Woman charged in inmate's escape
A Charleston County jail inmate who escaped Friday was captured the next day, the Sheriff's Office reported Monday.
Maurice Lavarr Fludd, 35, of 150 N. Rahway Road in Goose Creek was serving time at the minimum-security work camp at the Charleston County Detention Center for failure to pay child support.
Officers noted he was missing about 8 p.m. Friday after a visit from Susan R. Levinson of Summerville, 26, according to Chief Deputy Mitch Lucas. After Levinson left, Fludd apparently walked out the visitors' exit door. Officers found the door unlocked, contrary to protocol, and are investigating why, Lucas said.
The next evening, officers got a tip that Fludd had been spotted on Salley Avenue, which is near the Sangaree area of Berkeley County. Charleston County and Berkeley County deputies arrested Levinson in an empty mobile home and charged her as an accessory after the fact in Fludd's escape. Fludd was nabbed a short time later on nearby Royle Road and charged with escape.
Fludd was jailed Nov. 28 and was eligible for release Feb. 23.
