S.C. Obama supporters expect candidate to find favor in state

The Post and Courier
Saturday, January 5, 2008

Sen. Barack Obama's dramatic win in Thursday's Iowa Democratic caucus will help him win South Carolina later this month by convincing Democrats of his electability and attracting swing voters to the primary, local observers say.

"I would hope that his victory last night really gives all types of voters more confidence in considering him and selecting him," said David Agnew, a Charleston businessman and co-chair of Obama's South Carolina campaign. "I don't think that's limited to one category of voters."

Meanwhile, local backers of Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., and former Sen. John Edwards caution not to count their candidates out.

What happened in Iowa won't resonate here, said Charleston County Councilwoman Colleen Condon, a prominent Clinton supporter.

"I think what we need to look at is a person who can win this race, and the Election Day isn't until November 2008. Hillary Clinton is the candidate with the best experience and strength to make it all the way to November," Condon said. "It isn't about winning one race."

Charleston City Councilman Wendell Gilliard supports Edwards, but he also was pleased to see Obama, whom he would want as Edwards' vice president, do well.

"As an African-American, I'm very proud now to see the acceptance of an African-American coming out of this historical moment in Iowa," Gilliard said. "I'm just proud to see that."

Gilliard said he's backing Edwards because of his experience, and voters shouldn't think much about poll numbers or how much cash a candidate has raised — two areas where Edwards has lagged behind Clinton and Obama.

"We have two Americas. One for the rich and one for the poor," Gilliard said. "The big corporations, they do have a stranglehold on this country."

Andy Brack, who ran as a Democrat for South Carolina's 1st Congressional District, said Clinton was the biggest loser other than Sens. Joe Biden of Delaware and Chris Dodd of Connecticut, who withdrew shortly after their disappointing tallies.

"For a long time, Hillary Clinton appeared to be the only national candidate," Brack said. "What happened Thursday night was Barack Obama emerged as a national candidate. He's got the momentum."

Brack said he would have expected Obama to do well in South Carolina, even if he arrived here with minimal momentum.

"They've invested more in the organizational and manpower stuff than just about anybody else has, and I think it's going to pay off," Brack said. "This (Iowa win) just provides him with a lot of credibility with voters in South Carolina."

Obama won big in Iowa partly by attracting young and independent voters, and Agnew said the Illinois senator can pull off the same thing in the Palmetto State. "For me, personally, that is what's so exciting about Barack Obama — the language he uses and his personality and the way he articulates his positions, all those things combine to make him attractive to Republicans and independents and Democrats."

South Carolina Democratic Party Chair Carol Fowler said she was pleased to see the Democratic caucus turnout topping 230,000, far surpassing the about 120,000 who caucused for the GOP.

"Last night's caucuses in Iowa showed how divided and uninspired the Republican Party is," she said. "It's clear from last night's caucuses in Iowa there is more energy and more enthusiasm to elect a Democratic president than ever before. I think the enthusiasm from Iowa will spread to South Carolina primary voters and result in an unprecedented voter turnout on Jan. 26."

I think all of those non-African American people who are so proud of Obama should take a look at his church website and see what he is truly about. www.tucc.org/about.htm Racist is the only word for him and his church. Can't you just see the Obama white house, Al Sharpton, Oprah and of Jesse Jackson will be there!

We should remain open minded as alot of internet info is taken out of context. Someone will question Obama regarding this and I look forward to hearing or reading his answer. It is not just a white world anymore....Get over it.....
Remember...You can vote for anyone you want to......Just vote.

madamvoter, It is so sad that as AMERICANS, black and white, we are this desperate to prove that it isn't a white world anymore. I pray there is surely a better choice for a black candidate than Obama-the-Racist. I'm also sure that Sharpton,Oprah and Jackson have already been to the Whitehouse, just not as advisors or permanent fixtures, as will( in my opinion) be the case if Obama wins. Funny how you, madamvoter, chose to only address the Oprah part of my comment and not the Obama church of choice part. Have you researched this church? Try Google: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=.... I will NOT vote for any Racist candidate....BLACK or WHITE!

All southern white racist will be coming out of the wood work to say or do anything to make sure an intelligent black man won't win the race to the white house. God forbid we elect an educated man who hasn't sold out the middle class in america or who doesn't have a majority of corp's in his pocket. America needs a BIG WAKE UP CALL, we cannot continue down the same path the last 19 years, CHANGE & a new sense of HOPE. 11 ugly years of Bush Family & 8 years of Clinton's. DC needs to start taking care of those who goes to work everyday, take care of their families, and pay taxes. It ain't a white or black thing, it's the right thing. Quite believing those GOP that keeping telling you that you will get a share of $$ if you vote for them. It won't happen, never has and never will.

You can save that crap JohnQ...you have made it quite evident you run your life and would run the country by the communist manifesto, not the U.S. Constitution. You are a socialist with a deep hatred of the capitalist system and a desire to force everyone to live in equal squalor.

Per Obamas church, he's been questioned numerous times on this pastors views, and the best Obama has come up with is that he doesn't agree with everything his pastor says.

majorjohnson (anonymous) says...

Read your post JohnQ...socialist health care, corporate pockets, fair system of government...you constantly harp about evil corporations, evil school choice, evil medical care, evil rich people. You're sole fix for anything is for government to take from anyone who has earned and give to those who haven't.

You cry for days about evil oil companies making huge evil profits, but you fail to note that for every penny of profit, most of which goes to increase peoples investment savings for retirement, the government gets almost 2 pennies in taxes. Oil company makes $800 billion in profit, bad, government taking $1.5 trillion in taxes from those companies that would have gone into peoples investment saving for retirement, good. People working hard to pay for their own health care, bad, people working hard and paying for someone else's health care, good.

Why you would even try to act like you are offended at my pointing out that you are a socialist is beyond me. The democrat party was taken over by the socialist party long ago...if you prefer to hide behind the rubric of democrat knock yourself out.

And go to New York or London and tell folks how imaginary those terrorists are.

I haven't been happy with the way the country has run for a long time, but it's because of government intrusion and socialist policies destroying the country. We can't afford health care because of government. Educations costs have risen and education levels fallen because of government. Money the government takes from business in taxes could have hired employees, expanded business, been given in raises. The government is mandating ethanol, raising the cost of food...soon we probably will need the government to try to correct that with another huge government program. I struggle to save enough not to have to live on SSI because I have to fork over 14+% of my income to the government to pay for someone else's retirement.

I don't like President Bush for the most part, he botched the war and allowed the congress to increase social programs, earmarks and the budget deficit. He's far better than Kerry or Gore would have been though...the lesser of two evils is all I can say for the current president.

tripsa wrote: "Prez. Bush has done a great job". This has to be an attempt at humor; possibly a joke I'm not in on. Please tell me and other veterans about the great job Bush has done.

Our brave military heroes have to fight the Bush Government to get quality health care. How dare you patronize me and my fellow veterans! Some of our soldiers are on they're 3rd and 4th tours of duty and go to their duty honorably even though some of their families are falling apart because of the strain. Where is the proper medical care promised by the Government in the enlistment contracts.
Veterans are hurting and hurting badly!

Some of the soldiers in Iraq had to take out the welding torches and put steel under the humvees to protect themselves because they couldn't get humvees that would protect them even after complaining constantly about the lives being lost, which were preventable.

I guess you will say, oh, this is not President Bush's fault - HE IS THE COMMANDER IN CHIEF, that means he is the NUMERO UNO TOP DOG IN CHARGE OF THE MILITARY.

Even more sickening is the fact that President Bush is quick to say a job well done to a dead soldier's family, and providing no answers to the CIVIL WAR/QUAGMIRE in Iraq. Oh better yet, WHERE IS OSAMA - THE REASON FOR 9/11. Most of my military buddies and I feel this way - why didn't we go full force into Afghanistan and root Osama and his cowardly Al Queda out from the start?

Presdient Bush has done a disservice to our military and you can take your "Great Job" and deposit it where the sun doesn't shine. I just want to defend the military, I won't get into the SCANDAL AFTER SCANDAL and all of his policies that are benefitting the rich. The middle class and hard working taxpayers of this great country are getting the short end of the stick.

We need a change before our country goes totally down the tubes. We don't need anymore of Bush's uncaring policies that continue to destroy this country.

A person who has not been there, has no understanding of the sacrifices involved in being there. What did Bush do? He joined the guard, tucked his tails between his legs like a lot of other privileged kids in this country and hid.

Most definitely, Kerry or Gore would have done a much better job than Bush. It's amazing to me, that people can't see what Bush has done to this country!

Who is Barack Obama?

Something that should be considered when you make your choice.

If you do not ever forward anything else, please forward this to all
your contacts...it is very scary to think of what could lie ahead for us
here in our own United States...better heed this and pray about it and share it.

We checked this out on 'snopes.com'. It is factual. Check for yourself.

Who is Barack Obama?

Probable U. S. presidential candidate, Barack Hussein Obama was born
in Honolulu, Hawaii, to Barack Hussein Obama, Sr., a black MUSLIM
from Nyangoma-Kogel, Kenya and Ann Dunham, a white Athiest from
Wichita, Kansas.

Obama's parents met at the University of Hawaii. When Obama was two
years old, his parents divorced. His father returned to Kenya. His
mother then married Lolo Soetoro, a RADICAL Muslim from Indonesia.
When Obama was 6 years old, the family relocated to Indonesia. Obama
attended a MUSLIM school in Jakarta. He also spent two years in a
Catholic school.

Obama takes great care to conceal the fact that he is a Muslim. He is
quick to point out that, 'He was once a Muslim, but that he also
attended Catholic school.'

Obama's political handlers are attempting to make it appear that
that he is not a radical.

Obama's introduction to Islam came via his father, and that this
influence was temporary at best. In reality, the senior Obama returned
to Kenya soon after the divorce, and never again had any direct
influence over his son's education.

Lolo Soetoro, the second husband of Obama's mother, Ann Dunham,
introduced his stepson to Islam. Obama was enrolled in a Wahabi school
in Jakarta.

Wahabism is the RADICAL ISLAMIC teaching that is followed by the Muslim
terrorists who are now waging Jihad against the western world. Since
it is politically expedient to be a CHRISTIAN when seeking major
public office in the United States, Barack Hussein Obama has joined
the United Church of Christ in an attempt to downplay his Muslim
background. ALSO, keep in mind that when he was sworn into office he
DID NOT use the Holy Bible, but instead the Koran.

Barack Hussein Obama will NOT recite the Pledge of Allegience nor
will he show any reverence for our flag. While others place their hands
over their hearts, Obama turns his back to the flag and slouches.

Let us all remain alert concerning Obama's expected presidential
candidacy.

The Muslims have said they plan on destroying the US from the inside
out, what better way to start than at the highest level - through the
President of the United States, one of their own!!!!

Please forward to everyone you know. Would you want this man leading
our country?...... NOT US!!!

asf123 - You really need to get real. Do you know and this is fact that the Bush family members are great friends with the Saudi Royal family? Where were most of the 9/11 terrorists from? Guess? Saudi Arabia. Google this and you will find this fact on reputable websites, not gossip blogs.

As for Obama, as one poster correctly stated, the man is half-white. I sense you only have a problem with him because he is considered black? (You know, the old southern slave rule - one ounce or 1% of black blood, no matter if the other 99 ounces or 99% is white - you're still black. So therefore, in your book, Obama is inferior to YOU and he definitely should not be elected President of YOUR country.

Preachlove, I commend you for your service to our country. I too, am a veteran. I have no complaint for the healthcare I receive as a retired veteran. And as you, I have many retired veteran friends who have dealt with serious health issues and received the best of care from military healthcare providers. My son, by the way, an active duty soldier in Afghanistan, has no complaints for the services he receives either. With every health related "issue" you find in military healthcare services, you will find two or more of the same in the civilian sector. No system is perfect and their will always be a need to improve.

The call of duty has always put unbearable strain on the families effected by it. always has, and always will. The volunteer force knows what it is getting into when they sign the papers. If they don't--well, let's just say they were "expecting" something different than reality.

Force Protection, Inc., right here in Ladson-- is doing a fine job retrofitting our mechanized battlefield equipment with armor plating to reduce the IED effects on our troops. Sure, field commanders did not have the foresight to see the impact of IED's when the war started. But, no one foresaw the ineptitude of the Sherman battletank against the Panzer or Tiger tanks in WWII, either. As a veteran yourself, I am sure you understand the importance of lessons-learned analysis.

As for Osama Bin Laden--I am sure Bush will leave office without that feather in his cap. And, he rarely gets credit for all the other terrorists that are now pushing daisies from six feet under. If he does get Bin Laden before January 09, I trust those who call him a failure will simply move on to something else to complain about.

As for Obama, all one needs to do is read the issues section of his website. Most of his positions mirror the leftwing radical positions of organizations such as "Acorn." He's a smooth talking politician who plays off ignorance of the masses. Myrmidons with no other interests except--what's in it for me? A poor choice for leader of the free-world.
