about something that occured in the fall-winter of 1997. A young man named David Lavelle and two other BE students were attending a party on Johns Island. After attending the party for a short period Mr. Lavelle was approached and beaten by over 10 Porter-Gaud students. One of these individuals beat him with an empty beer keg. David was helped by Heyward Duffy the son of a local judge and fellow classmate!! Heyward was hit several times and eventually got him (David) in the car and left, taking him to the hospital. You could not even recognize David!!!, but Coach Lavelle did not sue. Why not? He could be living in the Calhoun Mansion if he wanted, ha!! Between Judge Duffy and Mr. Theos they definitely had power and influence. He did not sue because Coach, Mr. Theos and David are not cowards and decided just to let it BE. What would Mr. Nick have done, today? The same damn thing as Mr. Held because he hand picked a man of character and conviction. Its because of people like this kids dad that make my insurance so high. Please have a good day and sorry for all the grammitical errors, I was in the A2 posse! Bishops1998- I graduated from PG in 1998. I am doubting that story. I know it did not happen from people in my class. I knew everyone in the class above me (there were only 70 of us in each class) and there were not 10 guys who would do that. Most of them were too busy getting high. I think you are greatly exaggerating.

Also, the "student in effigy" from '97 was originally hung at BE. the BE students who vandalized PG took it down and took it over to PG. the statue they broke at PG was of a girl that had died of cancer the year before. The best thing we did was put eggs in the air conditioning unit at BE, I heard that smelled for weeks.

The reason we vandalized BE? They had been doing it to us for years and nothing ever happened. We do it back and the sh!t hits the fan. All the PG guys confessed, neither of the 2 BE guys did. I am good friends with one of them now.

There were well more than three men involved in the entire evolution. There were upwards of 7-10 young men present. Now, I'm not certain as to who threw the punch but I promise you that it wasn't a "gang" related endeavor.

I recall in 1988 or 89 when Freddy St. Laurent and Tommy Hartnett Jr. had planned to scuffle after school (both we BE students). There were even fliers passing around. Apparently, Mr. Theos and Coach Lavelle got word and were present at the agreed upon spot so true to form, the guys and their respective entourages decided to meet at an alternate location. This time, there was no stopping them. There was only one punch thrown!!! One punch and Tommy wore sunglasses to school and while "in" class. His eye looked like he had gotten hit with a 95 mph fastball. I don't recall Tommy Hartnett Sr. filing a law suit nor do I recall either young man being expelled however there may have been some suspension involved.

I'm curious to know if some of the young lad from PG's surgical procedures became elective after fixing the immediate issue. I'm not say him being punched was right, just curious about the facts.

Point is folks, wait til the "FACTS" come out. If we all sat in a circle and I started the password game with the phrase "green and white, such delight", by the time it got back to me, it would now be "red and grey, such a sad sad day".

I was at the party on Johns Island, I do remember it being at least 4-5 guys and you are right they got him pretty good. Heyward did pull him out and if I remember correctly his car paid a real price with the beer keg they were using as a weapon. I don't remember what it was about but I doubt it was anything related to vandalism. I think it may have been 1996 (long before the vandalism occured). I remember it being right before Thanksgiving and it being cold as hell.

I am sorry for the BE kids and for the PG kid as well, I do not think anyone wanted to put someone in the hospital; however, the charges are very serious and I hope that a better understanding of the events come out in the legal process, rather than just this speculation.

The vandalism occurred many times before 1997- BE had been doing it for years. That is why, as seniors, we were going to retaliate. Childish, yes, but we were kids.

The statue for Michael Rawls (I was leaving names out, but I guess Bishops already put it out there) was put up around 1993. I think he was supposed to graduate in '93 or '94.

If the PG kid tore up the lawn at BE, he deserves to be charged with vandalism. If the BE kids beat him up, they deserve to be charged with assault and battery. OK?

By the way, a BE parent told me today that the PG kid was badly beaten, according to his kids at BE who were not involved. He did say that the PG kid messed up the lawn but added that he should have been arrested, and that SHOULD have been the end of it. As for those who think he deserved to get beaten, I hope you don't advocate that in front of your kids.

I Am a Senior at BE. I know every single one of these boys personally. I have grown up with two of them and one of them is my best friend. By now you probably know who I am. Now that I've introduced myself:
This is in reply mainly to anonymousstudent:
First, I don't think that you are going to offend anybody with your comments. You're making yourself look ignorant. You go to BE, you know the story, and you know that people are being falsely accused. You know who is being falsely accused and you know who is in the wrong. Everyone at BE knows exactly the two people I'm talking about; and I'm going to assume, you are included in this population.
The reason the kids weren't suspended until two weeks later is that the school was waiting for the police and diocese to take action. I don't know if you recall the kids being called out of class to go speak with the police or anything. Maybe you chose not to recall these facts to make your point seem stronger. And when you were walking through the halls with these students did you really feel threatened or something of that sort? If you know any of these guys you wouldn't feel that way at all. Next, in response to your teacher's comment: I'm going to assume that since it was the following Monday that a certain someone, who seems to have been forgotten by the administration, police, and the victim, was still assumed to be a part of this. I'm going to assume that this was before Michael became a suspect of sorts. Because every teacher I talk to says something along the lines of, "I can't believe that Michael is involved. He wouldn't hurt a fly. He's too sweet to do that." And if you listen closely in the halls, you would hear every student saying the same exact thing. Everyone knows that Michael is being falsely accused. Everyone knows that someone who doesn't deserve to be back at BE is back. Everyone who goes to BE knows exactly who I'm talking about; this includes you, anonymousstudent. Sure I have a bias considering I've grown up with Michael, but honestly, how can you attend BE and even begin to think that he had anything to do with this? Have you been living under a rock in the BE community. Come on.
Now please go on to read the next comment, because I, like yourself, just had too much to say on the subject

January 10, 2008 at 8:25 p.m. ( | suggest removal )

this_is_nonsense (anonymous) says...

Yes the boys deserve punishment. But they deserve punishment that is in accordance to the actions they took. If they hit the victim, an action that was completely wrong, they deserve what they're getting. Two of the true bystanders, and again, if you attend BE you know who they were, in accordance with the handbook got exactly what they deserved, suspension. Those two returned to school today, welcome back! I, and a majority of the student body, wish that we could welcome Michael back in place of another young man who will remain unnamed.
I hope this opened your eyes anonymousstudent, but I have a feeling your ignorance will override the facts, much like it has with dozens of people who have given input on this forum.
God bless each one of these boys and their families. We are here and praying for you.

I believe when you say that your friend Michael Hazel is good person. Your strong conviction shows me that you truly care about him. As you said "Because every teacher I talk to says something along the lines of, "I can't believe that Michael is involved. He wouldn't hurt a fly. He's too sweet to do that." Maybe this is true, but what if...

I'm simply wondering if he is innocent of the crime, merely a witness to it, how could he idly sit by and watch his friends brutely attack another human being? I hope that his conscience did kick in and he did realize that what he was seeing was wrong, but maybe he felt he couldn't break up the fight who knows?

And this forum for debate is great by the way. A perfect example of people expressing their views without knocking one anothers lights out. All people should first turn to diplomatic debates to solve to their quarrels instead of fighting everytime or else the Democrats and Republicans would be throwin' it down in Congress every other day.--ie.Sumner-Brooks affair circa 1850s
Well even if you don't get that reference you know that as I have said before the world would be in chaos without justice and with only violence.

1) I am not catholic, but attended BSS & BEHS (RECENTLY): Most ppl who attend catholic schools are catholic. In the catholic belief at 12 years old you decide your faith, a big decision. If y'all feel that a decision can be made by a youth at that age, why can't a 17 year old be held accountable of their actions. Don't fault the parents (Held).
2) I went to school with some of your kids. Believe it, you don't know what the hell they are doing. So, don't overestimate your parenting skills. Peer pressure has big influence.
3) Yeah, all parties involved weren't black. But he didn't feel that way. When you go to a school like BEHS, you assimilate sadly. He was half anyway. Contrary to older people's belief, when you talk and dress a certain way, people sometimes forget skin color.
4)Yeah there's several fights that occur in downtown that aren't accounted for. But Y'all are just surprised that disciplinary action was taken towards these student. So was I. It's not everyday that BE boys from Sullivan and Daniel Island are discipline publicly.

I'm just wondering why we have heard nothing about the PG kid being arrested for damaging property? If he did all that they are saying he did, why didn't the police take pictures, where is the police report on the damage, etc. Maybe that is coming? Police reports are public record and you would think that someone would have gotten it after a month to show what supposedly started all this?

My gut tells me that this is not about what happened that night but a CULTURE that has gone on for a long time unchecked. Why did it take so long when other students who have done less were gone in a day? To me, it seems that this might be a "sympton" of a "cancer" that has gone untreated (i.e., your last name, whether you are an athlete, how much your parents make, etc.) Fights like this just do not make the paper and the local media like this one has. These schools have been vandalizing each other for years. As a part of the BE community right now as a parent and former student, there is something deeper going on here...and I hold David Held responsible -- as much as I like him personally. He, the Diocese, leadership, etc. need to look beyond this teenage fight. There's more to this one and that is all I will say...
