Woman hit, killed on Interstate 26

A woman was struck and killed Friday morning as she stood outside her car, which had broken down in an eastbound lane of Interstate 26 between Ridgeville and Harleyville, the S.C. Highway Patrol said.

Dorchester County Coroner Chris Nisbet identified the woman as Sylvia Kassandra Floyd, 26, of Olanta.

The accident occurred at 2:33 a.m., Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Bob Beres said. Floyd was trying to flag traffic to let motorists know her 2001 Honda had broken down, Beres said.

Nisbet said the Honda was in the slow lane of travel. Floyd was hit by a 1997 Ford Explorer driven by Sandra Childs of Alexandria, Va., Beres said. The accident is still under investigation.

The traffic backup from the accident resulted in a second crash that involved three cars and two tractor-trailers, Beres said.

Two men arrested in James Is. shooting

JAMES ISLAND — Two men wanted in a shooting that wounded a man near his Greenhill Road home earlier this week have been taken into custody, the Charleston County Sheriff's Office said.

Antwain Jeriel Champaigne, 21, of Champaigne Lane surrendered to deputies Friday, sheriff's Maj. John Clark said. Champaigne was being held at the Charleston County Detention Center that night on $10,000 bail, according to the jail.

Vladimir Gene Merilice, 22, of Fort Johnson Road turned himself in Wednesday, Clark said. Merilice left jail Thursday on $10,000 bail, according to the jail.

Both men were charged with second-degree lynching. Deputies said John D. Prioleau, 26, suffered a wounded leg in the shooting.

Handicapped man burned in home fire

An older handicapped man received moderate burns to his head after fire broke out in a home Friday morning on Flint Street on James Island, Battalion Chief Thomas Glick said.

James Island Public Service District fire units arrived about 9:30 a.m. and found heavy smoke at a single story home at 531 Flint St.

The fire was put under control in less than 10 minutes. The injured man, whose name wasn't immediately available, was taken to a local hospital but later transported to the regional burn unit in Augusta, Glick said he was told.

The house was ruled a total loss, Glick said, and heavy smoke with flames coming from the kitchen and dining room area were reported.

Robbery results in minor injuries

MONCKS CORNER — A Lou Rose Lane resident suffered a minor scrape to his knee during a burglary at his home Thursday night but couldn't say how the injury happened, according to a Berkeley County sheriff's report.

Clyde Lee Wilson, 41, told a deputy that he was in bed when he heard a noise shortly after 10 p.m. and found two strangers in his house. He said the front door had been kicked in.

Wilson said the two men rushed toward him, held a handgun that might have been a BB gun to his head and asked "where the clip and gun were" before they ran from the house. A juvenile in the house told deputies the men were looking for a woman named Rico.

Greenville student shoots self in leg

COLUMBIA — A Greenville college student was shot in the leg Friday in his dorm room and told police it was a self-inflicted accident, a campus official said.

The wound was not life- threatening, said Brad Majors, marketing director for Greenville Technical College. Majors said campus police and city police were investigating.

"Our priority was to get him to the hospital and get him taken care of," Majors said.

A student housing official was responding to a noise complaint near the student's dorm room when the shot was fired. Majors said he didn't know if the student's room was the one that led to the complaint.
